  1. And comparing "reference" if noone in their right mind is buying said reference is considered useful because,...? I like to compare stuff that actually ends up in my rig. So i am looking for benchmarks of cards that are actually sold and not cards that are there for testing only. This includes: Real prices => not some "it should be" prices. Being OCed to the limit => RX480 for exampe barly overclocks at all, so AIB won't kill it either. GTX 1060 overclocks like a beast, so we can expect improvements over current benchmarks. Models that are actually interesting => Founders Cards look fancy and thats about it. They are sold for that price so AIB can actually sell cards at all. They need a reason to invest in better cooling solutions ect. If NVidia would sell a great solution at a great price,.. why would anyone spend money / time on improving it? Don't get me wrong here. Apart from the drama the RX480 had and the over the top marketing crap AMD likes to pull off,... the card is actually a great card. It just so happens that with german prices in mind the 1060 beats it hands down in every aspect but some single DX 12 games. Since i don't care about price / performance as much as i care about noice and heat i would have gone with an NVidia card anyways. This time around NVidia just happens to beat AMD even on the P/P front (in my country) /shrug.
  2. I love the apples to oranges comparisons. People AND THIS TIME EVEN LINUS, are comparing a RX 480 8gb at min price vs a GTX 1060 FE at max price. Uhm, yeah, i guess you could do that if you are into marketing. How about we look at real world prices tho? For one: I fail to find a RX 480 anywhere close to 249$ in germany. The cheapest i saw as of yesterday was sold for 289 Euro and dropped to 269 as of today. (I wonder why) Then i fail to see why anyone would buy a 1060 FE, if partner cards are cooler, faster AND less noisy while also being cheaper. So clearly comparing to the FE price is,.. not a really useful thing to do. A few differend models of the GTX 1060 sell for 279 Euro as of today. So the GTX 1060 is 5-25% faster, 10 wooping bugs more expensive, draws less power, is less noisy and heats up the room less. Leaving out all the fanboyism, those are the facts for germany as of today. Easy pick right there. Differences will vary from country to country, so check your own prices. And as sad as it makes me: Don't trust LTT review this time. They disclosed their partnership with AMD a while back and before even watching the video i was SURE to see an apples to oranges comparison. And sadly that is exactly what we got.
  3. Right now i am using an HP Elitxe X2. It is doing all i need, has an M core and is therefore dead silet. Performance is more then what i need ut to now. It is also leight, the akku lasts for about 6-10 hours which is fine. Big pro: The touchpad is as great as the one you pnly see on Mac Stuff. It really is THAT good... and it is just a type cover. Hoping i have found my shit now.
  4. The Yoga line does look pretty sexy. The X1 is pretty pricy for the specs tho and the Yoga 460 is "only" a great ultrabook. The 2:1 approach is very appealing for me since i am not only a student, but also a tutor for other students. My daily workflow is imrpoved if i have a tablet AND a laptop with me all the time. Also none of the Yogas is fanless and i have seen many reviews stating they go all nuts with the fans. The specs look nice on paper tho,...
  5. I am going to try this one next: http://store.hp.com/GermanyStore/Merch/Product.aspx?sel=NTB&id=L5H19EA&opt=ABD It is a german link, but you can read the specs anyways obviously. The US store does not have the Elite x2 version, but only the slightly older spectre X2. The Elite x2 has the newer USB 3.1 gen 2 c-type, finger print reader, slighly longer battery life... worse cameras (but why would i need a cam on that thing). Wonder why the german store ONLY has the elite x2 and the US store ONLY has the spectre x2. I don't mind getting the better version tho ;-) Hope this thing holds up to my expectations. It is total fanless, so 0db noise. I know it is slower then an i5 chip, but i don't need the power.
  6. Yes, that is a beauty. But a VERY loud beauty. Id love to have it, but i would not be able to open it in any lesson without annoying every person in the room. At least that is what most reviews suggest. :-(
  7. Hey there, been having a bad month of ordering "highend" stuff for 2kish bucks that all turned out to not be worth the money AT ALL. Needless to say i am getting a little pissed and it seems very hard to find the right product for me. No possible way of testing the hardware locally, we just don't have any stores that offer worthwhile hardware. Anyways, here is a list of must haves and nice to haves. Please help me out to find the right thing to buy. NEEDS to be silent. Used for university. I can not have the fans go all crazy if opening word or a pdf. NEEDS a silent trackpad. Again, can not have a trackpad that does do click sounds NEEDS to have windows on it as i need a full version of Visual Studio and full access to my files. NEEDS to have at least 256gb SSD, 500gb would be better. NEEDS to have a physical keyboard, a type cover would be ok as well if the attached tablet meets all requirements. NEEDS to have 8+ hours of battery life. More obviously better. VERY NICE to have: A touchscreen, prefered with wacom tech for better pens Nice to have: No GPU. Yes, i don't need one. Id rather have less heat and more battery life. I can not stress the silent part enough. I don't need any crazy performance as i have a beast of a machine at home. What i need is a silent tool for university that i can also use to do the coding i have to do. It absoluty has to shut up in my lessons, even if i run visual studio and have a webpage open. What i tried up to now: MacBookAir, at least nailing all the needed requirements but Windows. I did use one for 3 years and i am quite unhappy about the OS and price for the package. Not being able to install needed Windows programs really kills it. Sadly it prooves to be very hard to find something similar that actually compares. Custom Ultrabook: They seem to always come with wobbly trackpads that drive me nuts and power management usually suck, so it turns loud fast. No luck after 5 differend tries. Surface Book: First unit had an issue with the fans. Replaced with a unit that did not turn the screen on. Did not want to wait another week to test out unit 3, so moved on. Currend ideas: Try a Surface Pro, it would fit all my points, at least on paper, i am afraid of that tiny thing going all loud on me as well tho. So much power in tablet that small? Anyone have experience with them? Some other big companys offer 2in1s in the 1.3-1.5k ish price range that look good on paper. But what product doesn't look good on paper,... Really needing a new machine soon. Lost for ideas and since i am a student i can't just order all. I have 2k to spend, but i have to wait for the money return if i get some crap again before i can order something else. I hope someone has some good experience with any product fitting my needs. I can't be the only student that wants to be digital all the time.
  8. If i wanted more work, id have plenty of job offers. I need stuff that improves my workflow and frees up time, not doing the opposite. Scanned notes can not be searched for example, so that would not really do anything but making my bag lighter by digitalizing all the stuff. Weight is not an issue tho. Time is.
  9. I am looking for a tablet for university use. Pretty much all it has to do is being able to write notes into pdf files, marking text ect. So i went ahead and placed a Galaxy Tab S2 into my shopping chart, then i started looking for a stylus. I was under the impression that every tablet and every stylus can do that, untill i actually tried to find a stylus for writing. It seems like Samsung does not sell any device like that at all. Even tho they seem to sell stylus pens in masses. All seem to be for outdated tablets no longer sold, or phones. From what i found out myself only the iPad pros and Surface tablets offer my desired functionality. Is that really it? I have to pay THAT much money to get what i thought was something very basic? What alternatives are there, or did i just not find the right pen for the galaxy tab s2? I really don't want to spend 500-700 bucks just to take notes digitally.
  10. I can't help myself,... lol america. So many real issues around the world and you guys choose a butt to get mad about haha. But hey, who cares about all the people that the same women kills on a daily basis. She needs to be covered up while doing so! Noone may see that she has a butt like every other person on the planet.
  11. "Our iPad Pro is so powerful it is the perfect PC replacement! It almost has half a teraflop. That is as much as a XBOX 360!" Holy crap. Apple used to be so great and now they seem to test how far they can go. As fast as a xbox 360? Perfect Pc replacement? what the actual fuck. Who would even,... no.
  12. You are right actually. I did not know that. Looked up a comparison and finally know why the Occulus looked so god damn awful when i tried it. Here is the link i found discussing the resolutions. https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/3yta3g/why_do_people_keep_saying_the_gear_vr_has_low/ VERY disheartening for the PSVR. Since i already hated occulus,... and that one has a higher resolution. Did not try the Vive myself tho. That again is just some marketing crap untill they proove it. From what i saw they plan on injecting filler frames. And we all know how good that works on upscaled pictures. They claim to pull some serious magic here and honestly it would'nt be the first time a console company straight out lied to get some sales going. Not getting my hopes up just yet :-)
  13. You are missing two very important points there: it is 60fps TWICE, you need two screens for VR, not one. So if a game barly hits 60fps, that is about half the minimum for PSVR. Not exactly close. 60fps is not considered enjoyable VR. The 90fps minimum figure does'nt come out of the air. It has been tested for years now and everything below gives you a headache and is not enjoyable at all. Have you tried on of the earlier VR stuff yourself? Have you "enjoyed" those sub 90FPS tests? Just because PSVR ALLOWS 60FPS does not mean it will be nice for the gamer. And getting that FPS for VR will be more then a huge leap the developer have to take. I don't think the 480p figure is that far off. And i am sure 480p VR is not exactly enjoyable either. To sum it up: VR is extremly demanding and PSVR claims to tackle that with hardware as powerful as a smartphone. It would totally rock the industry IF IT WORKS, but it smells like a big fat pile of fish. Not buying the marketing crap. Show the real thing and we will see. Again: It would be awesome if it works,... if,...
  14. More like 4x in germany actually. Either way: it will be interesting to see for sure if they can get this to work. IF they manage it prices will have to drop considerably,... but i still honestly doubt it. Consoles can't even reach 60fps for ONE screen, let alone 2x60fps or 2x90fps. Still hoping for the magic to happen.
  15. When reading the topic i was sure they had naked dancers seducing random people. Seeing the pictures i have to question wtf is wrong there. There is literally not a single party in my country that has dancer with THAT many cloths on. How can THIS be of any concern to anyone. Grow up microsoft, seriously.
  16. I am really interested in seeing how the super cheap and slow package of PS4+PSVR compare to the 3x more expensive minimum specs of PC + Occulus / Vive. Just don't believe we will get any real VR on a console that was dated years ago, no matter how much magic they put into a headset. Google Cardboard offers VR as well, that does not make me want to use it tho,... ..again, really looking forward to test this and either laugh my ass off, or be amazed.
  17. Do you have any first hand experience on these claims, or just taken it from "someone"? Not saying i fully understand how VRam works apart from "more is usually better", but on a GTX 960 with 2gb VRAM Tomb Raider runs at 55-65ish fps with textures maxed as long as some of the more taxing stuff is turned way down (custom settings mind you, presets usually screw over performance or quality... or both). So,.. why do i need more then 4 gb vram if 2gb seem to work just fine? I don't exactly understand how that works to be honest, just wondering about my personal results that seem to conflict greatly with what you just posted. Why would i care if a game CAN fill up more vram, if it does not run bad if it can not fill up all that extra vram?
  18. No, it does not feel hot at all. That is why i am wondering (along with the crazy 2 sec intervalls). But yes, it does have a dGPU since microsoft is not selling the 256gb SSD version without a dGPU in germany. Very sad about that since i don't need the gpu but DEFINITLY need the space :-/.
  19. It is hard to be "self explanatory" because it is so far away from the truth that it is hard to believe what the headline (or the article for that matter) suggests. You can plug millions of android phones into a google cardboard. Does that mean android is the leading OS for VR? No, it does not. But marketing can spin words around and enough people fall for it (sadly) that they actually gain some positive PR for those straight out lies. AMD may have SOMETHING to do with 83% of all the devices that can technically be used for VR. That does not mean any more or any less then my cardboard example tho. Some cardboard is not the leading "hardware" for VR just because everyone can use it, just as android is not the leading OS for VR because so many phones can be plugged into a cardboard. And AMD has no meaningful market share for VR just because some of their parts power some devices that are less powerful then some phones you can plug into cardboards. (And yes, now i exaggerated as well on that last part,... at least i think no phone matches consoles yet,.. or do they? ;-) Edit: Just noticed a great example of that PR crap in the very same article. Check out the comparision between their upcoming tech and the "competition". That looks amazing right? Well... if you ignore the fact that they compared new and upcoming tech with a new and way smaller architecture and something that released last year. Then think about their Witcher 3 Benchmarks last gen and how much they cheated there. Sadly, comparing old competition with not even released nd future tech is working well for marketing. Not saying it is impossible for AMD to beat out NVidia, not by any means! But that comparison is plain out useless.
  20. No, please. Enlighten me. How can hardware THAT cheap and a console that was dated years ago,... offer any meaningful VR experience if every tech savy website there is (including THIS one) stated just recently that barly anyone can run VR on hardware that is 2-4times as expensive? Oculus and Co ask for a GTX 970 as a minimum. And that is not even counting the rest of the hardware AND the headset itself. So go ahead. Explain how a console that can not even run current games decently magically does VR in a SOLID WAY. Again: Every PC in the past 10 years can split a picture into two screens and call itself VR ready. Frames and resolution matter here and way more then for any other application or game. What kind of witchcraft can do that with console hardware and the cheapest VR headset announced yet? Please seriously go into detail here because id REALLY love to understand how that is possible. And no, i won't just believe it because some random guy said so. Marketing departments keep talking a lot of crap.
  21. So apart from all the guess work of "who said what and why and how was it twisted".... ..seriously. Who even believes this for a split second? Not even the greatest fanboy out there could be THAT blind to reality. AMD can offer VR, no doubt. But those figures are blown so far out of proportion that it is not even funny anymore. And don't even get me started on people calling a PS4 "VR ready" lol. Just because you can technically show a few frames of VR does not mean it is a VR experience.
  22. I just got my Surface Book and while people say "most issues are solved by now" i am unsure if mine is damaged or not. Just running any browser the fans start to spin with a VERY noticeable ramp up sound. They stop after 2 seconds... just to start back up again another 2 seconds later. If they would just KEEP running it would not be an issue i guess, but this ramp up sound is very noticeable and annoying. Since this thing is meant for university use noise is a big concern for me. I can hardly use it in any courses if i can not get rid of this fan issue. Microsoft offered me to take it back and i can order a new one, but they did not tell me if this is a common thing with Surface Books or a damaged unit. Since i know noone that has one i can not check on that either. So... anyone here has any experience with a Surface Book? I don't want to reorder the same thing, just to have the same issue again. Thanks
  23. Well. Got this mail and sadly.... while i see what really happened (Thanks Linus for explaining it),... i instantly canceled everything related to vessel. They try to get more people in by advertising with LMG. They may get that, but they lost me. It just screams SCAM all over the place in my head, even tho i know it is technically not. Vessel was meant as a pre view platform you could ignore. Now it just feels worse,... :-/
  24. Funny how Linux fanboys try to only read the parts they want. Installing Linux worked for her, but no distro supported everything COMBINED. It was either Skylake, or the GPU. Never was it both, or some of the random crap that did not work out of the box. No Mint install but 17.3 even booted up, and 17.3 did not accept nvidia drivers but tried to use the integrated GPU all the time. You can claim she is just bad as much as you want, but how can you screw up a single click install eh? Or better: How can you magically make something work that does not let you change anything anyways. It either does, or does not. This is exactly the same experience i had years ago myself and others report constantly. And no matter how awesome it may work for some people, the broad masses do not want to fiddle with terminals, slow updates and bad support for new hardware. And why would you? Windows 10 is free as well and way more stable and everything just works out of the box. We have Linux running on thousands of PCs in our university. Guess what? Most are unused and students prefer to use their personal laptops since we moved away from windows. well over 80% of them claim that their stuff just does not work like they expect or they need to invest way more time then they want / have. The Idea behind Linux as a whole was awesome, back quite a few years ago. Nowadays it is just like windows was pre xp. A buggy mess. But it is free so i guess people accept that.
  25. Try installing Mint on a pretty new machine. Try installing Ubuntu on a pretty new machine. Both versions don't have native support for skylake CPUs or even a dedicated GPU from the nvidia 9xx line. If you finally find a version that actually boots up with a skylake cpu,... it will not run the GPU. My GF just recently had to spend 2 weeks with daily new distros, just to get her work laptop working with Linux. Finally something from an Ubuntu Beta branch included the needed kernel. Manually updating the kernal is possible, but never worked correctly. The laptop either did not boot anymore, refused to accept the GPU again, or did not have working USB / HDMI ports anymore, ect. Long story short: Someone that has been working with linux on a daily basis, FIXING other peoples Linux PCs, for years,... took 2 weeks to get Linux running on a newly bought laptop. THIS is a huge reason why linux is adopted so badly. Just think about a person that tries to get into linux without years and years of debugging knowledge.
