flipped_bit reacted to Stahlmann in Understanding Monitor Response Time at Different Refresh Rates
Basically any time your fps dip below 144Hz and you have VRR enabled, your refresh rate will also change. Not just to 60Hz, but every step in between. For example if your game runs at 92 fps your refresh rate will also be 92Hz.

Here the 144Hz response time will apply, as the monitor always runs at 144Hz without VRR.

Here the CURRENT refresh rate applies, which will be the same as your CURRENT fps. For example with VRR enabled and running at 60fps will result in the 60Hz response times.

The 144Hz response times will apply, but running your refresh rate and fps out of sync will result in the usual non-VRR issues. For example tearing and stuttering.

This is the same as the one above. 144Hz response times will apply, but with the same downsides of not using VRR, plus the added input lag from Vsync.

Response times at 60Hz are not as important as you'd think imo. Games that run on locked at 60Hz typically don't need the lowest possible input lag. But like i said above, these response times also apply when using VRR and your fps dip in the 60's. So if 60Hz response times matter to you specifically depends on the games you play and the hardware power you have. If you can comfortably run all your games at 100+ fps then 60Hz response times don't really matter for you. But i'd personally always go for a monitor that has 1 overdrive mode that can be used at ALL refresh rates without having big performance issues at a specific range. But this feature is typically reserved for higher-end monitors (with a few exceptions).

Well, if they want to ramp up margins, this is the best way. AMD is way cheaper than Intel, but performs just as good. Apple will charge the same for their devices, but will have to pay less for their components. Makes perfect sense.

flipped_bit got a reaction from muito_gostoso in RX 480 4GB Throttling at 60 Degrees Celsius
I have an MSI RX 480 Gaming X 4GB card.  In the past, its load temperature has been in the low to mid 60s (at ~1,250rpm on the fans).

All of a sudden it won't go above 60 degrees.  Either the GPU clock or GP utilization will fall as it approaches 60 degrees.  Undervolt/overvolt, lower/higher power limit, nothing I try will get it over 60.  This has led to a roughly 10% decrease in performance - not the end of the world, but annoying (especially since I don't know why it's happened).

I've un-installed Afterburner and nuked the system with DDU a couple times.  I haven't re-installed Windows yet, but I may have to try that next.

I'm using the latest Adrenalin 2020 package (19.12.3).  I've gone back and tried older drivers where I had no issue and the problem persists.

I have read online about some people that have experienced this kind of problem (temperature based throttling at low temps) and they fixed it by re-applying thermal paste.  This doesn't make sense to me - if the thermal paste was bad, wouldn't the GPU core temp be well over 60 degrees?

I thought perhaps my fan curve is too low, and performance does increase somewhat if I ramp the fans up at lower temps (but not to its previous levels before the problem emerged).  Is it possible something else on the card is responsible for throttling the core?  I don't think this is likely - my card has a 0 fan speed mode up to 60 degrees, so it's designed not to have any active cooling until it hits 60 degrees.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

The 9700k will have 8 threads and the best IPC + clock speeds available for the foreseeable future. It'll be a gaming beast, provided it doesn't thermal-throttle by the second splash screen.

SMT/HT doesn't provide any gaming benefit unless you're severely limited in thread count. In the days of dual-core i3 budget gaming builds, HT mattered, but it'll be a long time before you see games begin to saturate 8 threads.

flipped_bit got a reaction from Phate.exe in Windows 10 Scheduler bug causes poor RyZen performance
No one should have expected AMD to make up the huge deficit in IPC in one generation.  Nor should anyone have expected AMD to catch Intel in max clock speeds.  Given both IPC and max clocks have a direct bearing on gaming performance in some games, Ryzen is performing as expected.  If anything, it's performing better than expected.

Depending on the benchmark IPC looks to be between Haswell and Broadwell level.  Ryzen is already capable of delivering a high quality gaming experience, and if these software bugs get sorted out then it will be very close to the 6900K in all titles.

DX 12 has turned out to be a big dud, so far. Most games actually lose performance when using it, and there's also Vulkan, which does the same thing as Windows 10 and runs on everything going back to Windows XP. I read of one developer who recently scrapped their DX 12 efforts in favour of starting work on Vulkan, because DX 12 offered nothing over Vulkan, while Vulkan offered much over DX 12, being multi-platform, and open source. Also, the vast majority of gamers currently have Nvidia GPUs, which so far don't benefit from DX 12 or Vulkan.

flipped_bit reacted to intender in RX 580 & 570, rebrands, coming in April
The 480 has a lot of room for improvement if they can manage to get higher clocks out of it without pulling 250watts just from the card.  So I could see a 580 that is just a higher clocked version.  1500mhz would put it somewhere around the 1070 in terms of performance based on what I remember seeing online a while back.
