Power consumption has never effectively deterred people from buying something, just ask Core i9 CPUs.

It's gonna shake things up a lot. Yes the power is bad and typical AMD. However, anyone considering a high end GPU and monitor and can now go AMD - when you factor in a vega 56 beating a 1070 (rumoured) for $399 and then a freesync monitor .... it actually becomes a decent buy - provided electricity is cheap!!

Whats the core i9 equivalent on AMDs side? Threadripper? Oh.......wait.....the i9 is still a joke.

erm no they don't, from the 7820k review I watched, its worse than the 6900k and isn't exactly a tonne faster then R7 1700, but costs over twice as much - from the video below it seems to convey either there's something wrong in the bios etc, or X299 was truly rushed - of course it's just one video

That also doesn't change the fact that the 7601P is probably better than the 7980XE.

X299 is a joke at the moment, it's a rushed product to try and stop the Threadripper hype train.

    1) why is an i5 included on the Extreme platform without support for quad channel?
    2) Why are some raid configs locked?
    3) Why does the 7820K get outperformed in many apps/games by the previous 6900k when the IPC is supposed to be improved?

People compare products based on price point, I think other like me have see the R7 1700 vs 7700k thrown around more than 30 year old baseball. Even though they aren't aimed at the same thing, its how people compare products - by price point.  So in the same vane, why are people all of a sudden comparing the $599 7820k with the $290/$310 MSRP Ryzen 1700?

In all honesty I see why both sets of comparisons are made. But when you consider twice the cost - I mean OVER 2x the PRICE of a 1700, the 7820k struggles to convincingly beat the 1700 - yes it wins, and so it should at that price. The problem now is for AMD, they have created a CPU of their own now on the equivalent platform as just under the $599 with the 1900X going for $550 MSRP. AMD lose this (they will as it will still crap out at 4.1ghz) then intel can point a finger, I say a finger, as they still need to answer the $799 12 core and $999 16 core variants, which they aren't going to do at anywhere near those prices.

Only a minor few people buy the absolute best component (nice 5960X btw ) the rest of us set a budget and get the best they can at that price point. I switched from a 4790k (previous to that was a 3770K - just to point out I'm not a fanboy before I get accused lol - I bought the best at my price point) to the Ryzen platform as I wanted the cores, yes I mainly game - i'm taking a chance - I believe (my opinion not fact) that games are going to go more multithreaded and in the mean time I can use the extra cores doing other stuff. I spent some time deliberating between the 7700k and the R1700, and this is my point, at this time (in my opinion again lol) this is the only real choice everything else is AMD.

Obviously Intel were caught with their pants down a little (reminds a bit of Athlon 64 but not quite as bad) and I reckon Intel will bounce back real hard, starting with coffeelake

It is very capable and you are right, I can only go by reviews, if reviews aren't been carried out correctly then we should never buy anything without getting hands on testing, I'm not sure about you, but unfortunately I don't get evaluation components from either camp and that goes for most people. The actual ability to test one platform vs another yourself is incredibly rare. I did some pre and post testing of my 4790k vs Ryzen, initial findings weren't great, but 4 month later all is good.

Ryzen was a completely new architecture, yes the X299 chipset is new, but everything else is pretty much the same. I do agree and did say this in a previous post about 7820K vs 6900k, that either something is wrong with the architecture or mostly likely, something is off in the bios/config.

You see yes, there is a market for it - I however see it as a trap for tech noobs (the same people that bought 480 GTX over the AMD 5870) in that they will go "hey I got the newest platform from Intel and be stuck with an i5 and dual channel - maybe i'm just suspicious.

    This I didn't know, thanks

If this is the case then they aren't doing the tech community any justice/service - the exact same reason I unsubbed from Linus - the minute he became an entertainer I hit unsub. If other tech "reviewers" are siding with the majority rather than what is true ......... But I do normally go from more than one or 2 sources and usually use reviews from sites rather than reviewers, bit-tech been one of my preferred ones

I've gamed at both in everything from single player RPGs to MMOs and competitive FPS/MOBA games.  I switched over to 1440p when I built my last computer (2x780ti in SLI) and was overclocking my monitor to 110hz.  Now I game on the Asus PG279q at 120hz w/ULMB on and it's amazing.  I can't run max settings on the newest games but I can on most of the popular eSports games (CSGO, League of Legends, etc).  With a 1080ti you should have no problem at all maintaining 120fps, in a couple years you might have to adjust a setting or two to "very high" instead of "ultra" but frankly you'll never even notice.  My "recommended" settings still set to the highest on virtually everything on 1440p and my build is 3.5 years old right now.

This is nonsense.  First of all, most games are still using native 1080p textures, and we are years away from even getting 1440p textures let alone 4k.  Secondly, we are just now getting to the point where running 1440p at 120+ fps is reasonable on high settings with a single graphics card and we are still many years away from 4k being able to do the same.  The graphical difference in lessening (or with ULMB eliminating) motion blur makes a substantially larger difference than going up in resolution and being stuck at 60hz.

There are a lot Games now, that use native 4k textures.

What do you think, ULTRA Textures are in some Games? Some use up 6+ gb Vram just with Ultra textures. Go down to "High", and you only use 3gb textures.

but. 4k is NOT going mainstream for another 8 years or so.

We have 1080p since over 10 years, and what is Mainstream now? Exactly, 1080p. With still over 90% usage.

Btw, i don't like using the word "Mainstream", as it's unclear how you define it.

Right NOW, 1440p is MORE Mainstream than 4k. because MORE people use 1440p. Period.

You have no disadvantage with a "not so mainstream" resolution, copmared to a "Mainstream" one.
1440p has NO disadvantages compared to 1080p, aside from more Performance needed.
Games scale perfectly with any resolution you throw at it.

RyGuy99 reacted to aithos in Graphics Clarity Difference For Gaming From 1080p to 1440p
TV resolution and monitor resolution are two completely different things.  How many 1024x768 TVs do you see?  How many 1920x1200?  Oh right... that would be ZERO.  4k today is no different than 3D TV was back in 2009, especially in the monitor sizes and distances that most people are using.

Also, it's clear that you have no idea what impact texture resolution has or why it matters.  Did you know that PS3 1080p games were actually using 720p textures that were then upscaled to 1080p?  It wasn't until PS4 that console games started to largely use native 1080p textures, likewise PC games are still overwhelmingly using 1080p textures and upscaling.

Want to know what difference that makes?  Load up Skyrim without any kind of high-res texture pack (you can use lighting and post-processing mods but nothing that replaces textures) and look at it in 1440p, then install the same stuff except adding one of the high-res texture packs... they two look VASTLY different.  That's the difference between textures that have been upscaled and ones that were natively rendered in the game resolution.

You can talk all you want about how 4k is the future, but we are a good 8-10 years out from game engines and hardware being able to process native 4k textures and until then you're just watching a DVD on a Bluray player.  It might look better than on a standard Bluray, but it's not that big of a difference and in this case you're losing other substantial visual improvements related to motion...

I think you're confused, 1920x1200 monitors are still widely available today and in fact I have two of them at work that I use every day.  The only impact that 1080p as a "standard" has had on monitors is that the cheap production and quantity of the panels has made poor quality monitors a larger portion of the available models.  To put it bluntly, I don't care if there are more 1080p models available than 1920x1200 because I only care about *GOOD* products.

As for texture resolution, I've given you several points you have made no attempt to address or refute and based on your response what I've proven is that you don't understand what I'm talking about.  You're welcome to think what you want, but it's pretty clear you're just trying to justify your own purchase decision in your mind instead of looking at facts and logic... IE: it's not worth any more of my time to discuss this with you because everything you've said are subjective opinions and you haven't made even a single concrete point.

the 1080 missed the 60FPS mark in half the games tested, but this is WAY more powerful. with overclocking, I would be shocked to see it go under 60FPS at 4K

In your first post you said "you won't find an ultrawide that operates at it's ultrawide resolution at more than 60 Hz."

Then @Altecice corrected your statement when he linked a 34" Acer X34A Predator 3440 x 1440 ultrawide that will do 100 Hz at it's native 3440 x 1440 resolution.   Asus has another that does the same thing.
