  1. I've shamed my family I'm sorry. Sorry I should clear some things up. I saw 3 main things: Ram - Yes I do need 32 GB I run virtual machines all day. Video card - I'm going to be getting a better video card shortly. I do not want to include that in this purchase. Silence - is not at all what I was looking for. I think air flow is more important than pure silent I don't mine being able to hear the fans when I'm actually using the computer the problem is that my current build is sitting with the fans always at 100%. This causes a problem when even if I'm just watching Netflix I can hear the fans rather loudly and that is the issue that I am trying to resolve. So as far as changing the build. I see two cases that look good options at a lower price point: Fractal Design Define XL R2 - I would be a little bit worried about air flow but I'm not sure if it would be an issue Corsair Obsidian Series 750D Airflow Edition - looks really good to me. 2. I'm looking to put together a new build and would love some advice! Budget: I'm pretty flexible. I'd say max is 2K USD. Purpose: There's two main things I'll be doing with this build: Gaming - pretty much everything Software Development - a lot of the code I work with is parallel and most of the tools I use are heavily multi-threaded (lots of ram lots of cores hence the 5820K rather than a new skylake) Side Quests: Currently I'm rocking an Antec 1200 and because all of the fans are controlled by little knobs or switches I tend to leave them at max all the time. This is a little bit loud and annoying sometimes. I used to try to turn them down but I would forget to turn the fans back up to full power whenever I would start gaming or working and things would get a little bit hot so I just leave them on all the time. I would like to get some fans that do a REALLY good job of keeping everything cool but that also work on a fan curve so that if the system is not really doing anything they will turn down to be very quiet. I really do need something that can keep the system cool under load as there are times when it's going to be sitting at max crunching stuff for hours. I really have no idea how to best manage fans these days if I need a fan controller or if I could do it entirely through a motherboard. I don't think I would gain a lot by going to up the 5930X or 5960X CPU Cooler - I want it to run on air. Open to suggestions here though. Motherboard - Asus has a good reputation (as far as I know) Memory- I think G Skill is still good? I'm pretty flexible here. Storage - all stuff I already have laying around. Video Card - See storage. I am not immediately interested in getting a new video card. I will be shortly after this build. I know that the 760 is getting old but for now it works fine. Case - I an very open to suggestions here. Power Supply - High rated gold psu. Open to change. Things to add: Fans - I was thinking something by Noctua or Corsaire as both have good products. Fan Controller - maybe? TLDR: advice about fans and general critique Note I'm not looking for a system that is silent but rather a system where the fans do not run at 100% all of the time. Thanks all!!
  3. Totally forgot about the Fractal Design Define XL R2! It's really temping my only concern would be air flow. I know you can pin the front door open but I still wonder if the air flow is more restricted than an Antec 900/1200? I would love an Antec DF-85 but I thought they discontinued them? Everywhere I looked is out of stock at this point. I was strongly considering this. So right now I'm really thinking about the Antec 1200 or the Fractal Design Define XL R2. Unless they still make the Antec DF-85. Anyone know anything about the air flow of the Fractal Design Define XL R2 vs Antec 1200? Silence is not an issue for me. In fact I love the sound of fans. Thank you everyone for the input so far. I'm still open to other suggestions if anyone has any.
  4. I have an Antect 900 right now and it seems a bit small for me. Maybe I'm just terrible at cable management but I have an Asus M5A99X and I feel like there's not enough room between the motherboard and where the hard drive cages are. I have some trouble plugging the SATA cables in since the space is tight. This makes it seem like the case is not long enough. However the real reason I'm looking to get a new case is because I want to get another video care and I don't see any way to put two video cards in my case right now. I currently have an EVGA GTX 550ti and it doesn't look like there's enough space between the power supply and my 550 for another video card. I might be able to cram one in but I feel like that would just kill the airflow for everything. There'd be no air for the video cards or the power supply. I feel like I need a case that's taller as well. One of the biggest issues for me when I was trying to do cable management was the positioning of the SATA ports on my motherboard and the lower hole for cable management in the case. If I try to run cables through that hole then I can't get past the cables to plug my hard drives in. TL;DR I think I want a bigger case. I feel like I'm really out of it when it comes to cases. So here's what I'm looking for in a case hopefully some people can give me some recommendations. Lots of hard drive bays with plenty of room between hard drive bays and motherboard (I think I'm going to turn this build in to a file server in about a year) Dust filters would be nice Great air cooling (I really don't see this as EVER being water cooled) Taller than Antec 900 ....has to support ATX motherboards? Ya I'm out of ideas. As far as price range I really don't care that much. I wouldn't mind getting something like a Corsair 900D or Antec 1900 if it ever comes out. I just think those would overkill. Maybe not? I was really looking at getting an Antec 1200 but just looking at the dimensions it doesn't sound that much bigger than the Antec 900. If someone has had both maybe I'm wrong? I don't know cases are hard Suggestions? Thoughts?
  5. If you're interested in a good book I would say one of the better books (best imo) on JavaScript is Secrets of the JavaScript Ninja It's a bit on the advanced side of things but it's a really good book if you really want to understand how JavaScript works. If you're just interested in using jquery to move some elements around or want a quick way to add some interesting animations to a website then this is not really a good book at all. It's really about learning JavaScript and not about using a single library such as jquery, backbone, or underscore.
  6. In response to this I would like to make a confession. I really like the gimmicky 7.1 surround sound of the g930s. Thus I would prefer something with gimmicky 7.1 over something with real quality sound. I would also prefer a combined solution so that I don't have to bother carrying around two things. I know I'm lazy.
  7. I love anything by JetBrains. I tend to use their intellij Idea ide a lot since I do most of my work in Java, Groovy, Grails, C++.
  8. I currently have a pair of Logitech G930 headphones. They sound great to me and are very conformable. The only small complaint I have is that they are a bit tight that being said I can wear them for 12 hours without issue. The problem is when I take them to work they tend to disconnect roughly once per hour. I'm going to assume this is because I work in an environment with hundreds of people with laptops, phones, and tablets all connecting to tons of access points. They work fine for me at home so I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the environment at work. I'm looking for something that sounds like the G930s and feels like them. I even really like the 7.1 simulation/software/whatever it is. They have to have a mic. The software from Screaming Bee was cool and fun but not required. They sadly will have to be wired but I don't care if they're analog or USB. As a comparison I really don't like the way the Razer Tiamat 7.1 sound. Don't really have any other headphone experience to list. If Logitech makes something like the G930s that are wired with the same software that would be amazing! Otherwise I'm open to suggestions. :) For the price range I would say something less than $200.
