IdeaStormer got a reaction from moba_ in Cleaning a cpu without Isopropyl Alcohol?
I ALWAYS clean my cpu's (that have thermal paste from a previous installation) with just a rough paper towel, no extra anything. If you can't get it clean with just a paper towel then you're doing something majorly wrong as in applying way too much thermal paste and now its just a freaking mess. If there is thermal glue (crusty stuff) I use a razor blade and shave the crusties off, then paper towel it clean, shave as in a very new sharp blade and angle it so no metal is shaved off.

Yes, Software RAID can but all this talk of SPoF and you throw in the "Intel chipset (with 4 ports available), and ASMedia chipset (with 4 ports), and an LSI 9211-4i" as a viable set of controllers to mix <insert mother of ghod meme>   , that's sure is reducing the SPoF but adding a cluster @#$@ of controllers that most likely will belly up any RAID array. Good in theory but in reality I'd run away from that system faster than a Over Clocked Liquid Nitrogen cooled CPU.

Best to keep any discussion on SPoF back with trusty, tested, and known controllers and drives, if not just Controller X. The LSI I'd keep in the mix but maybe two of them and then maybe look for others depending on budget, but for FreeNAS, FlexRAID basically ZFS an HBA is best.

There might be a RAID controller out there that can do the spanning but probably has to have equal brother controllers in the span, and for a nice price.

The Theory is good (@wpirobotbuilder), but I think most on LTT need to see it converted to more examples as most are just getting the feel for RAID on its own. One good add on would be an example build so they can see it lay-ed out in terms of actual components. Just a suggestion, not an arm twist.

    IdeaStormer got a reaction from 1337synidcate in How do I Raid 0 my 2 120GB SSD's with a M5A99FX Pro R2.0 MoBo?
Plug your SSD's SATA cables to the two middle (white) SATA ports on the motherboard, I'd put the HDD on the bottom outside white port, any Optical drive I'd stick in the Blue ports or the last White port.

Power on the computer and hit F2 to enter BIOS. In BIOS look for the SATA Controller settings and set it to RAID (RTFM for details), enable  swap if the box is there. Exit BIOS, system will reboot, wait for the SATA RAID BIOS to pop up have your hands on the Control and I key ready and when you see the prompt press down on those keys, if you miss it just hit the reset button and try again. You will enter the RAID settings BIOS if you hit the Control and I key at the right time, set the RAID to RAID 0 and pick the two SSD's to be in the RAID group, do nothing to the HDD or any optical drives, just leave them as is.

Insert your OS install CD/DVD/Memory Stick and boot up and install OS, you may need to download the SATA RAID drivers for your mobo if the installer does not see the RAID array (should see a 240 or so sized disk which is the two SSD's in RAID 0).

Proceed as usual for the rest just make sure to install the RAID software so you can peek at the RAID array without having to go to BIOS.

Good luck and if you eff it up the first time you can try again and again till you get it right or get the hang of it so you end up becoming a RAID BOSS!

PS: Oh wait its an AMD board, maybe its not Control I but something else just watch the BIOS screen closely.

IdeaStormer got a reaction from Adi234 in What Linux distribution do you suggest for daily use?
Just get Debian and install all these window managers so you get all the listed supposed distros:

    Xfce4
    FluxBox
    Gnome
    GnomeClassic
    KDE
    ICEwm

and if you want something super lame so you know how things have progressed

    FVWM2 or TWM

The underlying OS is the freaking same, but the window manager is all that basically differentiates them.

Great write up @alpenwasser. concise and down to earth even though @looney thought it might of been long, beats having a newbie read the whole zfs doc :p

    Some add ons are:

    * Performance is also dependent on how many systems are accessing the Zpool(s), whether it be NFS, CIFS or direct. This is where more bandwidth (1 Gig card or more, or a 10 Gig card) help and a beefier CPU.
    * Many people on here (LTT) probably will use it in a small environment and not see many of the gut wrenching bad things due to heavy users adding/removing a ton of files both small and large which affect things like snapshots, dedupe and other features.

IdeaStormer got a reaction from asim1999 in Your School Suspension(Or close to suspension) Stories
Not that it was my only suspension but a good one. We had a regular dick substitute for this one class, the moment we (I) saw him I was already sighing and mumbling if not cursing him under my breath. He starts going off on some lame assignment which had nothing to do with the class this was about so I raise my hand and inform said sub that we had to get this and that done for an upcoming exam. Well he could care less and went off on how he's in charge and his assignment is to be done! Well I retorted and gain an instant detention slip, I tried to inform him how important this exam was, I didn't get half way in when he gave me a second detention slip which I refused to pick up and continued on with my explanation of the exam deadline. "Too the Principals office!" was his reply, so I thought sure I'll go let the principal know how F-ed up this is, its not like I'm a trouble maker but quite the opposite on the student body and a top student, so off I go as quickly as I could. Well I barely got out of my seat when the next student started up with the same thing I was saying and of course another detention slip for him, I slowed down on my exit to see what was going to transpire, a third student stood up with the same concerns, a third detention, I'm holding the door open at this point to see what's going to happen. The teacher soon sends student 2 and 3 to the principal's office as well. The rest of the class knowing well that this sub is being a jerk not listening to us then en-mass get up and follow me the the other two to the principal's office. The sub's face soon changed from his smug I'm in charge and king of the class to "WTF did I just do?" look, again this was an academic oriented class not some sit and wait till the next period type class.

We all end up at the principal's office all clamoring about our exams and the fact that this jerk sub is f-ing things up. The principal takes a look at us and of course see's the students he's not used to seeing come to his office for bad things so knows something is up. He calmly quiets us up to find out whats going on and within a few minutes after his secretary mumbles to him who was assigned our class after our teacher reported in sick he understood what was up. He walks us all back to the class and there is the sub sitting all alone at the front of the class, he asks us to all sit down, the sub starts up with how we (the three) have detention if not suspension do to our supposed improper outbreaks and not listening to him. The principal asks the sub to step outside with him as we all sit down. We can see him talking to him outside the class as there are windows out by the door. The sub soon walks away and the principal returns and asks, "OK, so what do you want/need to do for this exam and how can I help in your teachers absence?". We basically start studying and getting back to business. We never saw said jerk sub again.

Do the classic resetting of everything (power off/on the WiFi access point and your device). That is a common fix for weak/weird wifi issues. If that doesn't do it you'll have to determine if its just your device or something else. Maybe the WiFi router has some issue, if other devices are connecting fine then its your PC. Maybe someone/something is doing something to weaken the signal at certain times, not on purpose but just what ever they're doing is interfering, maybe something you're doing.

If you have a smartphone install the app named, WiFi Analyzer, you can use it to see where the signal is strong/weak and what the best channel your wifi router should be on for best performance, maybe another router's signal is conflicting/overlapping causing the disconnect. Pretty cool tool actually, there are others as well but this one is rather simple and quick to the answer.

You don't really recover RAID0 at all. You just create the array anew (by replacing defective hardware if needed) and then restore the backup you've (hopefully) made. Not much more work than with any single drive.

If you're spending $7.5K on a computer and you main concern is boot time, you are either spending way too much money to fix a problem you never will or are not using it for real work as you state. If you are using it for real work the chances you actually shut it down are never.

What you are taking about is a workstation class computer and as has been my experience those computer are never shut down unless there's a power outage. They are up and running 24/7 to do work, even work initiated remotely even if you are not in front of it. If you plan on turning a workstation class computer down regularly you are in for some surprises.

@ArtVenom, which ports are you using for both RAID arrays? I know from experience the Non-Intel ports can cause issues (bluescreens, RAID resyncs, crashes).

The drivers for the second SATA controller (forget the name at the moment) usually is the cause of the issue, and I've yet to see a fix, not sure if its the mixed RAID levels or particular drives but it does exist, I disabled the second SATA controller and no more RAID resyncs or crashes.

IdeaStormer got a reaction from Columbo in Is the performance benefit of Raid 0 worth the risk?
And RAID is super mature, stable, and solid, that's why almost all mobo vendor's include it as default, be it RAID 0, RAID 1, etc. Back in the day you had to pay extra for it because it was costly and well a benefit they were or wanted to charge you for, the chipsets have it included now due to the advances in tech and its included by almost default now.

Of course if you're the type to pull the power plug from your computer as a joke then RAID is not for you. If you shutdown properly and safely as most computer users do you'll be fine, if you don't you'll also screw up a non-RAID drive, eventually.

A LTT video about forum questions is like having a TV news show reading the newspaper which as you know is already old news. In this case the LTT video will be outdated as the forum moves much faster than creating such a video, whereas the newspaper gets old the moment its printed as on line news gets updated as fast as the forum if not faster.

So please lets not confuse the different media platforms and try to incorporate them into each other. Its like printing a movie you downloaded to your new fancy printer, totally pointless, unless you like to waste paper, ink and the printer.

Well you can easily prove it to yourself by at least feel, check air flow on you face with the filter, then remove the filter, same, more, less you be the judge.

Of course they do, but the option is not to and let the dust accumulate en mass!
