  1. Super excited for the new addition of Vessel and the new opportunities it might afford LMG. Vessel Username is HTiLewis. Favorite vids over there are https://www.vessel.com/videos/Yj4PbcgKjand https://www.vessel.com/videos/JYZEYDYx0. Thanks for the giveaway! Enjoy your vacation, Linus, and best of luck on Vessel!
  2. Thanks for the replies guys. I'd like to eventually go 1440p, but that's not in the cards right now.
  3. Hey guys, So, I've got an msi 670 right now and I think it's time to upgrade. I've got enough of a budget to go with a 970 or stretch up to a 980. I plan on doing some upgrades in a few months, like new monitor and some other things. Here's what I'm running now: 3820 P9x79 Seasonic 860 psu 8gb 1333 Kingston ram 120gb Kingston ssd 500gb hdd If I go with the 970, I can get rid of that ram and get a proper 16gb kit at 1600mhz at the same time. If I go this route, I could also get a second for sli in a few months. I know the LTT team suggests the best single card, but it's a hell of a lot of money to throw at a single computer component going with the 980. What do you guys think? My current Ram setup has bothered me since I got the computer because it's 1333mhz lol. I didn't know any better at the time. Thanks in advance!
  4. Big fan of the way the fans off til it needs cooling. Love that silence! And pun intended.
  5. I just got mine in the mail today, 191. They're fantastic. Super comfy, even on my enormous head, sound good, and seems to have a decent mic. Couldn't be more happy with them. Let us know what you think about them when they come in!
  6. The signatures and the fact it was on a mountain are my favorite things. Really cool! Accidentally hit the submit button twice and can't figure out how to delete the second post lol.
  7. The signatures and the fact it was on a mountain are my favorite things. Really cool!
  8. My monitor is 1680x1050, but planning on at least going to 1080p or higher when the budget allows and 4k is widely adopted so the prices fall on the lower resolution monitors lol.
  9. Does it matter that I wouldn't be going with the same manufacturer? If I went with MSI, for instance, would it jack the whole thing up? Or do I just need to keep the clock speeds and vram relatively similar? Thanks for finding those Coom, I was searching for 670, not gtx 670 (which seemed to make a difference!).
  10. Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't had any real luck finding my particular 670 anywhere. It's the EVGA superclocked 2gb version. My PSU is 860w, so I'm not worried about running it, just can't find them.
  11. I am contemplating getting a new graphics card. In my budget is the green team 770 (I haven't had any experience with the red team). For about $400, I can get an EVGA ACX 770 with 4gb of vram. I'm starting to get into modding skyrim and would love a little more vram to push through the texture packs and such...and future proof for a different monitor. I'm pretty happy with the performance of my 670 and if I could find another 670 that wasn't being sold at some dude's house on craigslist, I'd pick one up and try SLI. I know my improvements in FPS aren't going to be majestic, but does this upgrade make sense? I know I would essentially be buying a beefed up 680.
  12. Thanks for the suggestions guys. It's tough even finding a 670 these days, although I did find some on eBay, but that seems a little sketchy. Great input though, really appreciate it.
  13. lol yea, I tried to spice up what is really another "Just tell me where to spend my money so I don't have to think about it" thread.
  14. There ya go SLS. I've got another 500gb hard drive in the rig that I forgot to add in.
  15. All good suggestions, including the beer and PS4...although I'm not athletic enough for the baseball bat.
  16. Hey guys, The mission: Use $250 to get the most upgrades/renovate this machine. The Subject: P9X79, 3820, 670, 8gb 1333 kingston ram, 128gb ssd, soon to be seasonic 860 PSU, asetek 120mm AIO water cooler, SP120 fans (7), all wrapped in a fractal XL R2. Goal: Use the money to get best bang for the buck with as much style as possible. I have gotten the new PSU because I believe the current one I have is causing issues, although the motherboard could also be the culprit, but don't let that sway your suggestions. If the motherboard ends up still causing issues, I'll obviously replace that first, but I'll know in a few days when it gets here. Thanks and good luck on your mission!
  17. Hey guys, so I have a new power supply coming in in about a week. It's a seasonic 860 I believe. Super excited to get it since my issues aren't getting better. If my issues are not isolated to the power supply (the issues persist after I replace it), I believe the next step is to replace the motherboard. I don't mind doing this because my p9x79 is pretty vanilla. Any boards at around the 250 dollar mark worth looking at? I've decided that an on board power and reset button are kind of a must Lol. I'll update when I get the new PSU in.. I'm hoping it helps. Thanks guys
  18. I've tried this without success. I'm still confused because it hangs when I try to restart or shut the machine down sometimes. It seems to be intermittent, but haven't had the time to really sit down and trouble shoot it any more than I have. I'm planning on buying a nice PSU here soon and give that a whirl. I'm hoping that fixes the issue, but we'll see.
  19. This is why this forum rocks. Great starting point for me. Thanks a bunch
  20. Hey guys, So, I'm working on a little project and the idea is to keep it cheap, feature filled, and play BF4 better than on consoles...next gen to be exact. BF4 is horrible on current gen, to be honest...that's another thread though. Here's my dilemma..I literally know nothing about AMD other than it's the "cheap" counterpart to intel. I understand some chips are APUs and some are straight CPUs, but how do I tell the difference? I basically need a "for dummies" guide for AMD as I think I will have a bit more flexibility with my budget and features going that route. I have specced out an intel machine that would be worth a crap and it's still around 1k worth in hardware. Any help would be appreciated and thought I'd try here before I tread the depths of google looking for answers. Thanks! Lewis PS: this is not a fanboy/intel vs.amd thread.
  21. Basically what I was going to try. Try to do it on the cheap first and go from there. I'm not 100% sold on the 2011 chipset anyways, it's a bit overkill for what I use it for so maybe this will be a good time to switch gears and try 1155 or 1150. Thanks for the input.
  22. Because I'm lazy, I don't know if this has been brought up yet or not. As a small business owner in the States, I am really, really happy for Linus and the rest of the gang (including Slick) for their success. They have been a premium example of what happens when a leap-of-faith turns into a successful business. If Linus or any of the LinusTechTips guys sees this, just know that your hard work is paying off. We all appreciate the entertainment, business, and information you provide for us. Me and my business partner are undergoing the same growing pains you are, or have, going through, although we are in a completely different market. A piece of advice I can give is: never accept rejection, never be complacent, and never think you are safe. A mentor of mine always said,. "Everyone is replaceable." That always stuck with me. Keep doing what you're doing and never settle for mediocre. Much love from Oregon! Lewis!
  23. Not to beat an old horse to (more) death, my buddy actually got my system to run. All he did was unhook the optical drive and it booted right up. I called him a SoB since I spent about 4 months trouble shooting it and he just came in and unplugged a cable. While the machine lives, I've been having issues mimicking my original problem. When I tried to restart the system, it went through the steps...but didn't restart the machine. It went through the window's shut down page and then the monitor went blank...but the computer was still on (the machine still had power and all fans were running as if the machine was still on). I had to turn off the power supply completely off and remove all my RAM to get it to go to bios. Once I got it to bios, I tried to trouble shoot it. Obviously, it wouldn't boot to window's without the boot drive. So I plugged that in along with a single stick of RAM. It booted fine. I installed a second stick of RAM and it booted after that. The optical drive has been unplugged since I ran into the problem again. The only other drive I have installed is a 500GB mechanical that is just for storage. I tried unplugging it, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I originally started out with 4*4gb sticks of ram, but am down to 2*4gb sticks, One of my sticks had an issue when I removed it and a piece came off of it...the part that goes into the MB had a contact break off so I haven't attempted to put it back. I am writing you from the machine in question and it is performing flawlessly. I only notice the problem when I reboot it or restart it. Does the community have any suggestions? I am about to buy an OEM win7 disc and give it a clean install. I reported earlier that I might go to Haswell, but that is just out of my reach price wise. Back when I first bought this machine, I didn't understand the difference in the 2011 chipset. 20/20 being better in the hindsight, I woulda went more mainstream since I do not utilize the socket to its true potential. If you have any suggestions, please hit me up. I am at a loss, but, ultimately, I am happy that I am able to use my machine in some capacity. Thanks in advance! Lewis
  24. Great thread! I am looking at getting a 4770k here soon and this thread has been very educational. I want to see the results after you guys are done with it.
  25. The green in the graphics card looks amazing. Great job!
