  1. Finally got around to getting my servers folding again, but 3 of them are still sitting droment at the moment. ( 3 8 core systems with 16gb ram ) Hopefully I can do something about storage though =/ http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/107737-need-some-advice-on-server-storage-solution-on-a-budget/ currently My main NAS in a socket 604 Xeon server with 7 random IDE and SCSI drives in software raid 0... (I've got like 1.2TB of stuff stored on it ) Anyway cheers guys, and I hope I can get my servers up so when I'm not playing about with VM's they can be folding away!
  2. SO I've got a bit of a weird situation.... I have 4 servers (HP Proliant DL380 G5's ) that have no hard drives... I plan to use these servers (8 core 16gb ram) for playing with windows server 2012 and studying/practicing for my MCSA/MCSE in the future... But for now they are just for playing with and learning about the concepts... I bought these servers for $400 and have spend a little over $500 in ram and replacing bad PSU's... Seeing as I'm currently unemployed, and only 17 years old, getting crap tons of money is hard. I have a few laptop drives kicking about, but like 2 or three at most, and I can throw one drive into a server and it will work, but its not really very safe. I wish I could bassically get a giant box of old laptop drives fro really cheap, but that doesn't seem to be that likely... Heck I'd be happy with 80GB drives if I could have like 40 of them... (8 drives per server so 32 drives and 8 spares) I'm not really sure what my best options are... 1tb red WD drive is like $90, or I could go with small SSD's I really don't know... that is if I could even get the money. if anyone has any ideas that would be great, OH and semi related I just passed a million points yesterday!
  3. never had any luck every timne Ive tried to use Linux for anything. If you find the thread I posted when the folding team first started up, my plan was to have every server running linux, but that just didn't work the way I had hoped. It just would not work.
  4. Hello, don't know if anyone remebers me it's been so long since I've made a post. anyway, I was wondering if running an older version of folding at home (one that runs on windows 2k) actually does anything? I'm receiving unit's on my one server that is still rocking 2k, and just wondering if it is actually working. I don't think I deserve a badge seeing as I've been offline for forever. But I'll slowly be getting my workunit's up now that I've got 4 more servers in the new building pretty much been off the internet this past while, and all my folding servers have been offline. LETS FIX THAT! so the important bit, does running an old folding at home client still work, and having a good weekend chaps?
  5. The Asrock board seems like the better board, But I haven't used either personnally so I can't say from expirence. Intel LAN is a deal breaker for me on most motherboards, also good VRM, enough USB ports, sata connectors, all those things you need to consider. But Intel LAN, VRM, and astetics are the things I tend to look out for.
  6. probably My ATI Mach 64 PCI in my pentium 100mhz system, (the mach 32 died)
  7. I7 2600K @4.6ghz, back when I bought it I did ALOT of video editing, hense the 16gb of ram I bought at the time, (maxiumus IV extreme -z) but since I only really game on my main system now, I have an H100i with SP120 quite editions in pull almost not spinning... Temps are not great like that but its quiet.
  8. Socket 478 chips de-lidded make great keychains! I got boxes and boxes of Celerons that were gonna be thrown out in favor of actual P4's... De-lidded them, and sold them to people as keychans for few bucks at lan partys. None of the ones I endcountered were soildered on, just take a blade screwdriver put it on the edge of the lid, give it a wack with something heavy, and it should just pop off.
  9. when I put it into wireless G mode it broadcasts but nothing will connect...
  10. SO for the past however many hours I've been trying to get PF sense to work... I have it setup and LAN is working but I cannot get WIfi to broadcast as an AP... I want my PFsense box to replace my roughter that died... I have an Intel entry level Server motherboard, with a Pentium D 2.66ghz and 2gb ECC ram... I wanted to use a ASUS PCE-53N or something dual band WIFI card but PF sense didn't have the drivers... the only other thing I had was a Dlink net xtreme 552 N PCI card which it did detect... now pretty much by accident I had it broadcasting but the DHCP was messed up so I could get an IP adress... but before I could fix that it stops broadcasting and it won't boradcast anymore -_- for the life of me I cannot fix it... I setup everything the way that they show and Logan shows in his video, but it will not broadcast. it says "no carrier" under status which doesn't mean anything to me... I only barely understand networking in the first place... anyway... I don't know could it be a problem with the card? if so, I might still be able to return the asusu card and if so what at memex could I get that would work?
  11. 2 HIS radeon HD 6970 Icedq MIX cards in crossfire... overclocked to 910mhz core, 1400memory...
  12. well, that should be one of them folding :P and on the note of crap in the server room, I pulled the servers out of the rack to do some work, someone goes and puts card board boxes full of files in the damn rack! who does that? Now I have to figure out who's stuff this is! :P
  13. They are old enough that they are 32bit only systems. The 2.4ghz system is 2 socket 603 Xeons, and the other systems are slot 1 PIII's. I just have the systems on all the time, so I thought if I could help out the folding team in any way shape or form, I certainly would. they will be all running ubuntu 12.04 (I think) with V7 client (again, I think). I am still waiting on a part for the Xeon system that I got on warranty, the other systems are basically functional, But I somebody was storing junk in the server room and I need to get that out of the way so as I can locally access the systems -_-
  14. to answer my own question, yes I guess I can fold on linux... I just need to get the systems up again. I've got the install for I386 linux, do I need to install SMP ontop of that since they are all dual core systems?
