Nvidia has made some pretty bold claims about the GTX 1080... but are those claims accurate? Let's see how it holds up to our slew of tests!

What exactly are you trying to prove here Prysin? You yourself are the one that always preaches how easy the FX 6300 overclocks. You are also the same person that still recommends that CPU over every other budget CPU, and part of the reason you do so is again, how easy it overclocks. For someone that uses overclocking in his own personal arguments, i find it odd that you are now pointing out the same logic against someone else.

You are right, nobody ever guarantees overclocking on the box. However, to deny factual evidence that is historically accurate would be blatant ignorance. It is a known fact that Maxwell cards, even the 750 and 750 Ti's, have headroom for overclocking. Even if you don't touch the voltage. Even if your using a reference cooler. While nothing is guaranteed, you can still get free performance out of them. If you look at every single Maxwell Overclocking thread on every forum, you will see that even worst case scenarios, offer a pretty decent performance boost.

All GPU companies are VERY tame on their listed specifications. Even their GPU boost numbers are tame. My card boosts quite a bit higher than its advertised boost, and i am using an ITX case and reference GPU. Their stock clock speeds are no different, as they are clocked tame enough to work in even the worst situations (terrible case airflow, hot ambient climates, etc). Nvidia does it.  AMD does the same thing. Same with Intel/AMD CPUs. None of them release their chips at their absolute best potential (Except maybe the FX 9590, which has no room to go anywhere, and is hot as balls out of the box). They do this because its the only way they can guarantee advertised performance to everyone. It's also a contributing factor for why cards overclock different. Sure, the silicon lottery has a lot to do with it, but people often neglect climate, and the case/surrounding components being used with the hardware.

I think when looking at the evidence, saying that Maxwell is a "good overclocking architecture" is an accurate statement. Now, the cards might be good at overclocking, it does not mean that all of them will achieve similar OC's, for the reasons i stated above.

TL:DR? Nothing is ever guaranteed, @Prysin is correct in that aspect. However, we can apply statistics to pretty much anything in this world, and come to a general conclusion on a subject. Be it Maxwell overclocking well, or FX 6300's "easily overclocking" to a certain number. It's time to start putting aside these biased opinions. If 4/5 dentists recommend a toothpaste, it's good toothpaste, right? Well, if 4/5 Maxwell cards are good overclockers, then Maxwell is a good overclocking architecture.

Come to think of it... dentists profit off of poor dental hygiene. What if they say its good, but it's really bad? I am scared now.

    this is BS
    it didnt "cripple" AMD performance
it was an option in the settings for effects which were specifically coded for nvidia GPUs, so obviously turning it on for AMD GPUs would reduce performance more than normal

the entire point of it being an "option" is so that people who have nvidia GPUs can use it, and if you dont have an nvidia GPU DONT FREAKING COMPLAIN ABOUT IT DECREASING YOUR PERFORMANCE because it was not made for your AMD GPU

    seriously, just deal with it
if you want those special effects then buy a GPU from the company that actually has money to give help to developers to effortlessly implement sweet effects

it takes nothing away from AMD, and adds stuff if you have an nvidia GPU

Free education. If there is a course I cannot take in my country, then I can pick a university in any country and they will pay the 4 years for my degree.
Free healthcare. If I have a problem which requires treatment we don't have, I get sent to a country which has it. No charge and immediate family get a free ticket to come with me.

I don't know what AMD's PR is thinking...

Going into DX12, you would think that they'd be on their best behavior. More open to supply samples to the tech reviewers. One thing that irritated me was how an editor at HardOCP summed up the R9 Nano as such, I'm paraphrasing, "I don't buy small cases where I can't fit a full length card, ergo a small card is of no use to me, ergo it's a useless product". I think statements like this leave a sour taste in AMDs mouth right now, not to mention their emphasis on "PAPER" launch.

AMD is struggling, perhaps even near bankruptcy. They can't afford bad press which doesn't use their Graphic cards for their intended purposes. The problem is, this is back firing on them. When they deny review samples... it creates bad press as well.

I'm looking forward to the R9 Nano reviews, curious to know the full function of those two HWS blocks (replacing four ACEs) in their block diagram.

You keep repeating that. Just because you say so, does not make it fact.

QS LCD is not "garbage". It's objectively superior to current traditional LCD TV implementations.

No it's not as good as OLED, but that doesn't make it garbage by default.

A BMW M3 is "better" then a 3 series entry level BMW - but that doesn't make a 3 series BMW garbage.

And, if the cost predictions are true, then it will be one third the price of current OLED sets. It's a stop-gap measure until OLED becomes cheap enough for the average consumer. It's not replacing OLED, it's providing a nice improvement as an intermediary until OLED is actually ready for people to buy at an affordable price.
