You'll want a CPU that supports AES-NI.  I'd suggest something based on an Intel "Q" chipset, and a CPU that supports Intel AMT, so you can remote into the machine with VPro.

Haswell is probably the sweet spot these days in terms of used gear.

If you can live with a single Gig-E, then eBay is full of Lenovo M73's with Intel i5-4570T CPU's, Q87 chipset, and some RAM for $120-$150.

Which is better more cores(assuming pf sense uses more than one core/can be opened on multiple cores) or high core speeds?

  2. Looking to build a router that will handle Private internet access vpn at 1gbps. The os will be pfsense. May I get a parts list from the community. Budget is $500. I'd like it to be a mini itx or smaller. Going this route vs a prebuilt pia router as to have the option to use this as a storage server in the future.

500 $ seems excessive. Maybe something like a  AMD 220GE? 4 GB of RAM and a bit HDD Storage with a SSD-Cache drive? That would probably still be cheaper

Prebuilts that are fanless go for $416 ish.

If I'm wanting to keep a constant 1gbps flow I'd like to have more power than is necessary in case load gets high.

  5. and op could have all these things sitting around his house so buying a access point could be the more expensive route. That also brings you to the why not point of the build. I just dont see the point of the useless post when this gentlemen or gentlewomen is just trying to do something that perks there interest which modding/custom building is a BIG part of what the community is about...

i actually have Old computers lying around. plus I'd like to make this a nas/router. My house uses home plugs so , I'd like to feed the plugs a more reliable connection. Why spend the money for a Pre-built nas when i can just add the ssd drives to a computer i have lying around. Even windows would work for backing up my raid 0 to a nas.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/disk-imaging-to-nas.779033/ I'm the OP so thats what I'd like from my nas that i will build.

  6. Is it possible to have tow inputs on my av2 homeplug network. I will be using a network switch between the output of one homeplug plugged into the input of the network switch and output of the network switch into the other homeplug to act as a second input. I'd like to do this as there are 2 breakers in the house that i am renting and the sustanded speeds are really poor in the rooms with the second breaker.

  7. i was wondering since the house I am renting has multiple breakers, would it be possible to take the out put of one Av2 homeplug plugged into a network switch as input. take the output of the network switch and run it to the area where the 2nd breaker starts for a more reliable and faster data signal? In the end i'd like to have 2 inputs on the homeplug network.
