WereCat got a reaction from DoctorNick in GPU not sitting in the PCIe Slot correctly
PCIe 4.0 extension for vertical mount... or return the motherboard if possible. Though I would probably argue with MSI that this is a major design flaw and I would try to demand replacement for another model at least.

WereCat reacted to Somerandomtechyboi in Used 3080's scams?
doesnt help that the 4070 has similar performance, draws alot less power, and has 2gb extra vram at ~500$ so a used 3080 would only be a decent deal around 350$
also ebay pricing is pretty meh so look on classifieds sites like fb marketplace

WereCat got a reaction from Eigenvektor in Used 3080's scams?
That's because it's not a good deal.
$450 is the most you should probably pay for used 3080.
They were never supposed to be $1200...

WereCat got a reaction from PDifolco in 4060 Ti 8GB at $350, 4060 Ti 16GB at $430. Finally a deal on the 8GB and possibly the 16GB?
That's just because you maybe don't play games where the Arc GPU struggles. There are still games where it runs really badly and I don't think it's worth the hassle. Especially if you like playing older games.
Though I do like that Intel is improving things constantly and they are now far better than on launch.

WereCat reacted to Eigenvektor in Best linux distro for RAW GAMING performance
Debian is geared towards stability and server use. The software that is included out of the box is old (for that very reason). I've used Debian on my servers for years, but I have no experience using it for gaming.
You're likely better of with something that includes up-to-date software and drivers. Personally, I'm on Manjaro which is fairly cutting edge (not quite bleeding edge like Arch would). It works great for gaming and receives new features pretty early.

WereCat got a reaction from Rahro in Best linux distro for RAW GAMING performance
Any distro with rolling updates is usually the best pick for gaming since you want all the new driver optimizations and features and game compatibility. Does not really matter which specific distro IMO... most of the "gaming" distros just have SW preinstalled which you would have to install yourself like Steam for example.

Discounts look good (though I still wouldn't buy the 7900X3D) but the price drop under $600 for the 7950X3D is nice. it is the lowest we've seen the 7900X3D but we've had the 7800X3D at $349 before and even the 7950X3D at $560, and considering there's the bundle over at microcenter (for the 7800X3D), if you're near one that's the best option

WereCat got a reaction from Eigenvektor in 5W/mK conductivity thermal paste good for a 105W thermal power cpu?
It doesn't matter as there is no standard for thermal conductivity measurements so you can't compare the numbers between brands.

WereCat reacted to Somerandomtechyboi in 5W/mK conductivity thermal paste good for a 105W thermal power cpu?
^^^
thermal conductivity is garbage for thermal pastes and you can only know how well it performs by just testing and comparing it
for a cheap thermal paste i can reccomend id highly reccomend gd007 as it doesnt have the oil seperation issues of gd900 and it should perform similarly to arctic mx4, theres also the new gd-2 but im unsure of how good it is as ive only used it once so far

WereCat reacted to RONOTHAN## in 5W/mK conductivity thermal paste good for a 105W thermal power cpu?
It can be. Again, this depends more on the specific paste than anything, you can't just look at a spec sheet and ingredients list to figure out what it's made of.

WereCat reacted to Doobeedoo in IPS vs VA Panel
It's transition time between pixels changing color, it's not as fast in LCD monitors enough for that to be done perfectly between refresh cycles, thus blur.

WereCat got a reaction from Blasty Blosty in Fire Ant infested thermal paste
When you run ANTutu benchmark in an Android VM on a PC.

WereCat got a reaction from filpo in IPS vs VA Panel
The only good VA panels are probably just on Samsung Odyssey monitors and tend to be even faster than most IPS... They still don't have nearly as good viewing angles as IPS. Otherwise just stick to IPS.

WereCat reacted to leadeater in Omdia has calculated the cost of components for the Apple Vision Pro
That will be really difficult to know, mainly since I doubt Apple wants anyone to know, commercially sensitive information yada yada.
What we do know is Apple's Gross Margin is ~45% and their Operating Margin is ~30%, operating margin includes things like R&D but both are overall business metrics not a per specific product like the Vision Pro. Being a new product of a new type gross margin on the product is going to be higher than a MacBook for example since way more R&D cost is involved for the Vision Pro comparatively. that'll go down each generation presumably but could stay relatively high for the first through third 🤷♂️
That said I doubt the ~$1500 is all that accurate. This product requires all new molds and tooling, entirely new manufacturing all of which is actually damn expensive. Like many hundreds of thousands for each new mold alone, not including the original product design just the manufacturing design and engineering required to make the part.
P.S. Nvidia's Gross Margin is ~73% and Operating Margin ~49%, AMD ~47%/~5% respectively.

WereCat got a reaction from Needfuldoer in Looking for a EGPU
And apparently it must be the full fat 40Gbps USB4 not the nerfed 20Gbps USB4.
-
WereCat reacted to Needfuldoer in Looking for a EGPU
You need USB 4 or Thunderbolt to use an external GPU. USB 3.2 doesn't support PCIe tunneling.

If you have an IDENTICAL system to someone else there: possibly. GENERALLY, the answer is no. Not even close.
