If anyone wants to make some news topics I got two smaller scale stories.

CERN is currently trying to abandon Microsoft and has publicly announced what they call "MAlt". The reasons for the switch are:

  • They have noticed that Microsoft has created strong vendor lock-in with their products, making it difficult to incorporate or switch to solutions from other vendors. CERN do not want to be at the mercy of Microsoft.
  • Gain more control over their sensitive data.
  • Reduce costs. Microsoft recently decided that CERN is no longer going to get the academic institution rebates they have previously had, and as a result the licensing costs over at CERN has increased by more than a factor of ten.

Mozilla is "evolving" the Firefox brand.

Firefox will now be an umbrella brand including several different software and services. The browser will continue to be called "Firefox", but other browser and Interne related services from Mozilla will also have "Firefox" in their names, such as "Firefox Monitor" and "Firefox Send". They are also changing the icons of their services to be more consistent and follow the same design language. Things like design, colors, font, etc, will now be consistent for all Firefox products.

As a result of that, the browser Firefox is getting a new icon.
