I've noticed an unusual amount of people on the forum buy into the PewDiePie racism narratives, which is pretty astonishing given the tech and social media awareness of the general user of this forum

This is one of those cases where I have to vehemently disagree with Sterling.

I agree that Steam should clean up its marketplace, specifically from trash alongside games really just designed from the ground-up to incite hatred. A hands-off approach has inherent risks.

However, I disagree that Epic is going to pose much of a risk. The only thing Valve has done in response is basically tweaking their revenue split based on the number of copies sold, where the cut goes down to as low as 20% if you exceed a certain revenue target.

What makes or breaks a platform is not just the number of games it has but also the number of users. Epic can dream all day long, but tactics like these aren’t going to result in a mass exodus of users from Steam, not when there is no good reason for users to try the platform out. The multiple criticisms, specifically on how spartan the platform is, doesn’t help.

Strangling the marketplace like this is detrimental to the overall market and if anything, is more harmful to smaller players like GoG than Steam.

On the flip side, Microsoft, previously (rightfully) criticized for selling their games only on the Microsoft Store, now sells the Master Chief Collection on Steam alongside their own store.

The real game is trying to space out your hardware changes so that Origin doesn't lock you out of your account for 24 hours.

Considering this game was heavily used to promote the Nvidia cards and Nvidia was even involved with it since one of the first trailers of the game I would say that it's probably not a low effort implementation.

It's a more efficient upscaling system that they can push to the fixed-function hardware in the GPU that would otherwise not be used. It's interesting, but it's still a solution in search of a problem.

"Nvidia's crypto problem is bigger than it admits, an RBC analyst says after crunching the numbers."

If so, this would give huge fodder to the lawsuit Nvidia's investors have brought against the company for its alleged misrepresentation to them of the company's future prospects:

Carclis got a reaction from Belgarathian in Nvidia cuts revenue projections by $500m
He claimed that cryptocurrency was basically dead in the July earnings call and that was the reason for poor gaming market performance since the mining craze had driven up GPU prices. Then in the following earnings call in November he claimed that gaming market performance was still down because of the "crypto hangover" which had resulted in prices still remaining high, but he also remarked that demand for Turing products was "fantastic". Now we're hearing that just a little bit out from their next earnings call they're lowering projections citing that there is no problem with their inventory and it's depleting in line with their predictions, but gaming product demand and primarily Turing products are experiencing demand that is below expectations, even after prices had come down.

What that says to me is that Nvidia has failed to read the market in a significant number of areas; something I find difficult to believe given how long they have been in the industry, or they lied in one or multiple of their prior statements.

They mentioned mid-range specifically as being the one that is in oversupply, but clearing out as expected (they didn't say Chinese inventory as far as I can tell). They also mentioned that Chinese market is performing lower than expected due to poor economic conditions. So it sounds like cryptocurrency is only mentioned to state that it's responsible for the mid-range oversupply but not the current poor performance compared to projections. Given that the Turing is cited as performing poorly across the board it sounds like they're suggesting that everybody who would have purchased that ended up purchasing Pascal cards, which would have resulted in the inventory levels clearing as expected.

Carclis reacted to Belgarathian in Nvidia cuts revenue projections by $500m
Nvidia has cut revenue projections for quarter 4 of this financial year by $500m stating that the reason for the recast of projected revenue is slower sales in the Chinese gaming market and excess mid-range inventory left over from the crypto boom slowing the sales of Turing GPUs.

So to put it in Jensen's own words, "underwhelming... the performance is lousy and there's nothing new".

Nvidia should have expected this outcome when consumer pricing for the new Turing architecture took such a large leap that supply and demand relationship is elastic (as it's a luxury good), and the performance benefit in most cases isn't significantly better to justify the price increase unless ray tracing gives you wet dreams. I mean that's economics 101.

After the announcement Nvidia shares predictably dropped ~13.5% in value closing out the 28th Jan 19 with a market cap of $84b down 44% since Oct 2nd, 2018.

That's the thing though. Apple has made its own bed and now has to lay in it. Their devices are hard to repair for both third parties and their own staff and that's why they outsource it in the first place. And because they made the things so damn hard to work on they aren't repaired properly by almost anybody, even when done by Apple officially. The irony is that Apple complains that repair quality is substandard when coming from a third party and their actions to restrict the abilities for those that are not certified repairers have resulted in their own repairs becoming substandard. This same move has also resulted in those third party repairers that were great at it to begin with becoming better than Apple since they were competent to begin with.

I'm not sure I follow you. So because everybody does something that is unethical/illegal It's perfectly fine since everybody is going to be just as screwed as the next person? The thing is Apple is probably the most profitable company in the world, or at least extremely high up there and they have become the company to follow. Other companies tend to do what the most successful company does, and if Apple can get away with shit working conditions in the U.S. and giving zero fucks about whether a refurbished product is on the verge of failing due to half-assed diagnosis because their consumers are happy to accept it, then everybody else has to put up with other companies following that trend.

As far as I'm concerned Apple can continue to operate in the way that it does, but not if it wants to claim to be an ethical company as it does as part of the marketing. And if Apple wants to block third party repairs then it shouldn't be worse at repairing its own products than the companies that are supposedly providing repairs of "questionable standards".

That's all well and good but businesses aren't people and whether or not they actually benefit anybody other than the shareholders or ruin the lives of everybody else is of zero importance to them. Those are the exact reasons that we regulate them in the first place. Now I'm not saying that we need to go all out and regulate everything but a few key issues such as employees skipping lunch breaks and working 12 hour shifts are unspoken rules that were not disclosed when the job was advertised. I'm not 100% positive if it's illegal to not give your employees breaks in the U.S. but it certainly is here. Those are two things that certainly deserve some looking into, and at the very least Apple should be held accountable for their deceptive claims instead of being able to get away with boasting about how they're doing so much to improve the standard of living all around the world.
The other point which nobody has touched on yet was actually supposed to be the focus of this news post and that's regarding the quality standards that refurbished products are held to. Considering that is ultimately the issue that directly affects the consumer I'd expect a great deal of concern over the fact that Apple themselves are choosing to outsource their repairs and in such a way that reduces the quality to such an extent that the people doing it are embarrassed by it. Not to mention the fact that Apple themselves go to great lengths to stomp out competing repair shops citing "quality concerns". Quite ironic I'd say.

Landmass really does not matter, population density and spread matters more. It's all about proportion not size, in a standard size small island but with only 2 people who live on opposite sides of that island the per household connection cost would be vastly more than any town, state, country etc.

Land area NZ is similar to Oregon but we have a bit more population. Unlike Oregon which is a nice square NZ is long and narrow and comprised of two main islands, if I were an ISP I'd rather deal with Oregon than NZ land wise.

Many people like to talk about how the free market is best but NZ's government sponsored plan to roll out high speed internet to almost the entire country is going pretty well. Compare it to the US where a handful of companies have their own monopolies and refuse to upgrade the infrastructure, despite having received tax breaks for that specific purpose.

NZ is a challenging environment to roll out this kind of infrastructure because of the low population. Economies of scale don't really kick in with such a spread out population. It's good to see the government continuing to look to the future and provide people with the benefits high speed internet can provide.

yes, but the way they make is really the point, you don't here the same issues by other companies who do repair, it's not as closed off or expensive, do they have a time restriction, well yeah, but you're bound to get a good repair, the point of the video is that in apple, you're really not treated properly/your product is not really treated as anything special, making things worse by having everything soldered to motherboard only increased the cost if you have to replace one part, other phone manufacturers simply do not replace your whole mother board just because they didn't have time to ask for your password, and add to the fact apple neither sells parts or give parts before hand to Apple certified owners and lock you out if you do go to a 3rd party repair even though you replaced parts from another apple phone. nothing apple does is pro consumer in the case of customer service. on the other hand samsung sells each and every parts on their own website. and costs 30 bucks to replace a shattered back panel which is costly by design at apple service. so if you are really paying for their support, they should atleast treat your device properly.
