AlanAlan reacted to Hackentosher in A Damn Fine, Affordable Ultrabook: Lenovo Yoga 720 13.3
I haven’t had this laptop for long, but I think I can provide a pretty comprehensive review of what it’s actually like to live with this laptop. Yes there are plenty of reviews on laptop sites that sing the Yoga 720’s praises, and for good reason. But let’s face it. These guys that are reviewing these machines are not real consumers. They’re nerds, yes, but they’re just providing an overview of a laptop they got on loan. They didn’t have to shell out their own cash on this machine. They didn’t have to do extensive research before choosing this one over any other.
That being said, let’s get started. The other day, I was shopping around at our local Best Buy for a laptop for school. The standard items were on my shopping list.
Not too big, but not too small Good battery life, somewhere around 8 hours or more Half decent CPU for CAD and video editing SSD IPS screen Light weight My dad wasn’t exactly impressed with buying a Lenovo, a company that the credit card fraud analyst had never heard of, but I assured him that Lenovo knows what they are doing when it comes to building a productivity laptop. And oh boy do they.

Everyone knows Lenovo for the ugly business laptops with the nipple in the middle of the keyboard, but they have certainly upped the sex appeal of their brand. The Yoga 720 embraces modern and sleek design with simple lines on a nice aluminum body. The build feels nice. There isn’t much flex to the case and they clearly use some high quality materials. The hinge isn't quite a one finger design, but I can't detect any drastic wobble, so that's not bad.

And oh my god that screen. Now maybe I'm just so impressed by this guy because both of the panels I've been using on my desktop are okayish TN panels, but this IPS display is gorgeous. 1080p at 13.3 inches gives it a nice PPI, but the colors are just amazing. Only downsides of this screen is that it doesn't get that bright, and it's a touch screen. The fact that it's a touch screen isn't that big of a deal, but I think it's a gimmick. A side effect is that the screen is glossy which of course makes it one hell of a finger print magnet. However, I like glossy screens on IPS panels. I think it makes the colors look even better and allows them to pop even more. The bezels aren't bad either. The top, left, and right bezels are nice and thin, about 1/4" I think, but the bottom bezel is healthy. But I don't mind that. The fact that the rest of the bezels are so slim distracts from the thiccccc one on bottom and I really don't mind that choice. As a side effect, it raises your taskbar a little closer to what you're working on so you don't have to shift your eyes as far I think the pros out weigh the cons on the screen. I can't really complain about all that much. Yes finger prints are annoying, but it just looks so damn good that I can't really complain.
Update: I disabled the touch screen in device manager which prevents the screen from freaking out when I want to clean it. I've also gotten better at not touching the screen, but dust and other particles are still very noticeable. Also getting fingerprints on the top bezels is impossible to avoid because there's nothing else for your finger to grab on to to open the laptop. Not that big of a deal, but I still carry a microfiber cloth with me to clean the screen once a week or so.

I'd like to move on to this glorious keyboard. Lenovo's extensive experience in business machines really shines through on this guy. The keyboard travel is a little shorter than your average laptop, but just something about it feels amazing. I feel like my fingers are like precision sports shooters, darting around the keys at insane speed with high accuracy. The keystroke is a tiny bit heavier than your average Apple laptop, but the short travel distance allows you to fly across the keys. The backlighting is a nice touch, in a cool white, but I found that on my unit, the J, K, and L keys are noticeably dimmer than the rest. No biggy, I don't look at the keys when I type anyway, and if it bugs me, I can turn it off. The backlit keys have three settings, low, high, and off. There isn't much difference between low and high, but there's a nice, gradual fade between each setting when you hit FN+SPACE to toggle through the modes. It's not a requirement in a laptop for me, but it makes the machine look and feel more premium to see that ever so subtle glow. But like, I can't convey how much I love this keyboard. At my desk, I have a TKL Cherry mx blue board that I've been using for about 5 years. I instantly felt at home on the Yoga's board, getting rather close to my usual typing speed of 75wpm on my first typing test. The keyboard is honestly what sold me on this machine. It's simply a joy to type on. It's not very loud, but it just feeeeeeellllllssss so good.

    Update:
After about three months with the laptop, I have noticed that the backlight is completely unnoticeable in any environment where there is even a modicum of light. In a dark room, it's a nice glow, but the two brightness settings are more like dim and slightly dimmer. I think I'll just keep it off unless I'm in the dark and I need special characters or something. Touch typing FTW

I am writing this next part of the review after the honeymoon euphoria has worn off. As mentioned in the last update, I have been using this machine for school for about 3 months now. I must say that the battery life is disappointing. As I write this, I simply had my laptop open in chrome for an hour (with four tabs) occasionally browsing the forums or copying a quote from my hilarious econ teacher around once every 10 minutes, then it sat in my bag for an hour, now after about another 15 minutes of use in Chrome, I am down to 75%. That's with power saver on and the brightness at 70%. This is problematic. As I mentioned earlier, the IPS panel doesn't get very bright at 100%, so 70% is just dim. Also I feel that I shouldn't have to turn on the power saver mode to get barely reasonable battery performance. SMH. Yesterday, with a similar load, but with a couple hours of photo editing in Light Room, I made it down to 20% by the end of the day. This laptop uses a USB C port to charge, which is awesome, but you need the 45w power adapter to put any power into the machine in a reasonable amount of time.  An hour on a Qualcom Quickcharge 2.0 adapter I carry with me for my phone puts in around 5-7%. Also, I tried charging the laptop of a power bank at 10W and was unsusccessful. The laptop would just not accept charge. Maybe it was the fault of the cable, but this is my experience. It would take power for about 5 seconds, then the charge light would go out and the battery status would read "plugged in, not charging". RIP.

Performance leaves a little bit to be desired. I know I bought a thin and light, not a desktop replacement, but the 4gb RAM model was a mistake. I think my expectations were a little high for the 7200u, but rendering in Premiere kinda sucks on here. It's not bad, but it's time consuming. Lastly, why the hell isn't there an SD card reader? Like, not even a micro SD, there's just nothing. That was really disappointing when I brought this and my camera on a trip. Luckily, my phone has a micro SD reader, so I transferred photos to there, then to the computer. I really would have liked to see a card reader on here and a little more I/O, 1 USB 3 type A, one 3.0 type C, and one Thunderbolt 3. A bit disappointing, but I fortunately have't needed more than that.
So conclusion time. Overall, I am very impressed with what Lenovo has brought to the table in this mid range ultrabook bracket. While this isn't the top end model, this Yoga 720 does everything I ask of it with moderate confidence and looks damn fine while doing it. I probably ask too much of  it when I decide it's a great idea to try to get some work done on that video project I have going on, but the it's glorious in the classroom. The keyboard is just such a joy to dance across, and the glossy IPS screen delivers a beautiful picture, though it could be brighter. However, you will have to start carrying the charger, a microfiber cloth, and some USB (A and C) adapters if you want to get some real productivity out of it for a whole day or more. Unless you're one of those people that actually uses the touch screen on a laptop, I recommend turning the touch screen off, but if all of that isn't enough to dissuade you, I highly recommend  this machine to just about everyone.

AlanAlan reacted to AlTech in GTX 770 Re-review in 2017
A long time ago, almost 2-3 years ago I think, I reviewed the GTX 770. It wasn't the most amazing review ever by any stretch of the imagination and I recently re-reviewed it in a video format. I realize some people prefer written reviews to videos and so I've decided to make a written version.

    Context:
I've owned a GTX 770 from End of May 2014 and still own it as of me writing this.
I planned on buying a new GPU but the miners have been buying the GPUs I wanted to buy.
And I wanted to check out performance in 2017 so I ran a bunch of benchmarks and I'll give my thoughts on this.

    Introduction:
So, you may be asking why I'm making a post about the GTX 770 in 2017. Other than the fact that I do not have a new GPU to test, a lot of people have been buying used GK104 based GPUs for their rigs due to other GPUs (such as RX 570s and RX 580s) being too expensive because of the mining craze. I want to inform prospective buyers of used GK104 based GPUs what kind of performance they can expect in 2017.

Framerate was captured using Fraps 3.5.99 . MSI Afterburner and RTSS was used for monitoring information whilst running benchmarks. In some cases, benchmark tests were recorded using OBS Studio and Nvidia's NVENC encoder. This is a lightweight encoder which causes minimal loss in framerate (maybe between 5-10%).

FRAFS (Not Fraps) was used to get the 0,1% and 1% lows,

    OS: Windows 10 Build 15063 X64
    CPU: Intel core i5-4570
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr 4 GTX 770 2GB
    RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600
Drivers used; Nvidia 382.05 drivers since anything newer causes multi-monitor issues.

    Performance results:

So, you can obviously see that it can run at 60fps on many games. Maybe not necessarily at High settings but it can still do the job for 1080p Medium Settings.

But who should but this graphics card in 2017? Somebody with a Fermi GPU e.g. GTX 500 or GTX 400 series or older. Somebody with a pre GCN GPU on the AMD side could buy this.

How much should you buy one for? Probably around 100 USD max.

Already own one and want to sell it? It could probably sell for between 80-100 USD.

Should you buy one if you have a GPU which is newer than Kepler or GCN? Absolutely not. That would be almost as bad as buying a 580 for anything over $300 USD.

I believe the G7 is the one genrally recommended by most for video out of the 3, but I personally don't like m4/3 cameras due to the crop factor (which you've already mentioned).

I actually own the a6000 and am happy with the body, but not with the lenses in the ecosystem, I am a canon shooter and find that lenses for canon are cheaper when new, and if you include used offerings, the value proposition is not that great for sony, the fact that when adapted AF is cumbersome at best is a big turndown.

If you are going to invest in the sony ecosystem, I would steer away from the lenses you mentioned, the 16-50mm that came with mine is, in my opinion horrible, there are better lesnes available, although they tend to be much more expensive, but glass is much more important than the body in any case.

If anything, I would hold off for a bit, the a6500 is due to be released soon, so prices for the a6300 and a6000 are bound to come down.

I would also take a look at used a7's since they are quite close to the price of the a6000, if you are into that sort of thing.

The a6300 is better with lens adapters, which is what I'd look for.

AlanAlan reacted to Godlygamer23 in IObit Driver Booster 4 Free RC review
I understand that this is a review of an RC product, but I'm going to do it anyways because this is a version that IObit hopes will make it to the very end and become a "stable product," so here goes. I was actually updating IObit's Smart Defrag program on my PC, and it ran into an issue where I couldn't actually use the Update Now button, so I downloaded it manually, and landed on that page. So I said "what the heck," and decided to give it a shot on my laptop running Windows 10. The screenshots provided were taken with Snipping Tool, a default Windows 7(Vista too?) and above program. Bear in mind that all screenshots will be in spoilers to avoid excessive scrolling, and unneeded distractions.

The first interface that you're greeted with is where you're going to be performing your scan. It highlights a few things like "driver status," "Device Drivers," "Game Components," the whole "Oh if your drivers are out-of-date, then your PC could be unusable" information, and of course the ad at the bottom which is totally stupid and click-baity.
Alright, so I clicked on the scan button, so what happens after that?
The interface largely stays the same with a total of four things changing. The Scan button now turns into a Stop button, there's a percentage with a progress bar going around the button(please keep those. I love progress bars!), the driver that's currently being scanned, and the Activate Now button is grayed out. So far, the interface I'd say is actually pretty nice.

One additional screenshot showing the scanning process:
Moving on, we finally get the main window showcasing all of the drivers that need updated, and according to this program, I have a few that I could update.
Above are all of my outdated drivers, where the program is claiming they're extremely old. We also see another banner above saying "Hey, if you purchase our product, you can update an additional device!" I actually wonder what that device is, except it won't tell me, even if I click on it. But the banner does annoy me in another way as you'll see in a few screenshots. Up above, you'll see an "UpToDate" button which needs to be changed. IObit, if you're reading this, it should read "Up-to-date," not what you have there. They also have the "Action Center" tab which I'll highlight in another screenshot. They list the out-of-date drivers first, allowing you to do everything at one shot if it is permitted by the drivers.  As far as the control of the updates is concerned, the drop-down menu(not shown) provides the user with a few options: Details; Update; Roll Back; Uninstall; Ignore; and Export List. Most of them are pretty blank, except for Details, which will be shown below using one of Realtek's drivers as an example.

Here we have the Driver Details window. They give you the aforementioned options again which is nice, the version that you have, and the one that they want to install, even giving a little WHQL icon for user confidence(though it shouldn't necessarily bestow any). It also shows which device is using the driver, and the publisher as well. But, I wish they would've done something a little more with this, namely showing release notes if possible, so the user can make a more informed decision about their download. Some drivers are simply bug fixes that the user is not experiencing, and therefore the update is not necessary. Release notes would be useful here.

Now onto Action Center, which is something I like when programs incorporate in their own little way.
I love when companies bring all of their other programs together into one place, allowing the user to launch other apps that they may have installed and if I don't, they provide me with a link to get it, and the program is even telling me that I have an update for Smart Defrag. Awesome. But I have no idea how the issues were found with the "System Performance" section as this is not the point of the program.

After selecting which driver I want to install(I did them individually for the most part), it gave me a little installation notice:
They give a little notice that you may experience interference from your security software, and if you're updating the video card drivers, that you may experience a black screen and program crashes, but I think here IObit needs to improve on their sentence structure here a little bit. For the first part of the second notice, it should read: "You may encounter an occasional black screen and program crashes when updating graphics drivers." As for the second part of it, I would change it to "Please save your work and exit other running programs before proceeding" or something along those lines.

After installing a number of drivers, I get my first reboot prompt:
The update button now gets replaced with the Reboot button, but you can still update your other drivers if you so desire. After I clicked the reboot button, I got a second prompt which you can find below:
I like programs that remind the user to save their work and close everything before proceeding.

Okay, the last thing I wanted to show was the banner annoyance. This is something that I find to be completely unnecessary. The banner tells me everything that the company should honestly need to tell me, but it becomes invasive if you mouse over it as you will below:
Unfortunately, my mouse is not visible there because I used the Print Screen tool which apparently did not capture my cursor. But nonetheless, it now takes up the entire window where the drivers can be viewed. This needs to be changed as it is downright annoying. At least give us the ability to disable that function in the Settings.

Okay, so that was my rundown of the program from IObit strictly discussing the free version as you can tell. I found the program to be pretty competent at what it does, although my Intel Graphics driver will not install through the application which is odd. It keeps failing. But overall, I think that IObit developed a good program for people to use if they're worried about keeping all of their drivers up-to-date which also includes controller updates as well for say an Xbox 360 controller. I won't give an official rating for this program, nor will I personally use it, but for people who want something to do that for them, this may be up your alley.

So, school is coming, your laptop is dying and you can't afford an expensive one? Well, you came to the right place. This is a small list of laptops that are good and won't break your wallet.

    1) Acer SW3-013-146A (145$)

This is a 10" hybrid laptop. It has all the benefits of a laptop+a touchscreen. It has an Intel Atom, 2GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD. It's a pretty low speced machine for most basic tasks like web browsing and emailing.

    2) Lenovo ThinkPad 11e (250$)

This is a small AMD based laptop equipped with the dual core A4, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB mechanical hard drive. While it isn't the best specced laptop, it's compact and it can do general use things darn well.

    3) Dell Latitude 3440 14" (288$)

This puppy is a tad more on the mid range side. It has a 900p 14" screen, a Core i3 processor and a DVD drive. But, sacrifises had to be made, it only has 2GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.

    4) Lenovo G50 (310$)

With this laptop you're getting, in my opinion, the most value for the money. It's rocking a quad core A8, 500G HDD and a 15.6" 720p screen. While I would like a 1080p one, this one is good enough and should satisfy most users.
