  1. Had an idea about scrapyard wars as the last iteration is dead due to being able to be spotted, so this would be the next version Go out and buy a bunch of cheap PCs or parts from various ads/craigslist/places that have cheap resale parts, put the parts in bins, whoever can make the fastest from the random assortment of unlabeled stuff wins. Multiple builds allowed in time limit. All computers built get donated to some charity that needs them. Twist could also be if they add broken parts to the collection. Some of it fixable, some of it not so much. That'll force the teams to test parts they want to use and to make the decision whether it's worthwhile to try and fix some higher end part or settle for a known-good lower end model. Gives the same spirit as Scrapyard wars, just the idea is that there is a Scrapyard of parts and pieces to choose from, its not about the $$ amount its figuring out what the stuff is in the bins and heaps, whether it works, and how well it works.
  2. What was the sensor that they attached to the garage door to tell if it was open or closed? I'm using a window sensor right now, but its flaky.
  3. So working from home I've been doing work on a server, and I've narrowed down some crashes to the graphics card. I have been running a GTX 970 on it, and have an ultrawide screen that runs at 5120x1440. It is running a Ryzen 7 without integrated graphics. I'd like to have a graphics card that can do that resolution, however I don't care about FPS, I don't game on it, I sometimes watch youtube on it. The primary driver of this box is to be a linux/fedora server that hosts vms, does minikube, and a host of other things, its used as my desktop for work. I have a separate machine for Gaming. Nothing requires a graphics card for it to run. I'm looking for a graphics card under $100-$150 in the Midwest area to replace the failing 970. Ideally it would support Display port, which is what I have been using, but while I could easily point out differences in the high end cards and what is best for what, I'm a bit lost on the low end cards. Was looking at AMD Fire and Nvidia Quadro, but it looks like the resolution was low for those, At same time know there is a shortage in the GPU market, and there may not be any good options.
  4. @linusTech But have they fixed the issue with the over tightened hinges that breaks the hinges after many months of daily use? Basically the strain on the hinges lifting up the screen. IMO need some metal running up the sides of the screen to distribute stress so its not all on a quarter inch of metal at the bottom of the screen. Just replaced the GS73VR last month due to that, got a DOA replacement, and then another with monitor issues, 3rd replacement was a charm. Thank god for Best buy Damage protection, I actually got refunded $30 due to the warranty plan going down. Love this beast for gaming while traveling and also running a full deployment of Openstack with multiple VM's for consulting work. Biggest difference between the 63 and 73 were HDD/SDD options, memory options, and graphics card options.
  5. New catchphrase for LMG staff "No, thanks!"
  6. I travel for work, am home 3 days a week, Depending on the cost of these apartments, and how much I might save, I would consider joining an apartment complex like it. But as of now, I don't want to be responsible for extra cleaning, or my stuff going missing/broken, so I don't bother.
  7. @SCHISCHKAinteresting idea, I hadn't though of putting the swap or other drives on the regular HDD. I got the gig as a new college grad in Computer Networking and Systems administration, My senior year Red Hat was at the Computer Career Fair, I got to talking to the recruiters at a mixer the night before. I had some done some self study on using Ansible with networking, along with a cloud computing class where we installed and learned to use Openstack. On top of that I think I did well at the socializing part of the interview process which is key when your a consultant going out and meeting new folks every few weeks. I also was looking at getting a job with a networking company at the time, but compared the offers, and looked what some of my friends were doing that graduated ahead of me, and decided, given the opportunity, that I would learn more and have fun traveling, then going the regular sysadmin route at another company, or for my other offer being a call center networking flunky for a big networking company. @Raziq_26 Not really an option, I work for a company called Red Hat, walking in client doors, and not running linux, that and for our tech support has limited support for windows.
  8. I'm getting a new laptop soon, to replace my work computer, my gaming laptop, and my home workstation. I travel for work, and I'm out on the road every week. Linux use scenarios: * Fedora 26 ( I'm a rhel consultant) * minishift, * docker, * the new ansible tower running * various vm's to simulate client enviorments. * LUKS partition for encryption Windows: * Windows 10 * Overwatch * Destiny 2 * Various other games at night What is the best way to split up the partitions and drives. I'll have 1 TB M.2 SSD as the main drive to boot off of, and a 1 TB traditional spinning drive, and 32 GB of RAM. So for the m.2 I'm thinking of splitting to windows 60/40 of the drive. to 600GB, and 400 for Linux, 40gb of that being swap. Though I'm familiar with installing both OS's, this will be my second time installing fedora with LUKS for encryption, and not sure how much space to set aside for it. As for the HDD, I was planning on using it to store media and other files, possibly in a file format both windows and linux can read. Either that, or doing a split for it as well to install media, and games that I choose not to put on the m.2. Any suggestions or useful tips would be appreciated.
  9. I was just breaking up laughing at how straight faced he stayed during the jerky. I love the new Luke 2.0, Evil Luke, dark bearded Luke. +10 on him doing more shows.
  10. I'm just glad that the crew actually read through and thought about the idea. I knew it was problematic, but I just had to get the idea out there.
  11. @dcb-z part of the challenge, they are not going to give out this hardware freely
  12. That's part of the idea, It would only work once, but I think it would be epic enough to do once.
  13. After Last weeks Wan Show that I just got around to watching today I had an idea for how they could do a Scrapyard wars with only using their "Youtube" fame, no Money. At a Tech show they are going to, they ask for equipment from the show floor. A few Rules/Ideas All items in the build must come from the show floor. Cannot borrow out of someone/companies personal equipment that they happen to have. No money can be used to purchase items. Companies cannot be notified ahead of time to bring extra Equipment for scrapyard wars. Time limit on period to gather items so as to not take up a large chunk of time and LMG and participants can actually do the work they are there to do (interviews, meetings, etc) Love to know if other people like this idea. I know it may not be a practical one, might be hard to pull off, but I think it could be a fun one.
  14. $1500 for a standing motorized desk isn't to bad. I'd love to have heard more about how you felt about that feature. To bad it has Lian Li form over function behind it.
  15. razer blade stealth, love the idea of the docking, but its a little pricey.
