Heh. Like I said, it reminded of me of the same. Bear in mind that the episodes in Mahou Shoujotai are half-length, so it's really more like 20 episodes time-wise.

Yeah, it's very old school. If you can dig that old-schoolness, it's a decent time with some great GAR, but it can be a bit of a slog after a while (especially for modern viewers). There's a bunch of loosely-but-not-quite-related stuff in the same "universe" (dubbed the Leijiverse by fans), and the most recent CGI film was pretty much a snapshot of what Harlock is like. If you don't have a soft spot for old school stuff, then probably the best place to start with the Leijiverse is the remake Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

In other news, I actually managed to watch a few episodes from this season. Little Witch seems like it's aiming high enough to care about, the others... not so much.

    Masamune's Revenge (1). typical.
Other than the revenge premise, this doesn't really stand out in any appreciable way from other modern harem-styled anime. So if you're not terribly into goofy revenge stories with a cast of unlikable characters, then there's not much here for you. Even if you're into them, it's a pretty cookie-cutter take on the concept so far, with mediocre comedy and less interest in telling a compelling story than just going through the childish motions. It's simply too cringey for my tastes, without the minimal self-awareness of something like Watamote. It took them the whole episode to do something remotely interesting, and they saved it for the cliffhanger. That's a pretty depressing sign.

    Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (1). typical.
The manga is reasonably fun, but for reasons that KyoAni seems ill-suited to bring out. They've never been good at subtler humor, and they've only recently hit puberty (heck, they just recently entered their Gainaxing phase). The result is a reductionist window on the manga that just kinds of jumps from page to page on the manga without much care for pacing, while downplaying its weirder undercurrents. They do toss in one new scene at the end, but it doesn't really accomplish anything. If you're crazy about yuri or screencap bait, then this should be right up your alley, but otherwise it's a tough sell compared to just reading the manga. I'm sticking around to see how brave KyoAni are, because so far it doesn't feel like they've matured enough as a studio to tackle some of the more risque elements of the manga.

    Konosuba S2 (1). mild pulse.
This still feels like the only thing keeping it together is the director's Herculean efforts. The writing and comedy were mostly lame and still stuck in first gear. The first half of the episode had a couple of funny bits that were (of course) stretched out way too long, including a classic lie detector sketch that will probably never be done as well as the Simpsons did it long ago. The second half was a disappointing bare-bones Phoenix Wright parody that completely fell apart by the end, even forgetting that the character already proved something during the trial. Ultimately it didn't feel like they have any A-material left; mostly just stale references and the same tired character shtick they beat into the ground in the first season. Still enjoyable enough to pass the time for a few eps, but just as forgettable as the bulk of the last season.

    Little Witch Academia (1). promising.
Finally something that stands out. I guess we should all officially get the obligatory "you're a witch, Akko" jokes out of the way now, huh? At any rate, this is all rehashed material to the point of rote formula, but the good news is that Trigger understands that, and clearly put their heart into making the cliches their own. It has that flair for storytelling which can transform an otherwise bland trek through the Hero's Journey into a genuinely fun adventure romp. In that regard it's a lot like Mahou Shoujotai, just playing it a bit more safe. Still, it's leagues above the other episodes I just reviewed, and I'd rather reward genuine effort than mindless cash-grabs, so I'm in.

I'm with you on that, though I did try to actually watch it once and gave up after 2 episodes. I'm done with these type of tearjerker drama anime. I get the appeal, but they ain't for me anymore.

All of the characters in AnoHana are "crybabies" in a sense, but well... that's the point of the series. It's about kids having to get over themselves and come to terms with a tragic event, and some of them are truly screwed up because of it. Not that it necessarily does a perfect job of it, but it clues you in pretty much right away that it's not aiming to be a dramatic masterpiece, just a tearjerker.

Yeah, Aria the Animation, the Natural, Arietta (OVA), the Origination, and now the Avvenire (OVA)

Great, keep the suggestions coming. But please include links from either Animenewsnetwork, Anidb or MyAnimeList (last prefered). Other sites might be / are structured confusingly or lack information needed. It helps copying information into our internal suggestion collection used for the weekly votes.
Also don't use line breaks in your recommendtions, that'd help too

    Good comedy:

    Gintama
It never gets boring, knows no taboo and plenty of action. Gintama takes a lot of stereotypical characters and puts them
in absurdly funny situations. This will make you LOL for real! I've never scene an anime that can revolve 20 minutes around
a hotpot but still be so amusing (ep 25). Gintama is mostly episodic with short to midlong arcs in between. It's perfect to watch
    on and off.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume (The Invader Comes from the Sea)
Ika-chan the squid girl comes from the deep sea to invade all land. Well she didn't get very far.
    Cute and hilarious.

    Uchouten Kazoku (The Eccentric Family)
Uchouten Kazoku isn't purely comedy and quite ... different. Clever at times. Hard to explain what is going on
which probably makes this anime so appealing. Something about a fight between Tanuki families!? Doesn't
matter, it saved my summer season.

Hayate no Gotoku! (Hayate the Combat Butler)
Hayate is a really unlucky boy. His parents shove all depts onto him, he has to run from the Yakuza and ends up
as a combat butler for the wealthy spoiled tsundere Nagi. He's constantly fending of a cunning talking tiger
(only he understands), a geezer that wants to kick him out of the mansion and lots of different loving characters.

    Inukami!
Comedy in this one revolves around perverts and fetishs. But in contrary to Amaenaide yo!! or Green Green it also has
a cute romance sidestory with the dog girl(s) that actually goes somewhere towards the end and makes it worthwhile to watch.

    Still not enough?

The only ones I don't recall completing are Blood Lad and Space Bros, but while I do want to finish Space Bros I think Erin is the underdog series here, and well worth the length, so I'm voting for it.
These are the general sentiments of the series I've seen online (and from my friends and myself):
    - Shangri-la was pretty promising, but ultimately disappointing.
    - Blood Lad is your typical dumb shounen series; not exactly bad for what it is, but it doesn't really stand out in any way.
    - Erin's for a younger crowd, but not too childish for adults. If you give it a shot it has a nice story about a character who grows through it.
    - ROD is basically weird "but in a good way" for the most part. Some spots are dumb-weird though, and it hasn't aged quite as well as the OVA, though it's still a fine watch.
    - Space Bros is just plain LONG, but surprisingly charming. There are great moments of payoff, but don't expect a full-out ending despite the length.

Aw man, I'm the only one who voted for Erin?
I've seen it twice, it's a great anime. It has almost everything you could want, great story, great music, good visual (to me), all of the drama... ... .... ... And a terribly annoying voice for the main lead, but that doesn't mean it's bad, you get used to it after 50 episodes! ... Wait, there's only 50 episodes? Well watch it twice so you get to enjoy it more!

Also, the synopsis really doesn't do it justice, that literally only covers the first few episodes, after that it's completely different. Can't really say much without spoiling... I'll just say she doesn't stay in the village for long...

Do note Space Brothers is a 99 episode series and is a proper anime with a actual plot.

Long running slice of Life recommendations:

(Copied some info from good reviews)

    Natsume Yuujinchou (4 seasons)
Very rooted characters with a touch of comedy and sometimes a slight melancholy looming in the background.
This mix is probably the best way of describing Natsume. Which also makes it very unlike other anime's that normally air.

    Aria The Animation (3 seasons)
The story is about Akari and her goal of becoming a gondolier in Neo Venice. It's all about friendship, growing up and pursuing your dreams.
Aria is probably *the* slice of life anime in existence. One of the most calming and relaxing anime's I've seen so far. It can really grow on you too.

Kemono no Souja Erin (50 episodes)
This anime follows the life of Erin that wants to become a "beastarian", beasts to be used in war. While its a story made for children (playing in the same fantasy land as Seirei no Moribito), Kemono no Souja Erin addresses adult topics at a mature level. The target audiences’ age is somewhat irrelevant, because the characters bloom, especially Erin. She’s a child character the viewer can admire and adore. Following her journey through childhood and into her teenage years, she comes to life as one of the most well developed characters I’ve come across.
Coupled with nicely fitting music and a special artstyle this anime is a real "hidden gem".

    Mushishi (3 seasons)
    We had that already.
