zopa34 got a reaction from mustafaali61 in RJ11 inside wall wiring to RJ45
Removed plate from one connector and found out that is uses only 2 wires(6 avaiable, but used only 3 and 4). Looks like pretty use less sockets. They were installed in 2000.
Anyways, it isn't that important. Already have wire that goes from modem straigt to pc and another one to IPTV decoder. Just was curious if socket can be useful

So I one day I was thinking about it, tried googling but failed.
So I have many RJ-11(phone line)female connectors around my flat that used to connect phone, but I don't have phone for many years now and they're sitting empty.
My question is - Can I use these wires in wall to connect to the internet? I know that internet uses only 4 wires - same amount of connections has my wall mounts.
Can I just put RJ-11 connector on Cat 5e cable and on other end RJ-45 and make it to work?

The most important tip is to always always keep in mind that...... the back of the motherboard is very pointy and it hurts.

    not entirely true.
RJ11 has 4 connectors, RJ45 can use 2, 4 or 8. To get gigabit, all 8 are required, if you use it with 4 wires, you will only be able to get 100mbit speed and with 2 wires you only get 10mbit.
The difference lies in the gauge and quality of the wiring, along with the fact that the phone line likely isnt twisted pair, so you may get serious degradation or crosstalk depending on the length of the wire behind the walls.

It's actually not a terrible idea, but the only thing you would be able to do is plug your router in to one of the jacks, and you would only ble able to plug A SINGLE ethernet device to and of the other jacks as all of the jacks are essentially acting as a single ethernet cable coming from your router. You would also have to make sure that you actually disconnect the phone line incoming to your flat from the distribution so that it is disconnected from the outside world.

All in all it wouldn't be a very elegant or practical project.

As pwn_intended has said, it actually WOULD work, and theoretically you would get 100mbps over it, depending on a lot of variables. First being if you actually have 4 wires, a phone only needs two to work (tip and ring), but typically 4 will be ran in the wall.

If you do it, be POSITIVE it is disconnected from the main phone line. Phone lines have high voltage on them (48V IIRC, low amperage tho so its not going to hurt you) used for ringing the phones, and it would likely fry your modem or motherboard.

Also, phone lines work different than ethernet. Everything in a phone system is connected back to one point, so when you get a call all of your phones will ring that are connected to that line. If your phone panel is in a utility room, it would be a good place to setup your router and just take each line off the phone box and crimp on some ends.

Most phone lines are Cat3 cable, which actually was used for 10base-t ethernet back in the day. It is twisted pair wire, but the twist is over a longer distance and is not very good at avoiding crosstalk, or being reliable at long distances. Still, if the cable is all there, I think it would be worth a shot. 100mb wired is still much better than wireless IMO.

If you make a cable, you will want to use the blue and white pairs, not the first four wires.

A final option is to use the cable that is currently in the walls as a pull string, tape Cat5e onto the end of it and pull the cable thru. In reality, this rarely works due to the way that the cables were zig zagged thru a house and they likely used fasteners to secure the cable. But again, its worth a shot... remove the plate and see if you can pull the cable a little bit, if there is a lot of resistance it isn't going to work, but if you can get it moving you have a shot.

Yeah, 280 hits the sweet spot.
If you want a 270X, you almost might as well get a 270 and overclock it.
280 is the way to go.

For only €4–5 more, one of the 280's would be a better choice by far. And you've made a smart choice to avoid the GTX 760.

    I've had both the 270x @ 1100/1400Mhz (a small OC) & the Gigabyte HD7950 (280) @ 1175/1250Mhz (decent overclock)

The HD7950/280 Cores usually are known for their 'extra' OC headroom (altho never claimed as official, there are many forum users who would say 7950/280's OC somewhat better than other GPU's)

The framebuffer 3GB of Vram is certainly useful, even tho there was minimal to no hitching on my 270x/2GB card, I was also lowering details down in game to take me from 45fps Ultra'ish FPS to Med-High 60FPS gameplay, with a small set of tweaks to options.
With the 280 and it's 3GB there is even less to turn down (Only AA in some cases 8xAA down to 2-4xAA) and then boom, playable 50fps+, whereas the 270x has to be OC'd or have lowered details to get there...

If moneys SUPER tight, 270x, if you can manage more, the 280 FOR SURE.

    >Unknown name powersupply & Burnt CPU plug.   Sounds like a bad powersupply.  If you have another laying around the house that you could use, just to confirm the problem, that would be ideal.  Don't want to buy a new powersupply to find that the problem resides somewhere else.

Honestly investing in a proper powersupply is not something people should overlook.  It is afterall the lifeblood of your system.  You don't want it literally blowing up at some point.  Some great brands are Corsair, Coolermaster, Seasonic, and OCZ.

    Good luck.
