In any way you need at least 2 12V outlets. I know a 2.5" disk can run off of 5V no problem, however 3.5" needs 12V. An access point usually uses around 8-12V at 1Amp. And you want all this to run off a car battery, how are you going to turn it off when you exit the car? You can't leave it running. I don't have time right now to write a long post, but your idea intrigued me....

Well which parent doesn't want better for their kids and want them to save money for anything that may come up. My parents don't mind spending 50 grand on a car for me but if I told them one of these things with a fan on it (GPU) is around 500CAD, they're gonna flip shit. Gonna flip harder cause I have two.

    Heres what you should do:

Buy a Pentium G3258 + Z97 Motherboard.  Should be about $100, there are deals for them all the time at Microcenter(in-store), Newegg, Frys, Tigerdirect, and NCIX.

Overclock the Pentium as high as it will go using the stock cooler.

When your friend finally has enough money, have him buy an i5.

Any other alternative is going to either bottleneck, or steer you into a dead end.  With the pentium + Z97, you get a much more modern CPU, it is a beast once overclocked, it wont bottleneck, and it gives you an upgrade path.

The 285 is a good card but they shouldn't say 1440p gaming performance.
EDIT: With the amount of memory and small memory bus it would just be egh

He's... close. Cat5e cannot do 10Gbps. Cat6 can up to 55m and Cat6a is the full 100m. At distances shorter than 55m, there is no need for anything above Cat6 if you need 10Gbps. Past 100m, all 3 start degrading in signal, and you need to either switch to coax, or fibre at that point (Neglecting Cat7/Cat7a because they are stupid expensive and hard to find)

both have a maximum length of 100m or 328ft, after this it starts to degrade, cat6 is less acceptable to crosstalk and supports 10gigabit connection over shorter distances while cat5e only supports gigabit connection, so if both cables were run at max capacity i would say that cat6 would be better over a longer distance as it has a leeway as such with the max speed - I think

kinkywink reacted to D3MON in AMD build wants reviewing!
if a company has a board with an 8+2 vrm then thier higher end boards typically use the same vrm, lower end boards might not have a heatsink which means limited overclocking (on par with a heatsinks 4+1) but once you see a giant vrm heatsink tis usually the same vrm design as on higher ones.
in gigabytes case the 970a-ud3p actually has a better vrm design than the 990fx-ud3p ver3 which while being 8+2 only has a small heatsink and can limit max overclocks (4.4ghz+) however this was fixed for ver4 with a HUGE vrm heatsink with a heatpipe going to the chipset heatsink.
i dont know off hand about asus's boards but im guessing its much the same, heck brb just gunna google it..
    http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database
the asus boards including the 990fx chipsets have 6+2 vrms the ONLY exceptions being the sabertooth and ROG boards, the rest dont have 8+2 however they are heatsinked and can still be capable of overclocks up to 4+4ghz safely as an estimate (how much you can overclock depends on how much voltage your chip requires to get to a certain speed and therefore the silicon lottery)
so the m5a97 EVO/PRO looks like it could be one to go with if he goes asus, if he can get a gigabyte 970a-ud3p then id highly recommend it because i have it and its a great overclocking board with an easy to learn bios and is dirt cheap, the msi 970 gaming is also good and has a few other features but is hard to come by in some places.
if he can get a good enough board to support it id get an 8320, if not then a cheaper board with a 6300 is possible and even the aforementioned 6+2 vrm board could get a 6300 to high overclocks because it only has 75% of the power draw of an fx8.
