True. Either way I find it hard to care. Every other device in your house already does everything so having one device that only does one thing isn't the end of the world. The idea that consoles must also be media-hubs belongs back in 2000-2010. Back when the Playstation was a Trojan horse for new disc formats and the 360 was the cheapest way to get HD content on your TV. These days you have a phone in your pocket, a chromecast in your TV and a BluRay player under it.

Don't get me wrong, the Switch would make a nice little device for watching Netflix. It's just that for me and probably most people it's only valuable in the same way that the "take a photo" mode on a car dashcam is valuable. If for some reason it's the only device you have with you at that point that does it? Then sure, it becomes useful. But most of the time you're going to have access to something else that does a better job.

When these third parties release apps. NicoNico already has an app so the idea that Nintendo are blocking these is a bit illinformed....

skywake got a reaction from Mira Yurizaki in Xbox One X Equivalent HTPC Build (2018)
This isn't what a HTPC is. A HTPC is specifically a PC that slides into an AV rack, is connected to a TV and is controlled from a comfortable viewing position. Really if you want to get into the specifics of the term it's something that was at its peak in the early to mid 2000s. Microsoft was the one pushing the idea the hardest and the original XBox was seen as part of that push. It was never about productivity, it was always purely a Home Theatre PC not a home office PC.

Once you start talking productivity of course a PC wins hands down. But at that point we're not talking HTPCs anymore.....

At around that price point I'd look at getting two devices for those uses. A chromecast will do a good enough job for most of your media stuff and you can get them for ~$50AU. Then for streaming your games I'd go with a Steam Link. If you can find a good deal on both you should be able to get them at ~$100AU in total. Because to be honest those little Android TV boxes are more trouble than they're worth.

And the other suggestions in the thread about going for an Apple TV or Raspberry Pi aren't very good IMO. A Raspberry Pi isn't really a good option for streaming games over your network so that's half of your use cases dead. And an Apple TV costs quite a bit more than $100AU. Really if you were happy to spend as much as you would to get an Apple TV I'd recommend getting an XBOne S for about the same.

just an idea, but if your thinking of running cable anyways to different parts of your house, why not run cat6 and plug it into a couple wifi access points.

Well that but also what you're doing on the network. If you're copying a multi GB file to a NAS then you'll notice a difference even if you have the best Wi-Fi signal and gear. But if you're just browsing the internet? Your Wi-Fi probably won't be the bottleneck and even if it was you'd likely not notice

If we're being a bit pedantic here technically the category of the cable is really just a measure of the cable quality. You could in theory push 10Gbps through Cat5 if the cable was short enough and you could fail to link at 1Gbps if your Cat7 cable was too long or a bit dodgy. The hardware itself really doesn't care what cable you use as long as the signal can get through.

All of the official cable requirements? They list a cable length as well as the category of cable. None of them mention Cat7, the list is as follows:

    100Mbps - Cat5 @ 100m
    1Gbps - Cat5e @ 100m
    2.5Gbps - Cat5e @ 100m
    5Gbps - Cat6 @ 100m, Cat5e in "most use cases"
    10Gbps - Cat 6A @ 100m, Cat6 @ 55m
    25Gbps - Cat8 @ 30m
    40Gbps - Cat 8 @ 30m

Cartridges aren't using the same kind of flash that you find in an SSD or even a SD card. It's read only memory and it's therefore cheaper so that equation doesn't necessarily add up. And in any case, if NAND flash gets to the point where it's so cheap you can replace the HDD with an SSD? We better still not be using discs also. Optical media is far closer to death by cheaper cartridges than the HDD is from cheaper SSDs.
Australia. Economically about on par with Canada in terms of cost of living, income etc but with half the average internet speed. We're most definitely buying 4K TVs and then streaming sub-HD Netflix to it.
Yeah, we'll just take our business to that other service which is also running past our houses. Oh wait, I forgot, most people only have one service option available to them. It's almost like telecommunications infrastructure is a natural monopoly like water, gas, power, sewage, roads. Voting with your wallet doesn't work when there's only one option on the ballot.

They're selling a game with some plans on how to build some boxes with reflective tape, rubber bands and string so that you can interact with it via the IR camera, motion sensors and rumble of the Joycon in specific ways. If anything the fact that they're doing it with cardboard is kinda genious. If it was made out of some other material like plastic you're telling consumers that if it breaks it's dead unless you have a 3D printer or something. Made of cardboard? Who cares if you brake it. Make another one, get some tape. Who cares because it's just cardboard!

Or they're going to get a whole bunch of savvy parents buying this for their kids for 1/5th of the price of something like Lego Mindstorms. As a game it's probably a bit average and a bit over priced. As a toy it's cheap and made of cardboard. As an built it yourself "edutainment" interactive toy? It's actually a pretty good deal compared to the competition.

And you'd probably rave about it if it was on kickstarter. I do love the Switch, I'll admit it. Easily my favourite gadget I have currently. But I was also one of the few voices raving about the NVidia Shield and the idea of playing "AAA games" on a portable device. I'm one of the people who has been wanting a portable PC in a Switch like form factor that doesn't suck for years just so I could do something like that. The Switch delivers on that promise more than anyone else has.

So yes, when Nintendo does papercraft style thing with a gadget/tech twist on it? I'm all over it. It's a fantastic idea. In the same way that I've thought largely the same things about every other small company who tried the same. Nintendo is nuts to do it on a grand scale and they get flack for it. But just because you don't get it doesn't mean it's only getting praise because mindless Nintendo zombies will love everything.

So.... I'm not going to be able to compete with the OP. All of this gear is off the shelf and excluding cabling the network itself (i.e. routers, APs, switches etc) is only ~$500 worth of gear. Maybe a bit more, I don't exactly keep track. Anyways, here's mine. I'm pretty happy with it and I thought this thread needed something a bit simpler

A bit of a guide to reading it....
    - Each box is a separate room
    - Solid lines are Ethernet, fine dotted lines are powerline and dashed lines are wireless
    - The thickest solid lines are 1Gbps links, the other lines are 100Mbps
    - NAS is a consumer grade 2 bay NAS, the two Sonos speakers are Play 1s
    - 8Mbps Internet..... because Australia

Yup, sure does. It's a shame you can only really order from the services that are available. Short of using 4G and paying through the nose for data, paying double for a second line and a load balancing router or moving to an area with FTTH about 20km away I'm kinda stuck with it.

skywake got a reaction from Donut417 in What Is Mesh Wifi?
None of the explanations here have been particularly good so let me set the record straight a bit. All mesh means is that the nodes of the network can connect to multiple other nodes. It doesn't necessarily mean that they are connected, it just means that they can be. So when one link goes down or is slow a node can fall back on another path back to the root node. For WiFi the advantage is that every node you add improves the coverage of your network. If you have poor coverage in one area? Add another node. The issue is that the bandwidth is shared so adding nodes will tend to reduce the possible bandwidth.

To put it even simpler..... a mesh node is a range extender with better marketing.

"The Switch like mentioned a ton already has no media functions like YouTube or Netflix"
It's worth noting that the 3DS and PS4 were slower to get various media applications than the Vita and Wii U were. So having a lot of media apps quickly isn't quite as important as some people seem to think. It's not 1999 anymore where the PS2 having a DVD player was a massive selling point. Not having Netflix on the Switch just means that when I sit down on the couch at the end of the day I have 5 rather than 6 ways to watch Netflix. No doubt it'd be a nice Netflix watching device but it's hardly the end of the world.

"I don't know why Nintendo expects the Switch to be a portable tablet that you can only play games on"
Because mobile games and console/PC games are not in the same league. We all know this. The Switch is the best device on the market for playing traditional console style games on the go. Sure I have a phone in my pocket that can play games AND to movies but maybe I want to play Zelda or Skyrim in bed. What other device lets me do that as easily as the Switch does?

"Before they even think of charging people to play online they really need to straighten some things out"
Which is probably why they're not charging for it yet. I think it's probably fair if we reserve judgement on the service until we actually have some idea what they're actually going to ask us to pay for. Especially given they're charging half as much as their competitors.

"Also, it does not seem to be as straightforward communicating directly through the tablet"
Fair point. It does seem a bit complicated the way they have online communication setup. They have to use an app on your phone rather than having that functionality built into the device. Personally I don't really care because I always end up muting everyone anyways but still, good point.

skywake got a reaction from GoodBytes in Is the Nintendo switch worth it?
Well you are right to think that if that's why you brought the Switch. If you are buying the Switch just for versions of games you already had on Wii U it's not that compelling. Not in terms of the software you're buying for it if that's the software you're buying. But I think given that outside of the Virtual Boy the Wii U was Nintendo's worst performing console it's fair to assume that someone asking about the Switch didn't have a Wii U. Also most people buy at least a few games they don't already have on their new consoles.

For me personally I brought both the Wii U and Switch at launch. I guess that makes me super biased about Nintendo stuff. Even so I didn't buy Breath of the Wild on Wii U because I got it on Switch. I haven't brought Splatoon 2 because I played the original to death and would rather spend my money on something new. I got Arms instead. I did however buy Mario Kart 8 again purely because Mario Kart is an essential multiplayer game on Nintendo consoles. Is it the exact same game? Pretty much. The only difference is that I now have it on a system that is portable.

Also what on earth are you getting at with that 2DS comment? If that's what you reduce the Switch to then I guess a GTX 1080 is just a 9600GT with a bigger heatsink. Between the 3DS and the Switch we're talking about a 100x jump in raw horsepower. As a portable system and in terms of raw horsepower the Switch is well ahead of what Nintendo or even Sony would usually release. In terms of the magnitude of the jump in raw horsepower 3DS/2DS to Switch is about equivalent to a jump from the original XBox to the PS4.

    To ram that point home:
    Mario Kart 7 on 3DS
    Mario Kart 8 on Switch
