  1. The Yeti Pro should have come with a splitter cable to adapt the 5-pin XLR to two 3-pin connections. Here's a link to a similar cable. I'm not sure if the pinout of this cable matches the Yeti, but it should be easy to resolder. (probably best to find a spare splitter cable from Blue though) According to the Yeti Manual you'll need an external preamp with phantom power to use the XLR connection. So you can use the Blue Icicle mentioned above if you just need mono, and use something like this if you need two channels. Depending on your application, you may not want to skimp on a preamp, although I imagine the Icicle will be very close to the sound you're used to.
  2. USB MIDI interfaces like the M-Audio Uno or the Yamaha UX16 work great. I've never used a gameport adapter but it should work fine. Finding MIDI hardware is much more difficult than it used to be. Most contemporary music interfaces (keyboards, drum pads) send their Midi data over USB connectors. Actually using MIDI connectors is mostly for live performance and non-music applications nowadays. So to answer your question, an alternate solution may be using a USB keyboard instead of MIDI connectors. I currently only use USB keyboards, but I keep a Yamaha UX16 around for special projects. You asked if it's worth the money- That depends on what music hardware he wants to plug in and what kind of mucking about we're talking about. If he just wants to program some electronic music, he could just use his mouse to draw MIDI notes into his DAW. If he is intending on buying a little keyboard, I say skip the MIDI connectors altogether. Maybe you can tell us more about what gear he needs to plug in? If he's a musician, is he buying an audio interface w/XLR inputs? (those often come with onboard MIDI)
  3. IF... if the system is having trouble keeping up with audio playback, turning up the buffer/latency would give it a little longer to cue up and play the sounds. The popping/cracking is similar to the noise heard when you make a bad audio edit in Final Cut/Premiere/etc. A bad edit popping sound happens when you edit a sound file to playback starting from a non-zero point in the waveform. So, maybe (not PROBABLY, just maybe) if the system can't playback audio fast enough, the first few samples of the files are being skipped, and the sound begins playing from a non-zero point. I would try cranking that latency setting up a little higher, but your machine really shouldn't need a huge latency/buffer for the game. I think we're still looking for another root cause. IHTH
  4. Bumping this. Maybe we can give this one a happy ending...
  5. This controller/Kinect interaction probably only works with the new controllers. It reminds me of when we first got analog sticks on the Playstation. Some gameplay relied on the analog sticks and just didn’t work without the new controller. I would hope that their official statement would be something like “Wired legacy controllers will work with some games, but players will need Xbox One accessories to get the best gameplay experience.” But no, they just bricked the 360 controllers. Edit:Still works on PC though!
  6. Shh!!! We can't have that in the sticky! They can't know our secrets
  7. cool resource. thanks man! Some small changes caught my eye: Under connectors, the 3.5mm/ 1/8th connector is not the same as an RCA connector. RCA connectors are the kind commonly used for component/composite A/V connections (the old yellow-red-white connectors). They're also used for consumer S/PDIF over coax which is a digital connection and could be confusing. (On that note, you might consider adding a section about TOSLINK/optical, but I'm not sure how many people use it) the 1/4" section looks pretty good, but for the sake of any musicians in the audience, I would add that these are often called TRS connectors. and the xiph.org links are 404 for me. Thanks again for compiling this. I think it will be a helpful sticky.
  8. You're right on. Found an upload on At 20:35, he talks about the "Xbox One Architechture - 3 operating systems in one" just like you said. Guess it's time for me to burn down Microsoft. Huge missed opportunity. But it looked great in my head:)
  9. I don't know what you mean by published exactly, but they sure have a marketplace for them. The packaging is branded Games for Windows Live, but if you buy a game for Windows 8, it's already sold under the Xbox brand. And you're totally right, they wouldn't do it to be nice. But they love taking people's money. :)
  10. Well then I’m going to break the silence I promised you earlier.. The presentation of games today really felt like it missed the mark. Sports, Call of Duty and the wild card “Quantum” title. I think my greater Xbox theory may be wrong because this launch seemed targeted squarely at “people who don’t know any better.” I thought the concept of customizable feedback in the controller buttons is cute, but where is the meat for the enthusiast? The enthusiast knows this is basically a crippled HTPC, and most of the “features” are only incremental to what the 360 already had. Microsoft knows EA is in hot water with serious gamers right now, so having the EA rep in the presentation confirmed for me that they’re going for a more casual market. I really think this box is targeted at bro’s. I’m really hoping for a “one last thing” moment at E3.
  11. it could be revolutionary if they wanted http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/18575-why-the-xbox-one-could-be-awesome-and-you-guys-need-to-calm-down/#entry216904
  12. Dude, I don't think you gave my post a chance. I'm not saying Windows 8 is great, and I'm definitely not saying touchscreen TV's are great. I'm saying the potential of Xbox games running natively on your PC is great. I'd love for you to read just a little more of my post and give me your feedback on what I'm actually putting forth. FWIW, I don't intend on getting Windows 8 or an Xbox for the forseeable future. I just think the move could have a substantial impact.
  13. Hmm can't find a link to the archived video... I remember hearing something like "3 parts" or "3 systems" But is running 3 Operating Systems effective? I figured that any other systems/engines/services sat on top of Windows
