  1. Update It's been some time since I've looked on craigslist for much of anything. But I'm glad today I did. For about $350 I purchased a 42U Sun Microsystems server rack and two Mac Xserve servers. How could I not go wrong! The server rack Brand new is easily $1,500 to $2,000 and the Mac servers used any where between $100 and $500. The two Xserve servers are a little different I guess... Xserve G5 (pcitured bellow) pcu: unknown ram: 8gb 2 hot swap bays needs a new PSU and HDD's Xserve #2 pcu: 2x 2 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon ram: 16gb 2 hard drives with hot swap running OS X and finally got the rack in the basement! So overall it was a good deal, and if I don't use the Xserve servers I'll probably part them out. But to get the rack at the price I did was well worth the investment even though I planned on waiting.
  2. Greetings everyone! I recently came into some money and decided to devote a small percentage of that into some linux web servers for my web development company that I run out of my house. The goal was to spend no more than $2,000 overall and keep each unit under $500 without making much of a sacrifice. Since this is my first large scale server build I also had to include some minuscule things such as Ethernet cable, cable crimper and a network switch. Now before questioning why I didn't go with server grade components... Reliability was not the intent for these servers. I have a dedicated server that has server grade components intended for network backups of each server. I'll get into that server in a moment. So how many servers am I building? The final total from amazon was $1,789. That's 3 servers! What makes up these servers? here is the amazon cart! The rosewill chassis is going to be used to replace the case of the server I currently have. Eventually I will invest some money into a proper rack for these servers but in the mean time I'll using a industrial shelving unit in my frigged basement. Here are the specs of the current server I have that will be running network backups and will also load balance these new servers: MB: SuperMicro MBD-x9SC-FO (Micro ATX) Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1230 3.2GHz (raid coming soon) RAM: 1 kingston 8gb DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered HDD: 2 3TB Segate Barracuda ST3000DM001 (most regretted purchases ever... going to replace soon) PSU: High Current PRO 750W I'll be posting updates along the way when I start getting the parts. Please let me know if you have any questions!
  3. I would assume that they put in extensive measures since the console hacked money fiasco. I know they wan't to protect online from situations like this because they can make profit off of selling shark cards. The fact that people found a way to hack money legitimately surprises me and at the same time doesn't! As long as you didn't intentionally seek out the money I think you should be fine, as long as your report it quickly and don't spend the money.
