  1. YES million times YES to this. People forget that if something breaks in their self built "workstation" they have no where to go and have to figure out what is wrong and deal with fixing/replacing on component by component basis. Companies would not even consider letting someone buy and build self built machine because downtime is $$$$. And yes Linus's whining - "I dont know how to use this so its bad" is really annoying. Linus you know you dont have to use inbuilt apps? You don't use windows inbuilt player, right? Try to look around the corner for much better apps than those that come preinstalled. Maybe spend a week or so learning the OS.
  2. Why extreme i7 and not some high core count xeon? So why not some crazy 24 core E7 xeons?
  3. Your method works but is incredibly slow for numbers > a few thousands. You should look into implementing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sieve_of_Eratosthenes.
  4. Probably, it has most resources(Arch has way better docs, but not as easy for someone new to linux) to help you on your way, has packages ready for almost all things so you dont need to compile stuff yourself. But considering low powered pc I would suggest you take a look at http://lubuntu.net/, it uses LXDE which is the thing that draws your desktop and it is quite a bit lighter on recources compared to unity which ubuntu uses, but you still get benefits of ubuntu community since Lubuntu is based on ubuntu.
  5. Not even all linux distros will run great, so either you dig up a copy of XP or go with something like Lubuntu or maybe Elementary OS if you are new to linux it might be a bit easier. On the other hand if you want a truly well running system go arch route. It will allow you to just load up things you actually need and you will learn a LOT about how your system works, but be prepared to a few days of tinkering if you are new to linux.
  6. No it was Cooler Master Silent Pro 1000w so relatively decent if old psu.
  7. So today at 5am I was woken by the fact that circuit breaker was tripped (the click of my circuit breaker is very loud). To be sure I unplugged my pc from AC power just to be safe. When I plugged my pc back in I heard very loud noise that sounded like coil whine I unplugged pc and went to bed. Now when I woken up the coil whine is still there or almost non existent or much quiter, but pc wont turn on. I dont have spare psu laying around, so cant test that. I suspect that it was my psu that tripped the power and its dead now. What should I do now?
  8. To be java's syntax is almost the same as c# to the point when some code snippets can be the same, although I find C# to be a bit cleaner in some places. Considering you have quite a bit of experience(assuming you had experience you mentioned in professional setting) I would suggest just going to developer.android.com(or what ever the address is) and just going through the initial tutorial and than just learning android from docs. If you want a more structured approach udacity have a great course in android development - https://www.udacity.com/course/developing-android-apps--ud853 which I am taking now
  9. So I was trying to get all updates installed in order to be eligible for win 10 upgrade, but when windows update tries to install ie11 it fails with 9C59 error code. Also manual installation of ie11 does not work saying a error has occured, try again. Searching microsoft knowledge base I did not find any solutions that worked.
  10. Hi, do any of you know if it is possible to run normally working hackintosh on t440s from lenovo. My config is i7(4600u), 8gb ram and hd4400 graphics and intel ac wifi chip(Intel Dual Band wireless ac 7260)
  11. No, I have been freelance web-developer for 2 years now and had "pleasure" of working with both php(it's like crossfit, gives good results fast, but in the long run will break your neck and back) and ruby (better than php, but slow). If you want to get into web stuff I suggest starting out with python by going through learn python the hard way, than picking up "python head first" which will give you some knowledge about how to use python for different applications. After that depends on what you want to do. If you want to do web development than you should look into either Flask framework or Django.
  12. Problem with procedural approach is that it works only for relatively small/not complex projects, if you want to make a distributed system of any complexity the functional approach is the way to go because of the guaranties you get with it. As far as OP's question goes I think the best way to go about learning programming is find a (real!)problem to solve, the real part is important here because it will give you extra motivation. Since you know java perhaps try getting into android development there are plenty of android programming courses(coursera etc.)
  13. Please stop recommending php as a first language, its terrible for that.
  14. Start learning programming and get into neural networks, you'll soon wish for a small rack with at least about 4-6 xeons and 200gb+ of ram total split between perhaps 2 or 3 servers. Oh and almost forgot eventually you'll want to get quadro gpus for your small servers so you can use dat GPU power.
  15. Mainly that my 7970ghz and 2500k runs most things on near ultra or at least high at 60fps. The only recent game that made me want to upgrade is project cars. But I am still very pleased with performance of it - round 60fps with medium high settings(clear wheather and about 15ai), but rain still kills the performance it drops to like 30 or perhaps less
