Let's put it this way. There exist only three games that I feel I have gotten my money's worth from. Games that I have played past whatever single-player they may or may not have had and then moved on to play the multiplayer on a daily basis for years on end. However incomplete it may be, SC is one of those games.

Also, as Spoon pointed out above, I have gained real actual friends in this community. Not the "hey how about a raid on Saturday" online kind of friends, but the "Hey, I'd like to invite you to my wedding" kind.

    So there's that.

There are those of us who are SC fans and actually agree that it  has a terrible and unsustainable business model.

Yet you've managed to stretch this pointless thread to three pages now by baiting people who don't. I shudder to imagine what you would do to a subject that you DO care about. ?

No it's not a scam, the active community wanted it extended and this is the result, yes its frustrating having to wait but I played Kingdom Come and TBH the 4yrs wasn't long enough, I'm happy to wait for a game if its well done.

$65 for 2 games does seem expensive but they changed this in 2015 iirc, I originally paid £27 for the complete package at the time the dog fighting module came out.

Paying bug testers? Not really, that's the evocati, of which some have ended up working for CIG.

Cult? Aren't you part of the PCMR?

Sunk cost/time falicy? Not really, I increased my pledge after I felt I hadn't paid the devs enough for the time spent in arena commander, the reason I've spent that much time? The people on here are awesome, we've branched out in other games and fingers crossed I'm off to different parts of the world at some point to meet a few of them. Best $100 spent for that reason alone.

But this is what I usually expect from people that haven't done the research and only read the title of every article of SC, that and a dude that is trying to justify a purchase of a Ferrari and a night at a brothel. It's why the SC LTT community moved away from the forums.

Remember that much of the performance issues are server side at the moment, so irrespective if your spec it'll hit a limit that's not within your control if the server you are on is under heavy load. It's not going to be like this forever but has been for quite some time.

16GB or slightly less is fine, OS + game loading for most people peaks around 11GB and that's in fairly unoptimised conditions,.

@kiwibacon Your setup is more than enough to play star citizen at highest settings. The current alpha has performance issues that stem from bugs, memory leaks, server-side issues and lack of optimization... since it's an alpha.

You may experience stuttering, framerate drops and occasional memory overloads, but those are not your system's fault. We are alpha testers... we may occasionally have fun in SC, but our main purpose is to point these things out and provide telemetry data so they can be fixed.

In combat you want to be looking away from your HUD as little as possible, so a good HOTAS or dual stick scheme with copious amounts of buttons and axes is already pretty crucial. Fumbling around with your cockpit, virtual or otherwise, while being shot at, is the surest way to get dead fast.

Outside of combat, the companion virtual cockpit apps for handheld platforms that have been planned will be very helpful I presume. But I wouldn't count on them being even considered past the bare concept phase any time soon.

If you want a taste, I suggest you try the Roccat Power Grid app. There are a number of grids for Star Citizen and some are very good and useful. Problem is that the game controls change so rapidly with every patch that they usually lag behind and don't offer all available functions. You can make your own grids for PG, tho... if you are so inclined.

    @DtrollMC

I'd say it's the TV. The resolution itself it common enough, but 1080i i is a different scan type than 1080p. I wouldn't be surprised if the devs haven't even began optimizing for that, if they ever would... some PC games get released without ever being compatible with interlaced (i) scanning.

I would suggest checking your TV's serrings to see if you can coerce it to display the game in 1080p instead of i. If I'm right, that should fix it. If the TV doesn't have that option, then a proper monitor would do the trick.

Well can you be a bit more specific? Was he right bout what exactly?

Was he right about his initial claim during his first falling out with Chris Roberts, that Star Citizen will never be anything more than the hangar module and a bunch of pretty videos? Well no, I guess he wasn't.

Was he right about it all being a complete scam, designed only to take our money and go buy an island somewhere? Eeeeh, I suppose that would make them the stupidest scammers in history, because they've been spending all that money into making a game instead. Their tax returns are publicly accessible.

Was he right when he said  that 2.0 is "nothing but a tech demo video" and we would never be able to do anything but dogfoghting in arena commander? I guess he was wrong on that one too.

Was he right 2 years ago when he said they are completely out of money and he has it "on good authority" that they will be filing for bankrupcy within a month? No, I suppose he miscalculated that one a teeny bit too.

Was he right about procedurally generated real-size planets not being a viable concept and that they would never be able to make anything like that? Eh... no.

In all seriousness, tho. Star Citizen has development problems. It is an extremely ambitious project. They have had to readjust the scale of it several times, from the initial 2 million dollar stretch goal. Have they bitten more than they can chew? It's still possible, I don't believe so myself, but I admit that it remains to be seen.

That said, don't make the mistake of paying much attention to Derek Smart. The man has mental problems. He is salty that his own game "Line of Defense" did not receive the same backing and has been in perpetual development longer than Star Citizen. Jealousy over this drove the man to spend unhealthy amounts of his time stalking the Star Citizen project, instead of pursuing his own. It is a sad story. I don't really want to hate on him too much, I rather feel pity for the man.

Anywhoo, OP I noticed you mentioned that you have played the Star Citizen alpha. So I take it you know what it offers. Not much yet, admittedly. But let me leave you with some footage from Derek Smart's game 'Line Of Defense' which, by his own claim, is being "ripped off" by Star Citizen. Maybe you'll enjoy playing it. It's still in early access. ;-p

Afaik, lumberyard makes it easier to work with higher poly models and higher number of LODs and - most importantly for SC - larger environments. Cryengine was developed with classic sky boxes in mind, nobody expected it to be used for open-world stuff. Especially not on this scale! You could fit all crysis levels ever made, along with their skyboxes into the current SC Alpha's Stanton system a million times over and have room to spare.

But the biggest differences are in the networking and close integration with AWS, which is also the reason they moved to AWS from google cloud.

I’d rather have a game delayed a few years (especially considering the massive scope of star citizen), rather than having an half-completed game.

I can see the frustration of people who backed it etc. (I don’t even own it as I am waiting for more content, might actually buy it with 3.0 released), but people would even be more frustrated if it becomes NMS v2.

Well if you think of it in those terms, of course it's gonna be crap.

But do me a favor and imagine something for me. Imagine Star Citizen was not "selling ships", but developing a game by crowd funding. Imagine that they didn't have ANY corporate investors and instead, set a number of crowd funding pledge tiers, tied to different amounts of money. Imagine you could, if you liked the project, pick the amount of money that is comfortable for you and donate that amount in support of the project's completion, because that's how crowd funding works, right? Now imagine that in exchange for your pledge, you got a ship or piece of other in-game hardware, that you could use in the alpha and get to keep once the game is finished... again, because that is how crowd funding works, right?

Would you be opposed to this entirely hypothetical system?

Squadron 42 demo was posted, personally I recommend watching the whole thing then listening to the directors commentary as they address a lot of issues I had with the gameplay.
Personally I thought the acting and scripting was 10/10. Best scam ever.

After a stressful year and agreeing with Corwin, I have handed ownership of the Discord Channel to him. He was already running 90% of it and it allows me to focus on more of the planning Saturday meet ups and more org stuff. If your not already on the chat join here:

We finally hit the 3000 member mark, not bad for an org that isn't game related that refused to push up numbers by aggressive invitation.

Squadrons are being reassessed for roles in game, more on that next year.

    Battle EXtravaganza 3.0
BEX 3.0 will be making a come back, it will involve fleet and squadron leaders fighting over different locations of the PU. Seperate thread to follow on that. This will also be the application that Code Wars will be creating

    The Council
The Council will be established in 3.0 soon, not all roles will be available at the start as there is no trading nor will we be taxing until orgs 2.0/3.0 kicks in, however we will be testing the waters, once prepped and agreed with the High Council we will open to elections.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.
