get the 970, then id sell all 3 for 2 980's or a 980ti + some extra money

3 way sli gives more troubles than its worth. scaling is fucking shit after 2 way.. no point in doing 3 way ever..

You are highly mis informed. In GTA V a i5 will limit them. Digital Foundry uses GTA V to show the importance of having a i7 in modern games. 
And no, it's not a waste of money. As the saying goes "if you want to play, you gotta pay"

actually gta 5 runs quite bad on i5s.. on my 4670k (4.4) it maxes cpu cores at 100 percent and stutter is present.. on my 4790k there is way less usage and much less stutter.

Fine is a subjective term. 
There is empirical evidence that proves a i7 is vastly superior to a i5 in most of the games released in the last 6 months to a year. I'm very confident the OP has not decided to never buy another video game. And as such with the importance placed on the CPU by developers as of late having that i7 will facilitate a more enjoyable experience.
