It was a 2.5" drive in an external USB enclosure. It may have been the cheap enclosure not protecting the drive enough, but who knows. It could have just been from bouncing around in my backpack as I traveled around southern California as well. *edit* However, I didn't have the issues until I got home, not at all during the trip.

It will be slower than a HDD by a fair bit but it will do.

Is your rig in the fridge? I mean these temps don't look right if you are just using a H110...
A h110 can only bring a cpu temp as low as the ambient temp in the room it is in, only exotic stuff can get it lower than ambient.

Yes you can ignore the cloud back up option, and they're pretty reliable.
Of course, as with all things there will be some bad ones. So, you might get unlucky, but generally WD is pretty solid stuff.
 
I've used WD externals, and they've been great. I currently have a LaCie external, it's also great (and faster), as well as a pair of budget/no name drives.
The only difference so far has been transfer speed. They've all been reliable.

Its certainly a good buy.
What they mean with "a waste of money for gaming" is that its "overpowered" for current games as no game uses all 12 threads. That does NOT mean its bad at games (its good, but for gaming an i5 would do just as well).
 
As for the 4930k vs 5820k:
4930k has 40PCIe lanes, 5820k "just" 28. 5820k uses a newer architecture (faster) X99 uses DDR4 and as such is more "future proof" 5820k is much cheaper

This. Look at Bioshock Infinite, GTA games, Max Payne, Metro, Just Cause, Older Assassin's Creed, Alan Wake, Deus Ex, ArmA, Batman Arkham Games, Elder Scrolls/Fallout games, Witcher, and Valve games. What do they have in common? They are all great achievements technically and gameplay wise, and they don't do yearly releases.

Is it another incredibly moron vid like the one they made when they tested the pentium G3258 against the i7-5960X in gaming and told everyone they played games the same?
 
Not only the CPU does impact performance very much in games, it does more than that: CPU DIDCTATES THE PERFORMANCE...the GPU is what dictates the IMAGE QUALITY SETTINGS you can achieve and fidelity...where as the CPU dictates ALL the performance...
See, any gaming GPU can run the games at any given framerates that the processor can feed them, the difference between GPU's performance in real world games will always manifest in IMAGE QUALITY and FIDELITY you can achieve...the CPU is dicating the performance.

I believe the consoles have APU's, meaning the CPU is their CPU (duh..) and GPU too.
The 2 consoles are not that powerful. Even a GTX 960 is better than them.

Ok your last explanation basically answers the question for you. If you really want "future-proofing" (which there is no such thing, but still) you should take the 5820k. Support for higher core-counts will definitely get better and therefore I would go with that.
You can also get much more RAM with that combo and just in case that will be important, you are ready to upgrade.
If the 960 is enough for you, and it will give you fairly good results at 1080p, that is also a good choice. Also with the X99 you can definitely get great multi-gpu support, so again very good for high-end future-proff setups.
 
Go for the X99 build.

An unlocked processor allows you to overclock.  This feature may save you some years ahead if you are still using it and can't upgrade but the costs are usually not worth it.  By the time this CPU is too slow, you'll want something new anyways.  The Xeon is the best value out there.
 
You can go for a 750 Ti but, the GTX 960 will Max out all games at 1080p with usually 60 FPS.  All of those games you mentioned will be maxed out. 
3200Mhz RAM or etc gives you 1-2 Frame per second increase vs slow RAM at the cost of 40% more price.  It's just not worth it and will never be.  I am maxing out the games I play with my DDR2 900Mhz RAM and 660.
The Titan X will max out everything period with at least 100 FPS.  (in 1080p)
 
What I listed will be exactly what you want if you want solid performance for 5+ years.
 
16GB of RAM is more of a personal conviction that any build $1000 or more should have more than 8GB of RAM. You will probably need to upgrade in 2020 based on the rate of increase of use.  Right now you can do 8GB but will need to upgrade soon.
 
I'd like to suggest exploring the genres exclusive to the PC like RTS, Management games, The Golden FPS games(the classics like Unreal), and many more things that aren't even gaming.

why the fuck did you do that? why do you need more than two gtx 980's? just rma the 970 and try to get your money back, your gtx 970 will probably bottleneck 980s, Physx barely needs any gpu power anyways

I would give you 4 reasons but I can only think of 3.5...
