i'm pretty sure it was the update to 1803 that did it. if you redownload the iso from Microsoft and reinstall using that it will already have that update on it.

can you try installing on a spare hdd or ssd just to see if it crashes? if not, then you know a reinstall will fix it.

Good point, that might be my only option unless someone knows of something else. Damn, I only just installed a fresh OS a few months ago when I bought a new drive. I hate Micro$oft, their updates always seem to break more things than they fix.

then it's been deleted.. i don't know how long Windows keeps old updates..

    is reinstalling Windows an option?

It's an option but a last resort for sure. It takes me a week and change to get everything back exactly as I like it (little anal/OCD)

Plus, there's no guarantee once I update Windows on the fresh OS it won't do it again.

  3. Hey everyone, I really need some help here please as this issue is driving me f'ing crazy!

I updated Windows a couple of weeks ago and since then I cannot run any games or synthetic GPU benchmarks. They load fine to the main menus... but the second the actual game world or benchmark loads and appears on the screen within a millisecond my PC shuts down instantly like there's a power outage.

    GPU:

    Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980Ti

    Things I've tried:

I've tried 3 different synthetic GPU benchmarks and about a dozen different games from the latest huge triple-A titles to tiny 8-bit indies, but the result is the same.

Tested games that were installed and worked fine before the Windows updates

Reinstalled the latest (397.93) Nvidia driver

    Rolled back to older drivers

Run Guru3D Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode to wipe all Nvidia files, then installed fresh again

Updating Windows and all Visual C++ packages

    Running CCleaner

    Removed overclocks

Checked all temps and voltages (nothing is even close to max temps or power)

    Different GPU cables

    Different PSU

And probably a few other things I've forgotten.

All of the above resulted in nothing, zero, nada. I have a dedicated gaming system that cannot run any games.

Can anyone offer me some help, please, this is turning my hair grey.
    Thank you

    [Edit]

EUREKA!! I have found the issue. Damn this is a huge weight off my mind, I was starting to think it was either my PSU dying or worse, my GPU that was failing.

    The Fix:
The most simple of things... reseating the GPU, that's it. I can't narrow it down to an exact thing because obviously reseating the card meant doing a few things, but it was either: the PCI connection to the mobo or the VGA power cables from the PSU - I'm 99% sure it was the PCI connection, no idea why or how it suddenly started causing an issue but it's the only logical explanation as the VGA power cables were plugged in correctly.
Maybe some magic fairy dust had worked its way in there and was causing a short, I dunno.

My blood pressure is slowly returning to normal :)
Now to make up for all that lost gaming time.

  4. [Fixed]

The Window update had reset the entire RealTek driver and Sound Manager, everything was back to default. I played around with it and many other sound settings for hours with no luck. Then I realised there are actually two separate sub settings menus in the RealTek manger, one does Connector Settings and the other is for Device Settings - I was trying one and completely overlooked the other menu as they're two little icons on different sides of the GUI.

In the Device Settings the default setting is to mute the rear device when the front device is plugged in, which wasn't the case for me, sound was coming through both devices at the same time, but anyway, the other option is to make the front and rear outputs separate which is what I needed. Once I changed that setting both my devices showed up in the Sound settings in RealTek and Windows so I can select and change between the two on the fly now.

Something so simple but I guess I'd been looking at it too long I couldn't see the wood for the trees. Still, it wouldn't have been an issue in the first place if Micro$oft in their *cough infinite wisdom would just stop resetting the entire OS back to default every frickin' time they release an update - I mean I don't remember XP or W7 resetting everything even when a service pack was installed, so why do they force it in W10, it's like a freshly installed OS every time I install an update and it takes half a day to get everything configured again.

This is why I've forced disabled updates with registry edits, Windows doesn't even check or prompt for major security updates, that's how annoying it is that I would rather live with security vulnerabilities than install a damn update. OK, I'm ranting again... *sigh my bad.

  5. [Edit] Resolved :)

I spent 3 flippin' days trying to fix this issue before I finally gave up and posted here hoping someone might be able to help me... then just 2 minutes after posting I found the fix, haha.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    Hey everyone.

Well, I can see a trend in the forums at the moment, it seems the recent Windows 10 updates have screwed a few people and I'm one of them.

I decided I should update Windows a few days ago and since then I've had issue after issue, most of them minor and just annoying which I managed to fix with a few hours of registry tweaks and spring cleaning, but one thing has remained and I cannot find what the hell Micro$oft has done to mess with it; (it drives me f*cking crazy that they force everything back to default, reinstalling and deleting all edits with every damn update!) Rant over.

To start I had no audio at all, no matter what I did I had zero audio, thankfully after 10+ restarts it seemingly fixed itself so I have audio working now, but the thing is now I only have one audio output even though I have two (speakers = front I/O and headphones = rear mobo I/O). All audio now outputs through both output devices at the same time, I no longer have an option to switch output devices between the two in the taskbar or sound options.
Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any advice on how to fix this, please?

Your best option is to take apart the card and use a pair of calipers to measure the thickness of the pads. In general higher W/mK helps with heat transfer but they aren't absolutely necessary unless your trying to squeeze every last bit from it.

    3

I did think of doing that but I thought the original pads would be squashed and might appear thinner than they were when they were installed, so I thought I'd ask around to see if anyone happened to know.

  7. Hi everyone, I've been trying to find out exactly what thickness the thermal pads are on the Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980Ti as I need to strip mine to repaste them as temps are getting pretty high on them over the past 6 months.
Most owners of the G1 980Ti I've asked say different values, anywhere from 0.5mm to 2.5mm, no one seems to know for certain, so if anyone here knows what thickness they are for 100% sure please let me know.

Also, with cooling something hot like the VRMs on a card like this, is there a minimum or optimal thermal transfer rating they need to have, e.g. W/mK - I saw EKWB pads are rated at 3.5W/mK but others from Thermal Grizzle go up to 10W/mK or more, so I wondered if maybe I need higher rated ones for running on air?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I've only ever used the pads that come included with a waterblock, I've never had to buy separate ones and replace them on a card when putting the stock coolers back on.

    Thanks, appreciate any advice.

[Edit] - Also, I tried contacting Gigabyte directly and they were as helpful as a chocolate fireguard! They took a week to reply and when they finally did reply it was a generic copy n' paste; "This information is privileged and for internal use, we cannot give this info out to the public. We do not encourage people to take apart our products, please contact our warranty departme... blar blar blar.

  8. So I was just about to set up a couple of extra Windows user accounts when it hit me, I don't think it will work. I need to have a few apps actually running and logged in on different accounts at the same time, so switching from one Windows user account to another will stop these processes, right?
I just did a quick Google and found a lot of threads on the Microsoft community forum asking about this and it seems, from what I've read, the feature to switch user accounts and still maintain apps and programs running one each account was removed some time ago :(

Someone please tell me if this is incorrect??

  9. Right, I understand. If he was gaming in a VM it would only be super basic games, at the moment he is playing my childhood retro games like Sonic (Mega Drive/Genesis) that sort of thing.

I'll do some reading into how you set one up and configure it then go from there. If you have any suggestions on where to get started I would be very grateful as I don't know if there are lots of different types of VMs or different software to use, easy and basic VMs or complex ones... I literally know nothing.

  10. 15 minutes ago, Levent said:

yes you can do that, depends on what you are doing, I have friends who use VM's in order have multiple game clients of some mmo games, Process is not complex at all you just gotta install whatever OS you plan on using inside the virtualization app you use.

OK, that's great that's actually similar to one of the scenarios I want to use it for.

I have my main Steam account and 2 admin accounts for servers I run, plus my youngest is now getting into little basic games too, so he uses my rig to play them. Every time I have to sign out and change accounts which again it only takes a few minutes, but once you've done that 10+ times a day it adds up.
So one of my uses was going to be having my main Steam account logged in on the system, then a couple of VMs running with Steam logged into my youngest's account and one of my admin accounts, so I can quickly swap and check whats going on in a server and if my little one wants to play while I'm doing something else he can use his Steam account on a VM as well.

    Is that possible to do?

  11. First off, sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong thread, I couldn't find a thread that mentioned VMs.

Hey everyone, I have a question or two regarding VMs. I think I get what VMs are but I have zero knowledge of how you use them, what for, how to set them up... complete noob in other words. So anyone that answers please explain like I'm 5yo.

The Question/s: I need to know if it's possible to use a VM on a windows system to log into an app (which connects to the web) using separate accounts at the same time? Example: on the main OS I would be logged into an app with account A, then using VM1 I would be logged into the same app but using account B, and again with another VM and using account C. Does that make sense? If it does make sense, is this possible and would it be simple enough for a noob to set up or would it require something complex?

Reason for asking; I use an app every day but I have to switch accounts a lot depending on which project I'm working on. As I use 2-step I sometimes need to go find my phone, plus I use ridiculously complex passwords that are impossible to remember so I store them on a tablet next to the system that doesn't (can't) connect to the web and then have to type them in by eye. Therefore it takes a good 5+ minutes sometimes to switch accounts and when I might have to switch 2 or 3 times in the space or 30 minutes it gets really tedious. So I'm hoping VMs might be the answer.

  12. Hey everyone, I'm trying to step up my audio game from the typical gaming headsets, so I've purchased a pair of Sennheiser HD 598. Their main use will be gaming, movies and a little music.

What I would like to know is, would motherboard onboard audio be good enough to really get the most out of these headphones, I know my mobo will physically drive these headphones no problem but would I really be getting the full experience or would the onboard audio be holding them back?? Therefore, should I be looking to get a soundcard and/or amp??
My system is a bit old but still reasonably decent, running 3770k on the Z77 platform, the mobo in question is the ASUS Z77 Sabertooth and I'd be connecting them to the 3.5mm on the mobo rear I/O.

Any advice or recommendations would be great, thanks.
