First computer my family had, when I was a wee lad, had Windows 95.  Had a cheap eMachines computer that I believe had XP.  It died a quick death :D.  My old cheap laptop that lasted forever has Windows 7.  On my first build I use Linux Mint.  Mint is my favorite so far.

IreMinMon got a reaction from Unhelpful in Is it possible to build a pc in one console that can run two separate gaming rigs?
Why would anyone need that? I mean it's fun thing to do, but in the end you need:

    -twice the amount of GPUs
-almost triple the amount of CPU power
    -more storage

That alone almost makes up for an additional PC, one you could use as your console. Like, install SteamOS. So much advantages.

EDIT: The CPU choice is really always the problem, because ending up with less than 4 CPU cores on single VM bottlenecks GPUs. Provided you want to stream you will end up needing a CPU that costs more than additional rig.

People telling you to start with Arch are trolls. You won't be getting past disk partitioning if you decide to install Arch before trying out other Linux distros. You'll say "fuck this" and go.

My recommendations to start with would be 1- Mint 2- Debian 3- Ubuntu, if you prefer Arch branch over the Debian branch for some reason (package manager maybe?) it would probably be wise to start with Manjaro.

People dog them so much, but what do you guys really think?

Personally OSX, especially Capitan and the newer versions, are a pleasure to use, although I still love the Windows 10 experience and the like. The only drawback in my opinion is lack of support on certain programs from the Internet, stuff like Dolphin Emulator, many certain Steam games, and those kinda things (not even sure if Dolphin is supported, just using as an example).

I think the aesthetics are great. If the newest MacBook actually had some vents, I would consider getting it and BootCamping it and using as a daily driver (however my mileage may vary ). But the design just has drawbacks, and I don't like spending a crap ton on adapters.

What do you guys honestly think about Mac computers (excluding the Mac Pro). I know this has probably been a thread before, but what actually do you guys think?

It's a debian based OS, you can access the terminal like normal and install anything you could install on a Debian system.

So yes you can install OwnCloud on steamOS

Posting this from Linux Mint laptop, you should be fine with drivers. You should check with the motherboard vendor for the sexy features, but things like hot-swappable SATA drives should, if anywhere, work on Linux, since most of the servers are linux based.

I didn't quite like Linux Mint at first. My advice for the newcomer would be - when you're doing the first fresh install - don't install everything. The reason I today still don't like Linux Mint too much is that it comes pretty bloated. Avoid unnecessary software, all you really need to start is the kernel and package manager. And yeah, use the graphical software manager / driver manager / update manager. They are actually pretty cool. Update manager has been causing me some issues lately, but driver manager works great. Got myself installed the nvidia driver with the driver manager, now it allows me to completely turn off the GPU =).

As I said, try with minimalist approach in the beginning, so you can build the OS that you would actually like. I installed everything they were offering and it isn't as cool. Firefox comes with about 36 pre-installed plugins (really, wtf Mint??!). There are 2 media players (VLC and Amarok, you don't want Amarok) for some reason. Some of this crap comes quite difficult to uninstall, but everything  you don't install during the OS install can be later found on the repositories, and is as simple to install as to click "install". Seriously, graphical interface is pretty much google store - like..

Thunderbird. If you use Gmail as provider, you can add contact sync and calendar to Thunderbird client. Calendar requires bit more work but once done.... Just WIN.

Don't listen to them! Use Mozilla Thunderbird, make it store your emails locally on the drive, best solution. Supports encryption (enigmail plugin  +GNU PG). Completely free and open-source. You still do need a provider though, gmail should be fine, unless you've concerns about Google (it does indeed read through all your emails). Encrypting your e-mails however won't allow Google to see s**t.

Running Linux and Windows on separate drives is good. It's been well known that Windows will cause issues with dual boot one way or the other. I had a trillion problems installing Linux on my laptop, windows boot manager will still always run over my GRUB2. I have to manually select bootloader on startup. Expect problems when trying to set up dual boot machine. I've had the same kind of problems when I originally attempted to set up dual boot. It took me weeks and hell alot of nerves.

Why learn Linux? Because, quite simply, it is the future.

I truly believe that Linus and Slick, being sources of knowledge for many in the tech/PC community, should feel not only obligated but that they owe it to them selves and to their audience to start learning Linux. Ignorance will only hold back what is to come. I know LMG is a busy crew and I don't think they're being intentionally ignorant, but rather I don't think they realize the scope and potential of what they're ignoring.

Regardless, the more of us (the members of the community) delve into the world of Linux, the better it will get.

Thus, I'll keep on advocating for Linux. Check out the video from Wendell from TekSyndicate. This is just the beginning of a whole video series (they've devoted a YT channel specifically for it) on Linux. He'll be exploring the ins and outs, how to install, what you can do with it, how to diagnose and fix problems, and much more.

I also made the mistake to start doing computer stuff for my friends and family. Everyone i've ever helped now thinks that i'm their personal support guy for everything. My top 5:
    5)
Friend bought a SSD and installed it (he's not that of a noob). Still asked me why it wasn't reading with 450MB/s as promised, so i asked him if he used the fast sata-port on his board (labeled blue). He told me that he used the blue one, so i drove over to him, just to see that be had his HDD in the fast port and his SSD in the slow one.
    4)
My mother told me that she wants a new computer, so i asked her if i should build her one. She said no and went to "Saturn" (like best-buy but in germany) and got a complete system there. She payed about 800$ for a system with an i3, a gtx 540, 4 gigs of ram and 500 gigs of harddrive space....
    3)
A friend of mine made a steam account with a fake e-mail-adress. After buying 3 games with his pay-pal-account for ~120$ he restarted his computer, just to realize that he couldn't play the games because his mail was fake and he couldn't get into his steam-account anymore.
    2)
After i built a computer for a friend of mine, he started complaining about the system bluescreening all the time. While checking his rig, i realized that he had removed the cpu-cooler (out of curiousity) and cleaned off the thermal paste because he thought it was dirty. So obviously his cpu got too hot and made his pc crash every time he booted up. Because he tried to boot up his system uncountable times, his 300$ i7 was broken too. Good job on that.
    1)
My ex-girlfriend got a macbook pro. She turned it on for the first time and played around a while, after about 10 minutes she asked me where the Internet Explorer is because she wanted to surf the interwebz. I lol'd.

You can always get a 5$ adapter, I'd recommend DVI to VGA adapter since these are both quite robust ports/connectors, but as the guys said before, if the motherboard supports VGA you have nothing to worry.
