If you scroll down a littlebit on the comments you can see this person says "According to the Swedish review, 165hz increases input lag and ghosting anyway"

Something to keep in mind but don't quote me on it as I'm not sure about it.
If you do decide to go for the ultrawide screen... Wouldn't you possibly have issues with the limited vram on your 970's?
Considering they do have quite a bit more of pixels over the 27" monitor.
 
This is just an assumption of mine and I may be totally wrong.

Quality is fixed since July. And even with a GTX980Ti you will not reach that 165hz in AAA Titles and Asus Displays had Problems in the Beginning too. I like the looks of the pg279q more too, but the xb270hu looks better in person than in videos.

The XB271HU will be replacing the XB270HU, it SHOULD have better QC, but truth be told the PG278Q had even more QC issues than the Acer, so really it would be a "gamble" either way you went. The latest XB270HU batches are Revision 2 and very few seem to be with issue. Also, if you order direct from Acer, they will replace the screen as many times as it takes to get you a perfect one if that matters to you.

First question: you find the pixelation of your current 24" 1080p annoying? Care to elaborate what that means? 
 
Second question: What games do you mostly play? FPS, mmo's, single players? Competitive or casual?

Acer xb270hu is a very good Option too.

I don't think an ultrawide would be all that great for FPS, it would probably be to stretched out looking. Racing games probably will be better though!

What you want... does not exist(yet). 
 
You'll have to decide for a high refresh rate monitor of 27"(Asus PG279q or Acer xb270hu) if you want to go competitive in fps games
OR
go for a the Asus/Acer 34" ultrawide screens for more immersivity at 100Hz(awesome for racing and single player games)
 
Take into account the price difference though, the ultrawides are far more expensive than the 27" monitors.

Then OP should roll back to older drivers 

Use DDU to uninstall your drivers 
 
and the use the second newest WHQL driver 

DDU on Safe Mode > Install the driver before the latest one

If you mean what is the key you press to get into safe mode on boot then the asnwer is simple. There isnt any ;-) they did away with that in Win 10.
 
You can only get to safe mode from boot by A: stick the disc in or B: msconfig from within windows.
