Out of those 2 I would go for the HP just because it has 16GB RAM, providing a little more longevity.

Lost of good Lenovo laptops around that price point.

The Ryzen CPU in this one is way better than either of the machines you listed, and probably better than anything else in it's price point.

Yup it should work just fine, if one module has slower speed than the other. The default speed will be the slower module. The performance difference will be little to none, maybe in a benchmark but real world performance should see nothing.

No the P52 will still have 64GB, it has 128GB right now. Yup it's got the P3200, I don't think I've ever actually tasked the GPU other than some folding this laptop has just been a mobile testing lab.

I've used all of these machines, and or currently all of these machines. Sad thing is we can't really configure them as the DoD/DHA sends us like low spec, along with a stupid life cycle policy.

I have a Powermac G5 coupled with an XServe RAID. The G5 has a couple fibre channel cards for connection to the XServe and is running OSX 10.5 Server. The XServe has 14 x 500gb PATA drives. For 7 TB's of pre-raid storage it was really cheap when I got it.
Essentially its some old tech I picked up several years ago to play around with. I do not run it regularly as with redundant PSU's, Fans, etc, its very noisy and very power hungry. But I use it as a data dump location when I need to format one of my machines.

So far I have a Dell Precision T3500 with a Xeon W3520, 12GB of ram and just a couple old hard drives.  I currently don't need much storage space on it but will put in a couple bigger drives at some point.  The CPU will be replaced with a x5680 once I have time to swap it (it arrived a couple days ago).
Right now it has ESXI and it's running a single Ubuntu Server vm for a Minecraft Bedrock server for my kids.  Still deciding on what game server to do next, maybe classic Doom...

I also have a fx 8350 rig that I manual duel boot between Windows 10 and Unraid.  I mostly use Unraid on it to spin up Linux VMs with full gpu passthrough.

I5's are plenty powerful for most tasks, if your going to be doing anything other than web design you might want a quad core.

Gung Pow Chicken got a reaction from Lurick in What does your company offer as a work computer?
Personally if available I would definitely get the P53 lol Hopefully they will actually use a decent heatsink. I've had 3 P52's now. My Xeon P52 surprisingly doesn't suffer from the same thermal throttling as my other 2. My P52 with the 8850h was sadly destroyed in a car accident, and the other drivers insurance company kinda screwed me on liability so I ended up getting a stock config with 8750h.

I have it configured with 4 drives, which is one of the nice things about the P Series, 64GB RAM with my Xeon having 128GB. I've done some undervolting with the 8750h and put a stop to the thermal throttling and improved the performance a bit.

Don't get me wrong the P52 is still one hell of a machine, plus you no longer need to spend $2000+ for 128GB RAM like I did when it first came out lol

Gung Pow Chicken reacted to ItsTobes in Do you think 15" business laptops need more than 1080p res
At 15" 1440p is overkill, unless you specifically require high PPI for photo editing or any kind of digital creativity. 1080p won't really start to look pixelated until you're going beyond 20". You've also got added battery consumption if you're driving a high res display to consider. I have a 24" 1440p display myself and can tell you that anything smaller would really be pointless, the pixel density is already very crisp at this size.

Personally (and this is just my experience), I haven't met many people, even working in IT, that are fully aware of the difference between 1080p and 1440p. If you started handing out 1440p laptops to staff, I'd bet that 99% of them wouldn't even recognise the improvement, especially on a screen that size. Would be a waste of money in my opinion. Use the extra cost on making sure staff have SSDs or something, they'll notice much more improvement with that.

1080p is fine. Going 1440p would likely require UI scaling which can have mixed results.

I mean, I never said I liked it, but I would support the decision, considering that they are writing documents and programming. But it's subjective, and so I respect your opinion.

Unlock bootloader, and install a custom ROM would be my best bet. I still use a G4 as my company phone and don't have any issues. I use CypherOS, but don't play games or anything.

You will not!  They have strict guidelines and there isn't any "play" in them either. Definitely one of more frustrating things about working in IT for the government.
