  1. So to start, my internet is literal garbage in the first place, but that doesn't quite explain what i'm about to type. My internet is also Satellite internet from exede, my speeds are supposedly 12Mbps... at night from 12-5AM, the bandwidth goes to 'unlimited'. I say 'unlimited' because it's obviously capped at some point. This needed a TL;DR... PC downloads steam game at 2MBps, xbox downloads a game at the same time and gets 1MBps or so. Why can't I get 3MBps bandwidth if I only use the pc with all external devices on the router disconnected/off ? So my question needs a little 'story' behind it to explain it in a decent way honestly. While no-one on earth would be dumb enough to game with a 600ms ping in MP games, there are some that are possible to still play and enjoy. I have my PC that I mostly use to play games, and I have an xbox one x as well as a nintendo switch and a few other consoles. 99% of the time these consoles are completely un-plugged (no power at all) to try and give as much bandwidth to my pc for games. I can download between 12-5AM on steam and get around 2MBps. Which is about 16Mbps, so i'm not too worried about that being higher. This is the strange part though. I discovered while I am downloading at around 2MBps on steam on my pc, my xbox one x was downloading a game because I left it on, and download rate was 7-8Mbps. While these speeds are low...it doesn't add up.... I tried turning off and unplugging everything else from my router that uses bandwidth to boost my speed, it's a 300 router so it's fine, and my pc is wired anyway. I got the same 2MBps on my pc downloading a game. I know you can download games much faster on steam. Now some interesting bits. My PC is hard wired, connected to a 70 ish foot ethernet cable, and my xbox is on wireless... I am going to test using ethernet on both my pc and xbox one x and see if i can get 2Mbps on my pc and at the same time get 1-2MB on my xbox one x as well. Is there any reason at all that I can get 2MBps on ethernet + 8Mbps on the xbox, which is a total of 3MBps or so of bandwidth, but removing all other devices other than the PC doesn't increase the bandwidth? Or am I missing something here? I should also note that no QoS or anything is active on my router to give anything more bandwidth, I simply disconnect everything when i am gaming on the pc to get the best connection I can.(try to anyway) I"m curious if this is the same for other connections too, so maybe you can do some testing and reply to this
  2. Sounds great! (sorry for the really late reply). I'm thinking about a single 970 until the 980ti gets released. If it's under 700$ i'll be getting one of them, but if it's over 800, i'll more than likely just get another 970, as i'll be selling the 970 for about 250-300$ if I do get it. Do you ever run benchmarks on your pc? would be nice to see a few games max/min/average fps and how hot the 970's get.
  3. Sounds awesome! I'm still on the fence about 970's and 980's. because 980's are such a big price bump and I still have more than the gfx cards to get to complete the system.
  4. Thanks! I planned on a 240GB SSD, but i know they have set amounts of life so I really just wanted to keep using the SSD to a minimum, so basically just have the OS on it, i may get a secondary SSD later just to put games on as well. 240GB is what i'm most likely getting, but i'm under a budget so that's why i'm not getting it until later. I actually already have a 2tb drive, but i'm going to use the 2x1tb drives as backups in raid 1 (i think that's the copied data one) That way, everything is always protected because i've had one too many hard drives die. Also adding another 2tb later i'm getting from a friend that's still in the box so SCORE! As far as the air cooling goes, that's what i'm mostly doing here, a silent air cooled system. and I have seen a similar build actually built similar (very) to this here: (i didn't actually see this video until i decided on all the parts together, and just kind of happened to be there lol)Anyway, if any problems do arise, i'll be of course adding a water cooler to the processor, as at this point... that's what i'll be using the most with graphics design, rendering videos, streaming and gaming. Thanks again ! P.S. I noticed you had 2 asus strix 970 sli , how's that going?
  5. So i'm almost done putting my first (well actually second) but FIRST gaming rig together, the first was just random parts i had available and that was just to run starcraft! Anyway, on to the topic at hand. The build in question is here : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xGHXNG Partlist if you don't want to go through the link is... Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Hero Processor: Intel i7 4790k GPU: Asus strix GTX970 4gb in SLI (still open to question as I do have a temp card to use before i upgrade to these, which is a really REALLY small gtx 620 2gb.) RAM: 16gb 1866mhz Gskill sniper series ram (i read in a few places that any higher voltage over 1.5v would die out quicker??) HDD: 2 1tb WD drives, probably swapping these into backup drives as I already have a 2tb drive to use SSD: gonna pick up a 120gb ssd later for booting OS etc. PSU: 750w EVGA Supernova G2 80+Gold Case: Inwin GR-One Black Other: standard blu-ray rw drive, sidewinder x4 keyboard (I won it from a ghosts tourny so luckily didn't need to buy one, maybe upgrade later., mouse is a etekcity Scroll X1 (surprisingly good, would recommend!) Monitors: Getting a 27'' IPS as I"m a graphic designer, and possibly a 120-144hz for a gaming screen as I also plan to stream with this build. Sometimes using the IPS for setting up my streaming programs and the other monitor to actually play games on while streaming (sometimes console games) So, the whole point of this, is just to ask what everyone thinks! Obviously there is a budget for this build, but it's spread over a wide range so I'm able to get 1-2 parts a month sometimes. But, nonetheless It will be finished in a month or two now as I have the processor, case, mobo, psu, ram, and hdd out of the way, in other words the system is operational (well it will be once everything gets here). Will of course post pictures when they are here! I'm also doing a YT video during build and when i upgrade the build with the new gfx card etc. So, what do you think?!
  6. yeah doubtful, i'm actually doing dual sli with 2 asus strix 970 4gb cards, i'll have one for a while, and then get the other a bit later and sli. I'm not an extremely graphics hungry guy, I can play low graphics all day haha. Only getting this build so i can do gaming an medium-high and stream as well. Don't get me wrong, i'll probably play GW2 on ultra or whatever it's max settings are, such a great game. Thanks for your help btw!
  7. I was able to mess around with the IPS in store, best buy has the asus 27'' IPS 60hz 5ms monitor for 250, close to that. I'm only worried about motion blur because i seriously hate it that much, and it gives me migranes if it's a big issue. I'm probably going to get IPS though, 1, larger screen, and 2. i'm a graphic designer. Would it be possible to mix and match 2 different monitors? i.e. an ips 60hz and a tn 144hz? That seems like the best option but just sounds like an overall bad idea, but figured i'd ask.
  8. I mean the TN monitors i work on aren't that bad, so I was mainly wondering about the motion blur. I can't seem to find anyone who has experience with gaming on both to compare.
  9. So, short question (that i'll probably make long because i suck at summarizing). I'm looking into monitors for my computer build. Will be primarily a gaming desktop but I will also be creating/editing videos for youtube, as well as creating/editing graphics w/ photoshop. So far i've decided i at least want 24'' dual monitors, or dual 27'' monitors (I'm slightly OCD). My thoughts are though, since i work on two 24'' dell 60hz monitors 5ms response time, they're 200$ Everything seems fine for basic applications, and although i can't play games the monitors seem fine. The question is, would i be better off getting a 60hz IPS 27'' asus monitor (i've seen it, and it looks great!), or to get a 144hz 24'' TN monitor? Reasoning behind the hard choice is because I hate motion blur, and while this isn't my first build, it's my first official gaming build. I know 144hz is obviously faster, but will the 27'' IPS monitor have more motion blur? That's my main concern honestly, i hate motion blur and was told IPS would make everything look very good, but a 144hz tn would be better to get rid of motion blur. So either 24-27'' monitors but most likely 24'' because a 27'' monitor 144hz seem to be priced extremely high. So, I was just curious if anyone had any experience with this, and can give me first hand whether or not i should get IPS< because i do love the color and viewing angles on the IPS 27'', and for 250$ it looks great! The 144hz asus 24'' monitor i saw, also 5ms, looked great as well, but i haven't been able to try games on either. Thanks for the feedback in advance!
  10. That was supposed to say 'budget for the build' not budget build my bad! I did actually see that 750w G2, and it wouldn't be bad for what i'm looking at. the 1000w was a starting point, not what i actually wanted. according to myself and others, i wouldn't need more than 700w even with the 970 SLI (does it make a difference these are the 4gb versions of 970s?). I appreciate the feedback of course! Overall this is going to be around 1500 total (maybe more depends on pricing at times i buy things) once i'm done, it's not much less a budget build than a strict price range build. I've priced a few things and so far it's still around 900$ total if I get the correct prices, I'm getting the Processor and Mobo first, and storing them until i get the more expensive pieces of the build, then of course finalizing everything. I'm actually not using the SLI until most likely summer or later, for now i have a gtx620 2gb card, it sucks, but it's what i'm using to prevent myself spending my entire paycheck on one card. That being said, the main focus for the build atm is: 4790k Processor > asrock fatal1ty pro Motherboard > 16gb 2x8GB RAM > 1tb HDD > 700-800w PSU I already have that gpu to use until i'm ready to set up the rest of the build, being the 2 970 4gb in sli, which i'll be buying seperately but, based on the sli performance of the 2 cards together, i can't wait for that. So, looks like pretty much everything is done, at least as far as deciding on the PSU wattage and brands I should look at. Everything else guess it's just gonna take time now I originally wanted to get the 760 4gb but, was quickly told the 970 4gb being newer, faster, and around the same price, would be a much better option. Plus, everyone loves how the cards look! Any recommendations on versions of the 970? I've been looking at EVGA and the Asus Strix 970 (it has alot of great reviews about how it has great performance and how quiet it is) The only thing left is a CPU cooler, which I actually already have that was well, just waiting on getting it in my hands.
  11. Thanks! I actually didn't mention I use pcpartpicker, my mistake there! I did see a few $110 1000w power supplies. I'm in the process of finalizing a check on http://www.coolermaster.outervision.com/to check the wattage i would be close to, and get 50-100w over to accommodate for changes. I've had a 4-5 year PC before but it wasn't a gaming rig, I have no doubt i'll probably get a year or two and end up changing something, but i'm working on at least a 2 year build at the least, but i'll probably slowly build another just, well because i can lol. Thanks for your recommendation though! Thanks ! I didn't think i would need the 1000w, it was more of a fail-safe recommendation from what i've looked up. But i figured I wanted to get more around a 750-800w since you can get the wrong PSU and screw up the components, and i definitely don't want that. I did the cooler master site recommendation and another random PSU calc just to see what the recommendations were... so far it hasn't been above 650w to my surprise, even with the dual 970 GPU's so a 700/800 would definitely do the trick!
  12. So, first time here at the linustechtips forum. I've been watching Linus tech tips videos at work for insight on possibilities on my gaming pc i'm building. This isn't my first build, BUT it is my first build for gaming/streaming/editing etc. It might get a bit confusing, as i suck at summarizing....So, here we go! I'm planning on over time upgrading this build to be complete, and of course room for upgrades 4-5 years or less from now. Here's the build i'm planning so far, I'm pretty set in stone about what i'm getting, and i've been building the specs for this for the past few months. I'm not building a 4k machine, but I may eventually upgrade components for 4k, but for the most part 1080p is just fine and i'm mostly looking for maximum performance with most games in 1080p and at least 60fps. GPU: 2x Nvidia GTX 970 4GB (one to start but buying a second one later) MotherBoard: ASRock Fatal1ty z97 professional motherboard Processor: i7 4790k RAM: 2x 8GB Gskill sniper memory 2133mhz (1.6 volt i think) Storage: Eventually a 120-240GB SSD, but to start i'll have a 1-2TB 5400 RPM. (Open to suggestions on Hard drives as I'm also looking at 7200RPM drives, but keep being told that 7200 is faster, but won't be needed if i have an SSD and i'm not worried about load times.) Case: InWin GROne (most likely black edition) and.. of course. Monitors: 2x 27'' or maybe 24'' (i'm just unsure) PSU: (This is the part i'm a bit unsure of, mostly because I know I'll need alot of options regarding cables, etc.) I'm thinking of going with a 1000w PSU but I want to make sure i'm not pulling more than i need. I've been told an 800w would be good for what i need, but i'm open to suggestions. I'm not so much asking for a PSU wattage suggestion, as I am asking what PSU brands should I be looking at. I've looked at a few reviews and so far the top brands seem to be Cooler Master, Corsair, EVGA, there's only 4-5 but i can't remember them all. (maybe NZXT, but not sure) So, that's all i'm looking for! Also, if anyone knows where to find these components for a decent price, or sees an issue (that isn't related to any AMDvsNvidia or intel vs amd options) feel free to recommend separate pieces for this build. Also, via price-checking this build is around 1500$ finalized, mostly due to running dual 24'' and/or 27'' monitors. Still debating on if i want to spend 200$ on a 27'' 60hz over a 24'' 144hz monitor. Budget Build, some pieces i'll be buying over-time and not all at once! GPU: $350 MotherBoard: $150-$200 Processor: $350 RAM: $150 Storage: $200 (but will expand in future most likely) Case: $100-$120 Monitors: $200-$300 per monitor, plan on two, but if i find a deal for any 24-27'' around $150 that are decent i'll probably go for those, so far looking at ASUS monitors, but also LG, and a few 'decent' options, and will start with one monitor, and get the other later. PSU: Not trying to be cheap but would rather keep it under $100 I'm guesstimating around 750-800w would be what i'm looking for. I appreciate your help, and thanks for reading, because i know i type too much.
