suchamoneypit reacted to MartinKweh in 2600x overclock
i think 4.2 or 4.1 Ghz is possible though that will depend on your cooling solution. additionally i think the max safe voltage for 2000 series is 1.38 (needs confirmation) just try to see what your pc can handle. do a bit more research.

the 3950x beats the 10920x, plus on the same x570 board you can upgrade tot he future 4950x.

suchamoneypit reacted to Dutch_Master in Saving torrents to a network share (unraid) from Ubuntu
Your hunch about permissions could well be right. But first things first: do your torrents get downloaded at all? If not, you need to make sure your torrent client has access to the storage location, by making it a member of the group that has access to that location. To solve that you need the usermod command on the commandline.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, long day at work, dead tired, not really engaging the brain ATM.
Assuming your server runs Linux or BSD, try

suchamoneypit reacted to Bombastinator in what is the operating Temps of AIO or Custom Water cooling
I don’t think it’s a problem of reliability so much as that wild temperature gradient. -30c is going to require something other than water to start with. You’re looking at temperature issues normally only seen in watercooling by automotive companies. Home PC watercooling isn’t commonly used in outdoor applications. There are going to be weird heat shrinkage problems for one. Things like metals and plastics can change size and characteristics at temperatures like that. That’s some really untested stuff you want to play with. Many Auto companies actually maintain testing facilities in some small town in either Minnesota or North Dakota (I forget which) just so they can do this sort of testing on their new designs.

GPU and monitor make the most sense forsure, I would get something like this:

When Memory Express gets it back in stock pick it up for $520.
And for the monitor get a Freesync high refresh rate IPS display, I personally would get this:

Without doing any specific research, I can say its quite common for keyboard stuff (cases, switches, keycaps) to come from china. Really its all coming from china, its just whether there is a company with US stock.

suchamoneypit reacted to Ashley MLP Fangirl in linus is the biggest hypocrite on earth
In the latest WAN show he says that spending $20K on a Mac Pro makes him extremely uncomfortable, and that he's trying to make as much content as possible in a short period of time so he can return it.
now tell me this, when linus makes a 10 gamers 1 cpu machine, does that make him uncomfortable? or a 6 editors 1 pc system? is it just because apple refuses to send you a machine that you feel uncomfortable?
because it seems that way to me. you work with much much much more expensive stuff all the time, but only apple's system makes you feel uncomfortable while it costs less than the 2 systems i just listed, by a long shot.
please stop being a hypocrite and treat apple computers just like any other computer you cover, thank you.

suchamoneypit reacted to aaradorn in linus is the biggest hypocrite on earth
Apple computers aren't like other computers. They are designed for a different audience. If you spend 20k on a car that could drive 10 people comfortably to a destination then its pretty nice. If you buy a car that costs 20k but it can only drive you to your destination its a waste of money.

Use HWinfo64 instead with sensor mode. Scroll down to "Performance Limit Reasons" section. See what turns to yes when it throttles.

If ITX is more useful than having the extra 2TB Hard Drive (and higher-end motherboard), then I converted Case, Motherboard, and PSU to fix ITX and dropped the 3.5" HDD:

suchamoneypit got a reaction from SeanChen in Using 4-port NIC as a switch?
Is there a simple way to make a 4 port PCI card a Switch on my network? It seems its easy to do on ubuntu server, but There seems to be a lot out there for windows, and any specific videos are regarding Windows Server. Can this be done easily using Windows 10? Or is this something I need Windows Server for. My goal is to have a home server, and be able to plug in my PC to the 4 port card and connect to my network just as if I connected to a normal switch. Are there any drawbacks If I do this?

suchamoneypit got a reaction from amdorintel in ryzen 5 3600x vs threadripper 1920x
Pretty sure the motherboard for the threadripper would cost you a lot more and so it would be better to go for the ryzen 5, and the ryzen 5 will do way better in gaming too

suchamoneypit reacted to SenKa in What do you think of my build?
Thats a pretty bad PSU, that case looks like a hotbox, and I would trust a WD Green drive with my data as securely as writing all my personal and identifying information on a piece of paper, ripping it cleanly in half, and placing it on top of a trash can in NYC.
In a short word, change your PSU, Case, and Storage.
PSU, go for a CM V750 as a cheap fully modular PSU.
Case, pick basically anything that doesnt have a glass or plexi front panel
Storage, WD Blue is leagues better for HDD's, and for SSD's I would never cheap out on one. Get a nice samsung or kingston drive, even if its lower capacity.

suchamoneypit got a reaction from TechyBen in I don't get why people like/want wirelesscharging?
I disagree. I don't personally own a wireless charger but I recently used one after thinking what you were. Really like what others have said, its a convince thing. For example at work at a desk, its pretty convenient to have the phone sitting in front of you and you can just pick it up and put it down and it stays charged seamlessly. People will pay for the convenience, no matter how much you personally think you'll just put up with a cable. The charging pads aren't even that expensive. Its a convenience many people want, and is easily affordable. I can see someone scoffing at someone rich paying a stupid amount of money for a convenience, but wireless charging is at the point where its not a frivolity like that. Its affordable and makes life easier, people will want it and buy it.

suchamoneypit got a reaction from MancorJ in Anything needing changing?
Thats not a very good website in my opinion (and many others). I'd watch that video to get a good real world comparison. In synthetic multi-threaded workloads the 2950x is 50%+ faster though (just raw compute performance not really reflective of say gaming or video editing). And my point before of it having very good upgrade options in the near future that would be a drop-in upgrade.
-
suchamoneypit got a reaction from MancorJ in Anything needing changing?
and not to say waiting isnt a good option, you can always sell your current processor when you upgrade and buy 3rd gen and recoup a large cost of the upgrade.
-
suchamoneypit got a reaction from MancorJ in Anything needing changing?
I think the system will be pretty fantastic for that with the one exception that if you're gonna be utilizing all that CPU power Im guessing you might want to go with 32GB of RAM over 16GB. Id say 16GB minimum for a gaming PC, and this is clearly a bit more than that. Only getting 16GB of RAM is like skipping leg day.
I also think on that platform you will have a lot of fantastic cheap upgrade options in the near future, allowing you to add significant power for cheap.
