  1. If you have to ask, maybe you should: A: Read the manual of your PSU and motherboard. B: Check out some build guides @ YT before you build your first computer In general all cables are labeled, PSU are labeled on its end and every connector on the MB, HDD/SSD, GPU and so on only fits one way and isn't interchangeable on the peripheral end. You can't really do it wrong. It's more or less like building legoTM
  2. Intel hasn't done any greater gains in the last generations and the 6850K is a beast of a processor, both then and now ? And paired with your graphics card(s) there truly is no limit besides poorly optimized games. I would dare to say that most people won't see any issues with performance if they just deactivated that FPS-counter in their games. The only reason they think there is an issues is because a number is saying so in the corner of the screen, not real world feeling of how smooth (or not) it is on the screen ? "-Look mummy, I have a bottleneck... the number on the screen tells me that my game isn't smooth ?" And "1080p" gaming is just some gimmicky shit that became "standard" when flat screen TV:s and HD/HD-ready became a thing. Resolution and development took a dive to the worse when that happened. Before that it was easy to find monitors with good (and greater) resolutions like 1920x1200 or 2550x1600. Now, still ten years later "1440p" is still something that most don't use, in my world there became a regression as 1920x1200 resolution and greater was good (and a common resolution on (good) screens) when "720p" and "1080p" became the norm. Yes, I know I'm "old", I was just as mad when TFT became a thing, and still it took years to beat the CRT in terms of screen quality, resolution and refresh rate. Even if a TFT is much nicer to lug around or in terms of real estate, it was like night and day looking at a good CRT and a TFT. Wasn't until "IPS-panel" became available the "TFT-screens" became usable with good viewing angles, colour correctness, panel quality and so on. What does I mean with all this old folks rambling? Make up some buzzwords and you can sell a polished turd as a diamond... ?
  3. For those that have fallen we salute you ? You did go out with a pop and released "the smoke" aka the soul of your capacitors and took the fuse for the entire upper floor, literally lights out ? ? Thanks for your service in my old spare rig, C2Q 9550 @2.8 GHz, Asus P5Q WS & GTX 750 Ti, and for the fold that took your life, you left like a true hero.... ? ? Now Mr. CX600M from the land of Corsair have taken your turn on team ITNOS ?? ??
  4. More then enough even if you go with dual Vega 64...
  5. We wish... there is none. There was a "contest" for the month of November that was organized by some members here at the forum, honor and glory was the reward for participation. LTT chipped in with three prizes at a later stage to encourage the initiative. BUT we fold all year long and for the joy and glory of ITNOS (in the name of science) ? That, and heating in the winter ? You are more than welcome to join the team and our own lair in the folding subforum ?
  6. Got my bill for last month today.... about $200 and about 1200 kW/h more than the month before ? Even if it's the first cold has struck for the winter and the higher bill is expected, but not that high ? Luckily I already have bought my new graphics card and picked it up today from the post office ? Vega 56 Baby ? ? Already have about 25-26 C with 2 x Xeon 2670 with a nVidia 1060 going full bore in my room with fans pushing the heat out and about in the rest of the house ?
  7. Now when the contest is over it's time to put in the big push ? The trend for most is that their production is declining, mine does the opposite ?
  8. The 1080 was for the "all time" top 100 participants on LTT folding team. The 2 x 1070 are for everyone that that folds for LTT that have entered the raffle that closed yesterday and is announced on Monday.
  9. Came in on a clean place 80 ? Didn't even think that I even would make it to top 100 as it was first in late week 2 that I started folding. among the first to register for the event tho... ? Better late then never ? Returned the RX 590 today as I won a Vega 56 on the local "eBay" today ? More ? and ? for slightly less then the cost of the 590 and it will work out of the box in Linux ?
  10. This is amazing, I can't think of a better or more worthy (randomly selected or not) person for this prize. A huge shout out ? to @Ben Quigley for all the amazing work he and the "staff" for this foldng month has done for the community. Mad respect to alla off you. ?? To @Ben Quigley ?????
  11. Yeah... a real bummer, ordered it this Tuesday, got it Wednesday and It just black screened on me so it laying here besides me on the desk mocking me with its shiny blue fan-shroud... ? waiting for team red to fix their shit ?
  12. I'm continuing going full bore at F@H and Bionic, and I have already purchased a Radeon RX 590 Nitro+ that shall assist my trusty old GTX 1060 but I have to wait until I can get this up and running because problem with some screw up with support for Linux.
  13. Holy badgers.... I have broken both topp 100 for this event and top 1000 in the LTT team ?? https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=759561
  14. ? Just wired $10 his way with a note thanking him for all his help and for his amazing site for all nerds of statistics and F@H
  15. I'm placing an order on a Sapphire RX 590 right now... or two... ? All because off this event that had me return to folding, besides Boinc, and the thrill off the finish sauna ? ? that shall help my trusty dual Xeon 2670 with its 1060 and my old Core2Quad 9550 with its 750 Ti to heat my house, or shall I say, the thrill off the LTT "ITNOS" Power ? ? EDIT: Just one for the time being, don't think my two daughters will appreciate that their christmas presents is one of two new graphics cards in my workstation ? EDIT 2: The 1070 (or both ?) is naturally mine. I'm preparing my speech right now, you know, "if" i win ? Or else.... EDIT 3: Badger tax
  16. Paused the Boinc-client and activated F@H-client again to help out for the upcoming month ? Dual Xeon E5-2670 and a 1060 at your service ?
  17. @teeshirt_Tim, you are right in that the preferred orientation of the PSU is with the fan facing downwards and thus the cables are on the left side and easier for hiding and management. All cases with a shred of dignity has filtered intakes at the bottom for the PSU intake and if you doesn't put your case on your cat or something equally furry there is nothing much to worry about. I putting the computer on a (furry) rug or you have lots of cats get a piece of hardwood to put your computer on, or as I have done, 2 2x4 placed on its side and put my case on so it is elevated 4" + it's feets up above the floor. Makes it easy for cleaning with the vacuum under the case to ?
  18. Then you know it is working as it should. The hotter the room and ambient temp is, the harder is it to cool the system and your temps are just fine. If you want to test if there is a problem with airflow just take your front of the case and see if there is a significant difference on full load. You could always try to ramp up the fan, and the difference in temp between 88% and 100% can make all the difference, but it is also about to find the sweet spot between temp and noise level. In your case (pun intended) anything above 88% makes the sound unbearably.
  19. For such old hardware it is a pain to find drivers, bios and so on. Your best bet is to find a active forum for vintage hardware and ask there.
  20. @Peskanova I'm with you and I like the way that you want to share your experience and that you have learnt from your mistake. I learnt that not to poke around in a PSU and CRT:s by word of mouth and learning from my boss at the computer shop, he was oldschool from the mainframe days of the 60:s and 70:s and used oscilloscope and volt-meters to troubleshot faulty PSU:s, monitors, motherboards and other things and soldered new caps and what not. Everything with electrics should be handled with care, and some things are more dangerous than other things. A good rule of thumb is to try to read up on the subject before you open up, so that you have some know how of what to do or look after when there is electricity involved. If the purpose was to clean out the dust, there is little reason to open up a PSU other if there ha been a smoker around it. Some compressed air and you are good to go without opening the PSU. Look at it from the bright side, you won't make the same mistake again And you are right, there is much garbage PSU:s on the market. And the growing import of cheap knock-offs and just real bad products is a problem. But as I mentioned, there are bad products among all makers and vendors. The cheaper the segment they are competing in, the worse the problem gets, it hits a limit were you can't go cheaper without sacrificing quality. Then there are the problem when a segment get to popular, like with high wattage PSU:s, 1KW and up, there is a blooming market that many want to be a part of, but not want to sink the money in it to get quality. It's like a get rich quick scheme. Look just at EVGA, they live on their good reputation but many of their PSU:s are not that great. Some are real good, but most aren't. Seasonic is regarded as a good brand, but they have a fair number of not so good PSU:s. I must say that we here on LTT are lucky to have so many knowledgeable persons on PSU:s like STRMfrmXMN, Stefan Payne, JonnyGURU, Aniallation and so on.
  21. Why should you get informed on PSU:s and their inner workings when you study programming? And regarding people that opens up a PSU or those old CRT monitors and TV:s and stick a screwdriver in there like a fool, yea... That's why The Darwin Awards was invented. Nothing can stop people that lacks common sense. And for the rest they learn the hard way that quality matters. It doesn't matters if it's a case or a PSU, cheap is almost always = crap. The worst part is that when people become brand zelots and makes brand X = good and brand Y = crap. The problem is that is not so trivial, the most brands regardless if it's tech or cars or... they are all making good and not so good products, and they know people will buy because in is brand X, and brand X have a good reputation because the people that know and stays informed know what is good and what is bad. How do we know such stuff? Well, we are interested of computer tech and more specific hardware, we have countless hours in research, years of reading and learning on tech websites and forums and we are selective of what youtubers that are good and knowledgeable and those who are not. We have sunken hours and years of time to be as knowledgeable as we are. We have learnt to smell BS miles away and as usual, very much on the internet is pure BS and misinformation. Just read a thread or two on this forum and there are so many answers that are dragged out of their butt that isn't funny. I sure don't know everything, but I try to answer as informed as I can be, I can sometimes put an hour or two on research on a topic before I answer and I always try to back it up with facts and links. Am I always right, hell no... but I appreciate when I get a good and informed correction back so I can expand my knowledge. My "career" begun when I deleted autoexec.bat, config.sys and command.com in the root of the DOS-partition on my 386 SX-16 when I was young, because a friend told me that no files should be stored in the root on the system disk. How I freaked out when the computer couldn't boot the next time, I was sure I had bricked it... fast forward five years and I was working as a tech at the local computer shop and repaired and installed new systems, networks and servers. Because I wanted to learn and sunk countless hours of my life in learning computers and network, both the hard way and learning by fixing my mistakes, and hours and hours online on forums and so on. Never taken a class in computers in my whole life, learnt by experience and interest.
