  1. Alright, let's say I overclock the snot out of the 920 and it can hold me over until I've got some somewhat decent PC funds. Would it be better to get something like this Xeon that looks exactly like an i7 980X, or to jump platforms to a cheap AMD?
  2. Hello all, I have recently "acquired" a free Foxconn Bloodrage GTI Motherboard with an i7 920 installed with it. "Acquired" is in quotes because this hardware was given to me on the basis that I would give it back if I no longer need it, ergo no selling things. I am planning on using this hardware in a gaming rig, but the 920 was a little less powerful than I'd like, so I decided I'd look around for options and I found some incredibly cheap Xeons... Then I saw this, which is nice. I heard some guys have ran xeons with this mobo, they just update the bios before dropping it in. People seem to think that this particular Xeon is at least comparable to the i7 950, and something also of note is that I have a liquid cooler already; single 120 closed loop. I know it'd be an upgrade in performance, but what I'm not sure about is if it'd be $50 worth of performance. The rest of my rig in up in the air currently, aside from my GPU which is a GTX 480. RAM is mixed and matched totaling 5GB and power supply is getting replaced. No SSD. What do you guys think?
  3. Thank you both for your input! I suppose, yes, it would be pretty silly of me to try and salvage these $15 speakers. I still am curious however as to whether or not this would work. I would also like to point out that my current speakers are not powered by the sub but in fact are powered by the right-hand speaker.
  4. Let it be said first of all that I have zero experience with proper audio equipment, so if I'm over here having fairy tale dreams please tell me. With that out of the way I will present to you my situation. Currently, I have an Altec Lansing 2.1 BX1221 speaker system, with an amazing (sarcasm) 5 watt subwoofer connected to the two other speakers via 3.5mm, in a medium sized room, with the system connected to the onboard audio of my desktop. Basically what I'm looking for is plentiful bass suitable for gaming and music, for as far under $150 as possible (Also, I am by no means an audiophile type; more bass=better hands down for me). I have heard of people using the speakers that I have in addition to a different subwoofer for better bass. So here's my inexperienced thought: What if I picked up a decent powered sub (Such as the Polk Audio PSW10) and a 3.5mm to RCA; put the 3.5mm to rca adapter where the altec sub is normally plugged in, and connected the rca to the powered sub? Would this.. work? Would I be better off plugging the adapter directly into my desktop via splitter? Would it be simpler to just get an amp for the sub? And finally: what's this "subwoofer cable" stuff?
