Haven't touched any Intel laptop in years but I remember this was possible with the Intel XTU for CPU undervolting/overclocking. Is that not an option anymore?

Given that windows is ~free and is where where all my stuff is, it seems fine. I haven't found it to be ad riddled, nor slow nor laggy.
That being said, I also have quite a few *nix machines in my life.

But you want the real answer? It's switching costs. It's always switching costs. And you will always always always underestimate how monumental those costs are.

Well, mine is using more, I keep number of things in tray running. But really? Are we counting bytes of memory like RAM is an issue now? I'm not using my PC that I worry how many tabs I can open man. You'd have 16-32GB nowdays.
Yes I know, some don't want to mess with registry.

Because not everything works on Linux or it works better on Windows than on Linux or because people have issues on Linux they don't know how to solve and don't have time or energy or both to deal with it and learn new OS so that they can do what can they do right now without the hassle.

I don't remember exactly but it was either the 730 or the ones before. And I think they did not do a full release but there should be some going around.
They are not minimal. The X3D CPUs can't really handle voltage increases. As I said, even on stock 1.25V the CPU already can hit over 90C even with a 360mm AIO, increasing voltage does not help at all.
Also, the CPU is power limited, you will actually hurt the performance by increasing voltage.
Also, "undervolting" by setting the Curve Optimizer offset reduces the voltage during load and increases the clocks and performance because the CPU is no longer hitting the power limit and because it's running cooler so it maintains higher clocks easier.

I also think the bug that allows the voltage to be controlled is for the 7000 series not the 5000 series. Also, der8auer instantly killed his 7000 X3D CPU on LN2 by just applying 1.55V in the BIOS, there was no load on the CPU and it was on LN2. This voltage is nothing too crazy for the non-X3D CPUs, especially on LN2.

Still, the voltage is pointless without multiplier control and BCLK cant be pushed far enough for that to matter anyways.

It's unnecessary hassle that is irrelevant outside of chasing benchmarking scores. If you have PCIe 4 capable system you may as well just use it. You get far more performance from tweaking your DRAM than from BCLK overclocking a 5800X3D. You need to be quite a bit lucky to get more than 104MHz BCLK for it to be worth it as 4% increase is nothing of significance for daily use. That's why I keep saying this is not relevant in any way to this topic.
Also it's not just the case of having PCIe but of how many devices you have connected. If you have 5 drives it's way more difficult to push BCLK than when you have just one for example.

No, I just think your methodology of overclocking by brute forcing voltage is really bad. Often increasing voltage above certain point may result in worse stability due to thermal leakage, power limits or other factors. If increasing voltage is what makes OC good then we would have many professional overclockers.

not finished,  timelines, lazy ass devs that think they know everything better, greedy publishers and shareholders.

The REAL reason:  people buy it anyway,  no matter how buggy it is because they saw it "on youtube".

WereCat got a reaction from Top Stabber in AMD Ryzen™ 7 3700X Still Good?
It will be faster than Ryzen 5 5600 in multi-threaded but slower in single-threaded performance so at most it should cost the same as a new Ryzen 5 5600 (new vs new) ideally between Ryzen 5 5500 and 5600 price since it's an older CPU now.
    For used 3700X I wouldn't pay more than for a new Ryzen 5 5500.

If you're using ASUS then just hit F9 in BIOS and search for it.
It's a memory encryption for virtualisation and disabling it helps with performance and should help with the "core isolation" as this should disable it too if I remember correctly.

Regarding virtualisation setting in BIOS, I always forget what it's called so you'll have to google it.

WereCat got a reaction from starsmine in In a rut? Reduce VRAM! RTX 3050 6GB launching with a rumoured MSRP of $180 with 96 bit bus
Basically, if you don't care about external power get RX 6600 for almost the same price and have around 60%+ more performance (it still even beats the regular RTX 3050 8GB which sells for way more than a RX 6600).

If you need a card with no external power this is a bit more complicated as this card may actually be compelling at that point somewhat.
Total system usage vs RX 6600 was at around 60W-70W lower with the 3050 6GB being around 190W total system usage and RX 6600 around 250W (with their config).

This card makes RX 6500 XT 4GB (which is absolutely terrible) and 8GB even more obsolete than it was until now at least which IMO is a good thing since that card does not even have any HW encoders and has some quirky requirements like the need of PCI-e 4.0 for it to perform properly which makes little sense as a budget card.

Regarding the 8000 series APU discussion before. You can pair this card with a Ryzen 5 7500f and it will cost almost the same as a Ryzen 7 8700G alone while offering significantly more GPU performance and some hit to multi-core CPU performance while not having any of the PCI-e 4.0 lane count limitations that come with the 8000 series APUs.

WereCat got a reaction from RevGAM in 13900k with 420mm Arctic Liquid cooler II
Yes, the issue is the Intel ILM causing issues with fully contacting the cooler plate due to how it's designed. It's not the issue of the cooler. You can buy contact frames like this one https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermalright-lga1700-bcf-contact-frame to help with that.

The Liquid Freezer III actually comes with a mandatory contact frame for the LGA 1700 socket to fix this issue.

Yes, there will be a bottleneck. There will always be a bottleneck. Sometimes the CPU will be the bottleneck, sometimes the GPU will be the bottleneck, and sometimes something else will be the bottleneck.

If what you are really asking is "will there be such a severe bottleneck that I should spend less money on the GPU?" I would say "no, it's a fine pairing."

WereCat reacted to RONOTHAN## in Help me to understand. People upgrading their GPU but still using their 10 YO CPU
As far as I've seen, that really isn't that common anymore. There was a mindset back then that the CPU really didn't matter for gaming performance, especially since basically any quad core i7 would perform fairly similarly to each other once you had an overclock on it. Look at X58 setups for instance, the people who bought them ran them for 6-7 years without feeling a need to upgrade because there just wasn't a need for it. Nowadays though, games are using a ton of CPU power and therefore you really do need an upgrade.

I'm sure there are still some people out there that still live by that older mindset of any CPU made within the last 10 years is probably OK for a mid to top range GPU, but I'm pretty certain that it's more rare than you make it out to be.
