It's a smaller heatsink than the Noctua, and under the enterprise section. So that tells me it will probably accomplish that cooling via an extremely high RPM (and thus extremely loud) fan.

EDIT: Yep, that cooler is rated from 18-45.99 dBa, the Noctua is 14.8-23.6 dBa.
Limit them to 45W (ECO Mode) or 35W in the BIOS. My ASRock B450 board has presets for 35W and IIRC down to 25W as well.

I'm running Windows 11 Pro and don't have any of those files on my NVME OS drive (at least they are not visible).  All three of my Data Drives have the files and they have the modification date year of 2007.  As I said, I don't particularly worry about these.  All my Data Drives contain folders so I rarely even see these files.  If you feel like you have to delete the files, at least make an image of your OS drive so that if something happens, you can get the "before deleting" OS drive back.  Personally, I would just leave it alone and pretend you don't see the files.

They are all part of MSFT Visual C++ Redistributable package.  For whatever reason they will install on all the hard drives in your system at least that what my experience has been and all five of my drives have those files but different dates of modification.  There is some "controversy" as to whether they are safe to delete (Google can be your friend).  Since all of them are quite small just leave them alone.

As has been pointed out, having a security policy does not make parts of it arbitrary in the context of security.  That policy can say you must stand on your head whilst resetting your password, but that doesn't make it a legitimate and reasonable requirement for every end user.

If you had a good grasp of how varied work/personal life can get you would understand that this is not a case where they can just ignore a security risk and pretend it's the companies fault/problem.

Yes, apple have the requirement that you need an apple device to resolve this particular issue.  if you only have one apple device and it's not within your ability to access for 2 days when you have been alerted to a security issue with your account, then by this very requirement they have implemented (which isn't necessary from a security perspective) then absolutely that is apples fault.

I have an  apple account with $70 credit on it, I do not own an apple device as we speak, the last one broke and they wanted too much to repair it,  if my account for any reason is breached then I have absolutely no way to fix it. Any other company will let me log in from any browser, use the 2fa or other authentication process which would then permit me to reset passwords.

You, like half these other apple fan boys just don't know when you have been suckered into their marketing BS.

That's why I usually stick with slightly older hardware - my newest Apple device is my Series 5, I have an MBP 2012 and an iPhone 7 otherwise. Easier to repair and there's generally more info on its quirks then.

Not to say I wouldn't mind an Apple Silicon MacBook!

I want to chip in here, that despite me really disliking Apple - which is mostly for how they treat their customers, design their software and lock-you-in ecosystem - I really like their hardware.

When it comes to pure hardware quality and finish, Apple are hard to beat. The annoying thing with apple devices is that any lacking features or compromises in then are intentionally left out to create a need for an extra gadget or dongle, which they then charge ridiculous amounts of money for.

Latest macbook pro and it's onboard ssd is good example. There was no need to downgrade it from a space concern. It's just a way to sneakily increase their profit margin by adding a slightly cheaper ssd.

And the same was true about the usb-c only designs. Now all of the sudden they can have sd card readers and hdmi ports.

Other brands are far from perfect too, but usually are not as expensive and usually are easier to adjust and modify to your own liking. But eg Dell was (and to some extent still is) just copying whatever apple is doing, instead of trying to improve on what apple messes up.

Perfect laptop for me would be an M2 device with the adjustability of linux and compatibility of windows and the hardware-software optimization of OSX

    I like their products.

Do I like everything about them? No. But I like them more than other companies' products.

They also have THE best mobile phones currently. The A13 and up stomp all over Qualcomm's best offering, and the A13 is from 2019, not to mention battery life is great. RAM usage is also much better optimized on macOS - 8GB is fine with Ventura, but not so much with Windows 10/11.

Find My iPhone is very easy to use - you can locate any device running iOS 5 or newer (that's right, iOS 5, from 2011), and locate from any device on iOS 9 or newer (due to security requirements, you used to be able to find from iPhone OS OS 3 or newer.)

Everything works very well together. I have quite a lot of Apple products, partly collected from relatives, partly bought by me. My Apple Watch works great with my phone - I can make calls, send/receive texts, play music, use Discord, use Reddit, use a web browser (last three require third-party apps, but those apps are quite good - MiniCord, Artemis, and WatchBrowser, in order), and more. I can cast stuff from my phone to my Apple TV, or just play my iTunes library directly from it. I can sync photos from my phone to Apple TV. I can open a tab in Safari on my phone, then open that in Safari on my MacBook. I can use iMessage on any device signed into my iCloud, also iOS 5 and up. I can AirDrop files from one device to another - extra handy when you're jailbroken.

tl;dr: "It just works" is real.

And funnily enough you don't need a windows machine to reset your ms password and you don't need android to reset google. Yet the security of their accounts is arguably just as good.

you have a pretty slim grasp of just how much variance there is in work and responsibility, not too mention the crossover between work and private. It's not very hard to imagine this situation occurring quite a bit.  Many of us have work perks that we use in personal life.   The idea that someone should just ignore a security breach/exploit that effects them simply because "not my job", is basically the worst advice I think you could give.  It would be better to say nothing than to pretend that is a good option.

According to this source (in Swedish, but you can translate it) a basic repair kit for opening the phone comes in the box with the phone.

Furthermore, most people who are savvy/interested enough to repair their own phones usually tend to own an ifixit kit or something similar.

Nokia launched its new G22, a phone with focus on being more eco-friendly and presumably easy to fix yourself, by making it easy to open up and access internal components.

I dont know much more than that, but thought it would be a fun thing to mention here and hopefully Linus is gonna make a video about this phone too.

If you know more, just post more info in the thread.

But you have no other Apple devices, so whats the issue?  Why didn't you setup a work specific account for the work machine, especially since you don't have apple products and aren't taking advantage of the ecosystem?  It's not stupid that work didn't create the account for you, it's silly that. you didn't do so yourself.  If you need the App for work, and work provides the computer, they ought to provide the App or pay for it.

You can register an Apple account without a credit card.

Can you blame Apple for this problem if you created it yourself?

victim blaming,  he did not create the policy that says he can only change the password if he has an apple product.  That is apples doing.  Also whether the account is business or personal is moot,  that has no bearing on the issue.

Just deal with this work issue at work when you have your work issued Apple device.

Sometimes people make problems for themselves and blame Apple.

Tying software and hardware together in an ecosystem is really, really bad for the consumer.

Microsoft has sucked at this, and I can creatively argue their lack of success encouraged competitors. It led to the rise of virtualization and the cloud.

Show me an Apple product in a data center. Apple is just a lazy surrogate for the opposable thumb we keep sucking on. They hypocritically have this big ass donut built as some kind of work utopia promoting crystal palace virtues while keeping slave factories churning in China. No thanks.

Not sure why it's mostly tied to Apple devices. You can reset it without them, just keep selecting the options for don't have access to this device/can't use these options till it initiates an Account Recovery. Can take a few days though: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204921. So it likely isn't worth a shot if you're just going to have access to the machine next work day.

Mortis Angelus got a reaction from e22big in QD-OLED - what's taking them so long? Alternative sizes?
Actually the CX was less bright than the C9, which is why it was kinda funny that when the first EVO panels came, they were essentially the C9-panels with some more safeguards. The C2 should be brighter than the C1, which was as bright as the C9. Or am I misinformed here?

Nevertheless, this thread is getting really off-topic, isn't it? This was just to discuss news and potential rumors and potential development pipeline for what we can expect. Not a "is OLED good or bad"-thread. Plenty of those threads already. I respect your criticisms towards OLED, and they are legit (even if I think you are overly cautious), others might find the benefit of the technology.

It is just that after I got my C9, both my PC monitors look so terrible by comparison; even my photo-grade panel (which albeit is from 2011).

Best compromise would probably be a miniled screen, but they don't come in any smaller size than 32" still, and they are somehow more costly than OLED. The dream is MicroLED, but those are faaaaar from being accessible for normal consumers in a 27"- 32" format, even less for a sensible price. Thus QD-OLED (or regular OLED too) is more appealing for that (imho) perfect experience

Mortis Angelus reacted to Stahlmann in QD-OLED - what's taking them so long? Alternative sizes?
Only the first few batches of 42" OLEDs had the WBC panels. Vincent from HDTV test said so in his initial review and i can confirm that my unit is in fact WBE (checked through the service menu). The only reason why smaller OLEDs are not as bright is because they have a smaller "pixel aperture ratio" according to LG. So basically the pixels are smaller than larger TVs, which is why they don't emit as much light. If they'd be tuned to the same brightness as big screens they would emit more heat and need more power, resulting in a shorter lifespan. Honestly, to me that explaination checks out.

The FIFA example is actually pretty good at emulating how an OLED would work with a taskbar or a browser adress bar long-term, as it has it's score overlays etc that are constantly there.

The 24" IPS i have at the side is only there to play back some video or podcast while i'm playing games. As long as i'm not ingame i still use my main OLED as my primary display. Literally the only reason why my 2nd screen is not OLED atm is because there are no small OLEDs available for a reasonable price. Plus i just cannot get by with only 1 display, no matter how big it is. Burn in is not a factor in this decision.

LG seems confident in their panels, seeing as this generation of panels will also be the first to fuel dedicated gaming monitors that are specifically meant for PC use. Some upcoming models include the Corsair Xeneon FLEX, LG 48GQ900 and LG 45GR95QE.
