  1. I recently cracked out my 3 years old Wraith Spire that came with my 1600. I am planning to use it on a computer I'm about to build. I've never used it so it still had the pre-applied thermal compound on it, though the compound did turned yellow. I wiped it off with some ethanol, but found blemishes on the copper contact. The surface still feels very smooth. My first guess is that the thermal compound corroded the copper. Will this affect its cooling ability much?
  2. Thanks both! Yes the PSU isn't the best. Steve from GamerNexus did say that PSU may become more available towards the mid of this month. Mesh is a good idea. I might go for the NR400 w/ ODD, which might be around 60GBP. When they eventually get stocked. I can't find the Fractal Design Focus G or the mini version anywhere. Its at a good price though. As much as I'd like to fit the 3600 in with a MSI Mortar mobo, its just going to blow the budget with everything else...
  3. Budget (including currency): £600 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Autodesk Revit, Photoshop, Chrome tab warrior Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I managed to scrape together £600 (up from £300) for building a productivity desktop for a family member for her upcoming birthday. She currently has a HP Slimeline with a 5W TDP CPU. Obviously, with the whole human malware thing going on, its pretty hard to get parts. The PSU isn't ideal, but thats the best I could get for now, maybe as a place holder on this list. She will be carrying her 2TB HDD over. And yes she really wants a DVD drive. I'm not sure what case to choose. I think she'll like something 'light' and simple - minimalist sort of thing. At most a strip of RGB at the front maybe. I'd appreciate some suggestions. 4. What's your budget? They are quite similar in gaming performance (so it seems). But RX570 is ~10% cheaper in the UK, so between those I'd get the RX570. I'd get a cheaper CPU e.g. ryzen 3300x or 3100, and get a better GPU e.g. RX580
  5. @Herman Mcpootis Thanks for the heads up. I haven't really looked into the used market at all. I have no experience in buying second hand things, and don't want to get screwed over. I just read on the REVIT forum (not sure why hadn't thought of doing that before), and the posts there recommend lower core count with higher clock speed. I guess I really have to go for Intel for those characteristics if I were to stay under £300.
  6. Budget (including currency): Below £300 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Web browsing (loads of tabs). CAD tools e.g. REVIT for Architecture and Design. Photoshop. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I'm building this for a family member. I've had enough of seeing her raging over how slow her crappy HP slimeline is (just to give you an idea, it has a 5W TDP soldered CPU). She mainly uses it for web browsing, and also to do her architecture 3D design work on it. I just need something cheap to improve her quality of life. She already has peripherals and a 1080p monitor. I'll provide a spare SSD so storage is not included in the list below. I'm not sure what case to choose. I think she'll like something 'light' and simple - minimalist sort of thing. 7. Ignore my last message. I just realised you meant disk usage. Sorry. Have you tried re-installing chrome?
  8. Hi LTT community! This the the rig in question: Bascially: Ryzen 1600 @3650MHz, Core VID 1.281V (This is the highest clock speed I could stably get under 1.30V, so no I didn't win the silicone lottery.) ASUS DUAL GTX 1070 O8G ASRock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming-mITX/ ac Corsair SF450 Silverstone SG13 Now for the RAM: Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 2x8GB I'm trying to OC it to 3200MHz. For timings and voltages, I used 1usmus' Ryzen DRAM calculator v.1.7.0, using the 'Safe' presets. The recommended (Rec.) values are the settings I used, where applicable. NOTE: ASRock's BIOS only allows DRAM voltages at increments of 50mV, so I set it at 1.35V, and SOC voltage can only be set as a offset of a fluctuating, automatically adjusted value, so I left it blank (http://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=5808&title=what-is-the-default-soc-voltageab350-gamingitx-ac). *I suspected that there is an error by 1usmus, as it recommended tRC of 42. I've read that tRC >= tRP + tRAS, so it should be 48 or above. Here is my question. I cannot for the life of me use a tRC of 48. In fact, set it anything below 56 it just simply won't POST, it won't even do a boot loop. Is there anything I could change to get tRC lower? I won't want to set the voltage any higher as it only goes in increments of 50mV, and I am not sure if the board could handle that, along with the restricted cooling in this ITX build. And does a higher value of tRC really matters at all? BONUS QUESTION: I've just put in a new NVMe M.2 SSD. And funny enough the system went into a boot loop, and reset my RAM OC settings (but not CPU). After some testing, the new minimum tRC is now 60. Anyone know why this is the case? Thanks in advance.
  9. Thanks man! I got a bit OCD doing the cables.
  10. The whole setup costs £1400. Inc. all peripherals. It does look like you need an upgrade.
  11. Hello all. After much conversing and intelligence gathering, I have finally built my first every PC - my ticket to the master race. I went an ITX build because I want to take it to LAN parties, even though many people have voiced their opinion that master race newborns should not dabble with ITXs. Anyhow, here are the parts: CPU: Ryzen R5 1600 Graphics card: ASUS DUAL GTX 1070 O8G RAM: 2x8GB Corsiar Vengeance 3200MHz Storage: 250GB SanDisk Ultra II SSD Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD MOBO: Asrock Fata1ity Gaming/ITX AB350 PSU: Corsair SF450 Case: Silverstone SG13 CPU cooler: Noctua - NH-L9x65 Front intake fan: Noctua NF-F12 PWM Exhaust fan: Fractal design R3 50mm Monitor: LG23MP68VQ Keyboard: TurtleBeach Impact 600 Misc: SFX to ATX power supply adaptor bracket PP08 ASUS SDRW 08D2S-U LITE Tights, 20 Denier Corsair CP-8920190 Sleeved SATA Cable, Red/Black TAAADDAAA~~~ You have no idea how excited and happy I was Of note: Asrock have 'fixed' their VRM heatsink-thermal pad issue: White GPU, Red/Black mobo, Poo-y CPU cooler... Yea, the colour scheme is all wrong and miss matched. But who cares as long as I like it! It's alive!!! Now time to prep the case: I do like Asrock's IO shield: At this point, I thought cable management will be easy. I mean, there is so much room. What's all the fuss about? Errr getting a bit cosy now... Note: I had to get a different Corsair's SATA power cable as the one that came with the PSU aren't flat enough. I do like the red and black, and also the fact that its individually sleeved though. ARGHHH cables everywhere! And why do they have to be so stiff?? This is the best I can manage. Not bad for a first time builder...? And here is the finished product! What's the abomination I hear you ask? Well. . . . . . . . . . I used lady's tights as dust filter, and it is SO hard to get right. It ended up looking like this form the inside: Yea... Next up will be benchmarks and my attempts at OC! Thanks for reading!
  12. Otherwise, yea 550W seems like a reasonable choice.
  13. Use this: http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/
  14. Good luck getting the RX580 in reasonable time. But if you don't mind waiting, pre-order the £219 Sapphire pulse one from amazon - it's at a very good price. Otherwise, get a 1070. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-1070-SC-ACX-3-0-Black-Edition-8GB-GDDR5-VR-Ready-Graphics-Card-/132327855431?epid=1582910066&hash=item1ecf5ad547:g:~4sAAOSwtRBZuTsk
  15. Thank you all for your help. I guess I'll know if I've done a good job when I finish assembly and benchmark it! Please look out for my post!
  16. As the title suggests, have I applied enough thermal paste?
  17. Yea they fixed that. The new batch had a thinner thermal pad
  18. I've been holding off for 2.5 months to buy the RX 580. Contacted Sapphire and Gigabyte in late August ,and both had 'no idea' when they can finishing meeting the demand of miners and get enough cards onto the market. The Sapphire rep said: "We need to be patient, the production is scaling and the throughput of GPU factories is growing. We're not there yet, but it's getting a tiny bit better. There's hope!" I eventually gave in and got the GTX 1070 - slightly inflated in price, but a) I get a card, so my other parts don't need to lay around anymore, and b) it's more 'future proof', and most importantly c) they are in bloody stock.
  19. Im guessing for gaming? What's the rest of your build like? i.e. CPU, PSU, monitor.
  20. Apologies for dwelling on this matter. Your opinions are appreciated. I have decided to blow my budget and get the GTX 1070. I am considering two models that are at similarly ‘low’ prices (~£400): Asus GTX 1070 Dual OC EVGA GTX 1070 SC Gaming Black Edition ACX 3.0 I really do not like EVGA’s exterior design, so in the looks department, I’m more incline to get the ASUS. ASUS also has 6 phases, compared to EVGA’s 4. It is also SLIGHTLY higher OC’ed. However, EVGA do have (much?) better cooling, and this model is ‘more reputable’. What do you guys think? How much did the aesthetics of parts influence your build?
  21. There aren't any cheap second hand GTX 970 in the UK. Or rather I refuse to pay £170+ for a 2 year old warranty expired card that originally cost £240 Looks like I'll go for the 1070. I've found a Superclocked black edition of it for £408, and is new. Is that a good deal? Will my PSU handle the system? (i think it will, but would like a second opinion.)
