Been looking into VVC, the next codec from the developers of MPEG (makers of H.254/AVC and H.265/HEVC) and they have made some pretty bold claims such as already having a 23% bit rate advantage at the same PSNR as HEVC.

The really impressive part is that they claim to achieve this with decoding only being ~25% slower, and encoding "only" about 400% slower (for comparison, the reference AV1 encoder is like 20 times slower than HEVC)

 

The sad thing is that if VVC becomes really good, it might be hard for AV1 to get any major footing, which would result in we once again being stuck with horrible, licensed and patented messes of codecs.

    Something tells me that VVC won't stand a chance if it's too difficult for browser developers to work with (fees and the rest)...
