I like Bitwarden, it has mobile apps, a desktop app, and browser extentions. Just make sure you never lose your vault password with it because the only way to reset the password is while logged in.

It's really just a GUI for rsync (assuming you're using the rsync method) so just use rsync to move the copy elsewhere and configure Timeshift to output to there. I personally have an NFS share on my server mounted through fstab at /timeshift for this express purpose. If you wanted to store it on a secondary drive, mount either a partition or a directory on the secondary drive to /timeshift in fstab.

So I have a single guide that I've made on the forum in 2016, which at this point is slightly out of date but wouldn't take much to update content wise and fix images that are broken. Since making it, it has been locked twice due to "necro" replies which doesn't make sense to me when it comes the concept of guides. The first time, it was unlocked at my request as I pointed out locking guides is not helpful if someone replies after a period of inactivity of the thread. I was at least notified by the mod who locked the thread that they were locking it through a PM. The second time being locked, I was not notified and didn't even realize it was locked until a user that had recently joined PM'd me asking about the guide because they couldn't in the thread. I still don't know when that locking occurred either.

TL;DR I don't think Guides/Tutorials should be locked due to "necro."  I had suggested this to the original mod and they agreed..

You're right, topics like that shouldn't be locked. We recently updated our internal policies to clarify that (when discussing another topic in a similar situation).
    I have unlocked your topic.

For anyone who also cares about privacy I would recommend setting up DNS over HTTPS, that way all your requests are encrypted. You can find the official guide here.

Also if you want to use your DNS server away from home you can follow this official guide here. But setting it up to have a VPN and DNS server there are some changes that we need to do that don't follow the guide.
Under "installation", you can skip the install pi-hole part since you should already have installed pi-hole. (For more experienced linux users: the port of the openvpn server can be anything. But make sure the port isn't already in use or that your ISP blocks it when port forwarding. Can be handy to bypass port blocks by using port 433 or 80) Skip finding the IP under "Setup OpenVPN Server" and change `10.8.0.1` to the ip of your RPi(Raspberry Pi) which you already have if you followed Jake's guide. Before creating an user follow this: Run command: `openvpn --genkey --secret ta.key` Edit the config file and add this line: `tls-auth ta.key 0`
(This adds an encryption layer between the client and the server, so some extra security) You can probably skip "Firewall Configuration" since Raspbian doesn't have a firewall pre-installed and you also don't have installed any Follow these parts of "Optional: Dual operation: LAN & VPN at the same time" Add this line to your `/etc/openvpn/server/server.conf`: `push "route 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0"` but change `192.168.2.0` to your subnet which you can find in your ip, for example if your ip is: `192.168.1.43` you replace `192.168.2.0` with `192.168.1.0` and with `192.167.8.28` you replace it with `192.167.8.0`. But if your IP is for example `10.8.0.7` you'll probably need to replace the whole line with `push "route 10.8.0.0 255.255.0.0"`. Run this command: `pihole -a -i all` After this port forward `1194` or the port you decided to use on your router, you can find guides online.  Let me know if you find a mistake in this.

I agree. Its probably only subforum where necroing isn't issue. But I know that there are users on forums who think 2 weeks is enough for necro in some other sections, like Tech News.

You can have a VM act as your container host and have other VMs for services that aren't containerized. The issue with Docker only is that certain things don't work well with non-standard ports, for example DNS.

Performance is usually pretty good in my experience since each individual service typically doesn't require much by itself. There isn't really a noticable difference between a bare metal install and running in a VM. It also allows you to have a unique IP on your LAN for each one and you don't have to worry about port conflicts if you want to use things that will overlap, for me, that would be Pihole and Lancache since they both make use of port 53, DNS. I have it going: client->lancache->pihole->upstream DNS. My Lancache Ubuntu Server VM is currently using about ~250MB of RAM total for the whole VM with negligible CPU usage whilst caching a download I have going at the moment. I can't foresee it using much more resources whilst providing the data for clients. The game servers are likely to use the most but you can easily adjust the amount of resources allocated to each VM if needed.

Use PROXMOX as your OS, it's a hypervisor meant to run VMs. This allows you to segment the different services you're running into different VMs which makes it easier to manage in my opinion. I would definitely have the caching server as a VM though. 16GB of RAM is a good starting point.

So I finally got a lancache VM up and running tonight after working on it for a good part of the day, the documentation is so so and partially out of date in some parts due to the project going from just steam caching to multi service caching. Not generally needed for 1-2 users but I find my game installs break sometimes, especially if I reinstall Linux, and I have very slow download speeds (currently 5Mbps but going to 25 after next billing cycle). Having to redownload games that are potentially 80+GB is painful (looking at you ESO). I have it set up to go client->lancache->pihole->upstream dns. This is also easier to maintain than some sort of backup method instead of caching.

My next project will probably be getting the Sickbeard MP4 Automator python script to encode my media files into Plex direct play friendly format automatically upon download yarr harr if they aren't already.

Probably not recommended unless you have decent airflow going over the VRMs of the board.
