Yeah he's kind of a fanboy. Not going for 1080p or higher on a top end phone has no excuse in 2018.

if I understand correctly the whole point of a Retina display is that there's no point with going higher in terms of pixel density. it just wastes battery life and cpu/gpu power.

Depends on the size of the display as well. 720p on a 5" or smaller phone will look a lot better than 720p on a 6"+ phone.

@firelighter487 The retina display terminology is more of a marketing strategy than an actual thing. It just means that the pixel density of those displays are such that you can't distinguish between pixels when within a certain distance from the display.

@MEC-777...so there's no point going higher because you won't see the difference unless you old it right in front of your face.

I'd actually love to try the difference.

Like setting my phone to 720p and 1080p but for both using the "Retina" Viewing distance trying to distinguish them from each other.

The term "retina" is stupid though just because it uses a distance. You 480p 80" TV can be retina if you are 100m away. I sometimes use my phone at 50cm distance though and other times at 20cm and I want it to look good at both. Or for example when using your phone as an VR headset, a much higher resolution than "Retina" is necessary.
