kiicki got a reaction from nowison86 in CPU voltage stuck at standard value (Ryzen)
We have all heard about the CPU multiplier getting stuck at x15.5. There are patterns you can do when applying CPU voltage that will "unlock" the CPU multiplier. I have been successful and unsuccessful applying + 0.08125v in offset mode as an example. It depends on the pattern I take. With the "correct" pattern, I can achieve this offset voltage value without the multiplier getting stuck. The problem is bigger than this though.

Even if you achieve to "unlock" the multiplier, you might see that the CPU voltage value you inputted doesn't work. It just doesn't apply. My standard CPU voltage value is 1.23750v. If I apply + 0.08125v, the BIOS will show 1.318v total, which is correct.

Having these values, booting into Windows, multiplier not being stuck, HWMonitor will show me that the max value is still 1.23750v which is the standard value. It has not added the extra + 0.08125v. If launch up Ryzen master application, insert, and apply 1.3v, HWmonitor will in seconds update the max value to 1.3v. This simply means that the CPU voltage value you inputted in the BIOS simply doesn't apply. Even when you think you have worked it out by not getting stuck at x15.5, your CPU voltage might still be at standard value.

This is at least what is happening to me. What I can do is to increase the CPU frequency as high as the standard CPU voltage allows me. 2nd option would be do launch Ryzen master after every boot and apply the OC which I don't really want to do. In my experience, my Ryzen 1600 runs stable at 3.8GHz at standard CPU value (1.23750v) I can even decrease the voltage, but I rather not. Might squeeze out 3.825GHz or 3.85Ghz

RAM is "cheap" anyway. I don't really think 16GB is going overboard. I use FL Studio was my music DAW, but there are some plugins I use that is really RAM heavy, and I will most likely be multitasking too with web browser open. I have also updated my PC specs. Will be going with 1060 6GB

kiicki got a reaction from Mikensan in Newbie when it comes to media server. HELP
I just tested out Serviio, Plex and Kodi streaming from my laptop to my TV. I had no issues with Plex or Serviio. Smooth streaming and video and audio works well. No stuttering, no nothing.
I still have the same problem with Kodi. Picture is freezing up but the file is playing. I don't know what that is about. I think I will just pay for Plex. It just works.
I ran into Plex problems 2 months ago or so and haven't really tried it after that. I just remember that it had some audio issues even though there were no problems with the file. Serviio worked pretty good, but I really like how Plex have categories for "movies" and "Tv-show" and not just a "video" category as Serviio does.

Plex just seems clean and it's working for now at least. Kodi is a nightmare for me when it comes to DLNA.

I have actually no idea what the other guy is going with this. This was meant for a basic user and he is throwing in that Linus is using 16GB just for Chrome, like that has anything to do with it. I don't even use that, and I'm a heavy Chrome user. I guess we are a bit off track so I will search on my own. Thanks to both of you anyway!

kiicki got a reaction from don_svetlio in Buying a laptop tomorrow. Need help to pick one from the list.
    I didn't say 4710HQ. I said  4210H. It's an i5. The Y50 in my country comes in either 4720HQ or 4210H.
It doesn't really matter since I don't like the fact that it only can have 16GB of ram and it comes with only 8GB so I would need to buy a new stick and upgrade it.
I just don't see how that is better than just buy one from the list.
I'm not saying that I need more than 16GB of ram now, but it can be handy in the feature. Maybe 1 year from now. It would be a bummer if I would need to buy a new laptop to upgrade to more than 16GB of Ram. I already got some nice choices that covers all that.

kiicki got a reaction from scottyseng in Why I have to chose Dropbox over Google Drive. Or do I?
I found the problem. Opening a Excel file in Google drive will show you the preview. When selection "Open with Excel" Google drive will make a temp file. The temp file should automatically been deleted after closing Excel.

This only gets deleted if my Excel isn't in a folder for some reason. When I have my Excel in a folder in Google drive, The temp files doesn't get deleted automatically. I had to pause and then resume Google drive so it will sync, so it recognized that I closed Excel.

I have no idea why this only happens when the Excel file is in another folder in Google drive, but doesn't happen if it's not in a folder.

So when opening a Excel file with Google drive will not make new Sheets. It will only make a temp file which should automatically been removed after you close the Excel. I guess it's a minor bug.

Researching a bit, the CPU in your laptop is i7 2XXXQM.

That uses the fcpga988 socket. So you can upgrade to any CPU utilizing that socket.

The highest end CPU you can get is i7-2960XM (Quad core Sandy Bridge at 2.7 Base and 3.7 Turbo Clock). Find the list here from wikipedia.

My M18x is the same generation as yours, I had that power supply issue, I just got dell to fit a new motherboard under warranty and never had an issue again , never broken a power supply in 2 years of owning it (same power supply as you)

I thought they were built similarly, but obviously not, my m18x is like completely metal all over and solidly built, and I have opened it plenty of times
(I did a review on the forum of it not sure if its the same build as yours http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/170701-the-alienware-m18x-review/)

Oh well maybe they are more different than I thought, hopefully sometihng in my suggestions helps

Personally I am selling this soon and getting a GS60 Ghost or Aorus X3 as a replacement, want something smaller and lighter

Come on guys, a Desktop is in NO WAY as portable as a gaming laptop, yes they are not cheap but they are still awesome if the suit the needs of the user

The guy owns and loves his M17x despite the issues he has had, I think if he wants a gaming laptop, there is no problem with that

some of us just like gaming laptops ok
