  1. I'm a web developer. I use this pc mainly for things like Photoshop and writing code. I do work on many projects on a given day, which results in me having most files I access weekly open by default. I also do the occasional Photoshop. And gaming of course. Currently my Task Manager is like this: And sitting at a cool 44Gb. That said, I only have files for a single project open atm (restarted my pc recently) and PhpStorm is already at 3Gb.
  2. I'm planning on building a new pc and I was wondering how much RAM you should have as overhead. I currently have 128Gb and my computer 'idles' at 44Gb. I say 'idle' because I always have close to 40 Chrome tabs open for work. I feel like 64Gb would be pushing the bare minimum of what I need. I have gone over that only once before though. I'm unsure what to do. RAM isn't that expensive, but if you never use it... Thoughts are welcome on this.
  3. Yup. And the old one gets demoted to web / storage server. I still have 4 brand new (still in package) 10 Tb drives somewhere. Like I said, work's been crazy and I didn't even get the time to use them.
  4. Yes, I picked the 64Gb option to the left, and the only kits it gave me were 4x16Gb. Only reason I picked that one tbh. I used to be up-to-date on the latest and greatest, but been working my butt off at my new job for the last 4 years and once you get behind it's tough getting back in.
  5. Thanks for your reply. You answered while I was typing out a reply to Jurrunio, so I explained my reason for the 3900X there. Your reason for mobo, PSU and CPU cooler does make sense however. I will use those, thanks! I might combine both your answers and go for a dual 2x32 Gb RAM config. Then I'll hit 128Gb. If that's still not enough then I don't know what to do. I think I'll stick with the 2080S. I'm well within my budget for this config. You've both lowered the total of this build by a lot. So paying a little extra for some performance is not an issue. Thanks a bunch for your reply!
  6. This is my work pc as well as private, so any hardware malfunction will cost me more than paying a premium upfront. I mainly picked ASUS, Corsair and Samsung because I've never had anything go wrong with them. I think I'll stick with the 3900x though. The main reason why I posted this is because I was working and my CPU reached 100% on Chrome and Apache. Nothing else running at the time. Doubling cores will fix it with the 3700x, but not as 'future proof' as I'd like. I thought the 6700K was overkill when I bought it and It's not enough now. I've upped the RAM though. Only 4x16Gb kit I could find on PPP was Corsair though. Thanks for the input.
  7. Hi I used to be up-to-date on most things, but with AMD stepping up their game and Nvidia overpricing their selection, I've kinda got no clue what would be 'reasonable'. Background: I make websites. So nothing super heavy on any pc, but I'm the only one working at this company who actually does some work. So I end up having 35% of our websites open at all times (24/7 since there's always something I'm working on and don't want to close to not lose track of where I am). This means I have 50+ tabs open at best and 100+ when my boss decides he's a **** and wants me to work on 20 different sites at once. I also do some very light Photoshop editing. And game whenever I find the time. I've always gone for a quiet build. So no RGB and I'll trade in a few bucks to save on sound. My pc is up on my desk, so noise starts to get annoying fast. I run 3 monitors: 2 x 27" old Samsung SyncMaster S27B350 monitors and a Asus ROG Swift PG348 for my main one. My problem with my current pc: I have so many tabs open that my pc has been struggling lately with RAM and CPU usage. I have an 'old' 6700K and 16 GB of RAM, so not the worst, but enough to annoy me. My GTX 980ti is doing fine in games and the light bits of Photoshop, but might as well upgrade while I'm at it. Requirements: - Room for the 4 HDDs and 1 SSD I have - If possible I'd like to include an M.2 for Windows and 1 or 2 games. - Quiet over flashy. I've never liked RBG and have thus been with Fractal Design Define's since the beginning. Can't see much RGB when there's no window. - Enough RAM and CPU power to run 100+ Chrome tabs at once while still managing to load up a decently demanding game (FFXIV and the like). - From what I remember, I would need at least 2 HDMI and 1 DVI for my monitors (that's what I currently have. Not ideal, but my 980ti only has 2 HDMI-ports iirc). Anything better than that is welcome. Like I said earlier on, I'm particularly unsure about the CPU and GPU. Will a Ryzen 9 3900x do the job or will a lower tier one be fine? Same with the RTX 2080 Super? Any alterations are much appreciated.
  8. So, my original Logitech G5 finally broke today. Yes, I've had the same mouse for 14 years - bought soon after it was launched. I was looking at getting a new one a couple months ago since I had a feeling it was nearing its end, but now I can't remember which ones I had in mind. What better way than to ask the nice people on the LTT forum for input! Specs and info: - Budget can be anything, as long as it's not stupidly over the top (200+ USD). - I play MMO's and a shooter/survival game - I do web design - I need more buttons than my old G5 had (1 extra on the thumb), but not so many that I will press a million of them when moving the mouse. I was thinking 7-ish range? Is that any good? I honestly have no idea since I've actually never bought a mouse except the G5. - An ergonomic one would be great, but not at a trade off in any of the above or something super weird like vertical mice. I currently use an MX Master 2S at work (the few days I don't work from home). Is this one any good for gaming? I honestly never tried. I like it, but don't use it enough to say if I truly love it like my G5. So lovely people, sell me your favorite productivity/gaming mouse! (and thanks!)
  9. Hi So quick intro into what I have and what I'd like to do with it: I have a rack mounted server for work that will also functions as a NAS (soon). Streaming from my NAS to my tv and pc should be a no-brainer. What I'd like: Listen to music on a wireless headset (brand and type TBD) anywhere in the house. I thought a wifi headset should be something that's possible, but all I find are bluetooth headsets, which have limited range. I have decent wifi coverage everywhere in my house. Is it possible to use a wireless headset to listen to music/audiobooks/whatever uninterupted while moving around in the house? Quickest solution (and cheapest?) will be a device that can connect to wifi, stream the music and then connect the headset to that. But I would need to carry it around with me. I would love input and ideas or alternatives. I think this would be a cool project, even if it turns out to be theoretical only due to cost.
  10. @nicholasfmathison: It's back again. Any ideas?
  11. @nicholasfmathison: Well, it's gone now. It did not update any drivers though, but I rebooted again just to be sure. Received a continuous loop of Memory_management BSODs. A complete shutdown fixed that. I hope the problem is gone for good now. Thanks Nahbyr
  12. @nicholasfmathison: No, Windows 10. Clean install in Nov last year
  13. Hi MrDrWho13 I just did a driver update with a clean install. It moved the 'window' (see attachment). As I said, I have uninstalled every program I do not need on a daily basis, so there's nothing that should be coded badly. I really hope someone on LTT forum can figure this one out. My OCD can't take this kind of abuse. Nahbyr
  14. Hi Last week I bought a new monitor (Asus ROG Swift pg348q, yay!) and since then I have noticed that on one of my monitors I would get a border of a window even though there is no window present. I might have had this before then, but I was using a black desktop background so I didn't notice. It looks like when you hover over a window in your taskbar and every other open window gets outlined except for the one you're hovering over. I have tried ending all the processes I did not know or care about and it's not going away. I have tried looking on the internet and couldn't find anything that worked or fit the problem. I have also tried uninstalling anything I didn't care about and running a couple of applications to check for malware/virus/whatnot. So I thought I'd see if some smart person on the LTT forum might know what it is and how to get rid of it. I've attached a screenshot of the desktop. The border is on the right side. Thanks for any help you can give me on troubleshooting this.
  15. Hi I bought a completely new pc last year: PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mCDvLk Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mCDvLk/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($348.99 @ SuperBiiz) CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($114.99 @ B&H) Motherboard: Asus Z170-DELUXE ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($299.99 @ B&H) Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($96.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($87.77 @ OutletPC) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Classified ACX 2.0+ Video Card ($678.99 @ SuperBiiz) Case: Fractal Design Define XL R2 (Titanium Grey) ATX Full Tower Case ($129.99 @ NCIX US) Power Supply: SeaSonic 760W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($148.99 @ SuperBiiz) Total: $1906.70 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-04-11 16:02 EDT-0400 I'm now looking for new monitors. The current ones I have are 2x 27" Samsung Syncmaster S27B350's. First I was thinking of getting ultrawide monitors, but these seem to be expensive. Then I was thinking of having a single mount for the new monitor setup. This does mean that the border of the new monitors has to be as small as possible. I'm not sure if it's worth going for 3 monitors or if the money for a more expensive monitor stand and the 3rd monitor is best invested in getting 2 monitors with the result that these would be better than when I buy 3. I know some hardware pc stuff, but unfortunately I'm not that well-known about monitors, especially the most recent ones. Price range for monitors and stand is 750-1K euro combined. Monitors would mostly be used for gaming and I will be designing and developing websites on them. What better place to ask for help/input/insight than the LTT forum. Cheers Nahbyr
