Ancalagon's Achievements

  1. I currently have a logitech k120 and a Sentey Lumenata Pro.
  2. Avoid running over any electrical boxes in the ceiling if you decide to put it in the attic. You can cause electrical noise on your line and degrade your signal.
  3. What I find interesting is the motive. Though I'm happy they are doing what they are doing because I think the site is scummy and you'd have to be an idiot to use an online site like that (at least using real information which I'm not sure if that is better or worse). I'm a little saddened they aren't doing it for a moral cause like don't cheat, but are instead doing it because they want to be able to hide the past. Doesn't seem as noble to me as I'd like... But result are results! GOOD WORK!
  4. If you'd like to see what the free service of Google Fiber offers, here it is! (Don't have the funds right now for the Gbit connection )
  5. My current mouse (which I have had no gripes with) is starting to wear out. The braided cord is wearing and the left click sometimes doesn't register. Plus a new tech toy is always fun!
  6. Ancalagon is a dragon in J.R.R. Tolkien's book The Silmarillion. He's a massive black dragon who is so large that when he died, he toppled mountains. I love all things Tolkien and I think dragons are an awesome mythological creature (who doesn't?) Not my usual username, but I'm sure I'm among fellow Tolkien nerds on here who might appreciate this.
  7. I guess I should be more clear with my thoughts. Obviously no one wants to try and create things and play AAA titles on their phones, that's just silly. My thought is more along the lines of needing large towers with CPU's running at 4+ Ghz and loads of ram and high end graphics cards. Will the home computer become the size of a raspberry pi. Something with enough power to do the basic operations, and run a web application. You'd still be able to connect a full size monitor, keyboard, and mouse to it, but the real computing is done on a server (thus eliminating the need for a large case for better airflow, water coolers, fans, and the like).
  8. Sorry to hear you're sick, should probably consult a doctor. I did say mobile devices, and last I checked laptops were mobile (not to mention devices like the surface pro 3 which I'm sure you can do plenty of local content creation on). Content creation can definitely be done through web services, not that hard to conceive. I'm not saying that the desktop will be gone within the next decade, I can still see a lot of practical use from it. My thought however, is that as internet connection speeds increase, and cloud computing and storage prices drop, I feel like the behemoth towers might begin to lose out, especially since lots of software that is used in the professional world is extremely expensive to license, it might become more cost effective to license one machine that everyone remotes in to. If that's the case, then the local machine wouldn't need much computing power. Though gaming is a large market, it's nowhere as big as the professional needs of businesses, and as those needs change, I wonder if that would effect the desktop computer enthusiast as companies like Intel and AMD focus on the big spenders.
  9. With the announcement that AMD lost $180 million in the first quarter and the fact that Intel, though still profitable but not as profitable as they used to be, does anyone fear that the age of the desktop might be on it's way out? It seems like with all the mobile devices that are coming out that rely more and more on remote computing on servers, I have to wonder if my desktop computer will be a thing of the past any time soon. If it is, is that a bad thing? Personally, like I'm sure many of us on here, I like knowing it's my computer that's doing the work, that I have control over all of it's operations and not some server. Are my fears justified? Or should I give in to the idea of cloud computing? What are peoples thoughts on this?
  10. Wish I'd known this after I got a new MOBO. Figured it out the hard way when my CPU was running super hot at idle!
  11. Well if you consider a smart phone a small computer, I bricked my phone trying to root it with a root tool designed for a different model of phone. My wife was pretty pissed. Also, when I was younger, my brother and I built our first computer together and we bought a Gigabyte Galaxy II water cooler which wouldn't fit in the case without cramming the side on and it was just a disaster. I had no idea what I was doing so it was more user error than anything but it was always kinking and the tubes weren't near long enough to route it outside of the case, so we ended up scrapping it/ This was probably back in 2007 or so.
  12. And in response, I'm sure that there are some people who don't have at least some wounds from EA but for there are PLENTY of people out there who do. Personally, I hate that I spent a bunch of money to get the BF3 game early to get some of the extra's only to find out I had to pay a butt ton more to get the DLC (addtionally running promos to get people to buy the game later by making the whole BF3 package with all the DLC cost what I had to pay for just the original content but then charging me full price for the DLC). And let's not forget to mention their rushing to get the game out which made the first month or so unplayable for most of the people who paid to get it at release. Furthermore, they make DLC before the game is even released and give you the option to purchase it IN GAME (IE Dragon Age)! That is just greedy! Why not give us the bigger, better game right from the get go?
  13. First off, how is it possible that there are people on a tech forum that haven't seen Star Wars, let alone not be huge fans of the series? (At least the original trilogy) I am quite excited for this game. I loved the previous Battlefront games and I'm sure this will be good. Fortunately, we don't have to worry too much about EA pulling and M.E. 3 error because if you're playing this game, you already know the ending of the story! If you don't and the ending is inconclusive, there should be no bitching, just watch the dang movies. Personally I'm not too upset the clone wars aren't being added to the game, that's just extra programming that goes towards an era of the series that most people don't actually like thanks to the movies. I'm hoping that the lack of Clone Wars content will mean that the original trilogy content will be all that much better! BTW any know if they have recommended settings posted somewhere out there yet? I haven't been able to find any. I want to make sure my rig is capable of running this as best it can.
  14. Thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to do more research on my next build to ensure I have a more stable system without over doing it.
  15. So about a year ago I got in to modding Skyrim and had installed an intense ENB to really kick up the graphics. My old graphics card couldn't handle it so I upgraded to a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 760. At the time I was using a Corsair GS700 PSU. From what I have read (and watched on Techquickie) that should have been more than a enough power. However, when I was playing the game with the ENB going, my computer would freeze up or just shut off. I'd have to power off the PSU with the switch on it to get it to turn back on at all. The computer was running just fine with everything else, it was just when I really cranked it up with the game that it would do this. Well before I knew better about selecting a PSU, I thought the issue was that I didn't have enough wattage to run my beastly machine (it's far from being a beast) so I bought an EVGA G1000 and the issue completely went away. I haven't had a single shutdown with this power supply yet. So my question to the community (or questions) is what could have been causing my power supply to turn off like it was? I still have the PSU and am thinking of using it in a gaming computer for my wife but if it's defective I'd like to know. I should probably mention that this power supply was being used in a system where the MOBO got fried because I was having problems where if I touched the case for any reason, or sometimes the keyboard or mouse, it would shock me and the computer would shut off. So is this PSU worth using in a new build? Also, what would you guys recommend I do with my current PSU? Is it so inefficient that it would be worth taking it out and replacing it? Here's my build when it was shutting down: Gigabyte GA990FXA-UD3 (rev. 3.0) mobo, AMD Phenom II X6 1090t @ 3.2 Ghz, G.SKILL Ripjaw Series 8GB DDR3 Ram, Gigabyte Windforce GTX 760, 1 x WD 320 GB HDD @ 7200 RPM, 2 x 200mm Case fans, 2 x 120 mm case fans, Corsair GS700 PSU. (I should probably also mention, after my first MOBO died, I switched all the components over to a new MOBO and committed a terrible sin, I didn't apply new thermal paste to the cpu after removing the fan to move the cpu to the new board. I just barely (about a month ago) looked into my temps to find I was running at about 60 C while idling and my CPU is rated to 62 C. I have since applied new thermal paste and upgraded to a CM Hyper 212 EVO. So it could have been that it was getting way too hot and shutting down on it's own)
