  1. What is the best (cheapest and easiest to deal with) place to purchase .com domain names WITHOUT included web hosting? I have had my own servers at home for a while now so I'm not interested in any web hosting plan, I just want to be able buy domain names that I can easily transfer to my own private servers. Thanks
  2. Have you considered getting some Plastidip and painting your case to match your board? Its not too expensive to get a few cans of plastidip and if you don't like the result then you can peel it off unlike normal paint. If you have already picked out a motherboard you like then i don't think its a good idea to change it for a worse one just for the looks as you'll probably regret it later.
  3. Can you get into your BIOS at all? This happened to me a few times and it was a problem with the SATA cable connecting to my SSD, so try to check if your boot drive is showing up correctly in the BIOS
  4. After a power-cut when the power returns, some PCs can restart/turn on by themselves
  5. I haven't had enough experience with a bunch of VPNs to tell you what is definitely the best one, but you right now you can get 6 months of CyberGhost Premium for free, just follow there instructions: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/228041-cyberghost-vpn-6-month-free-premium-license/#entry3122199
  6. What is the best PSU in terms of reliability, silence and efficiency that is maximum 150mm long and is preferably between 550W and 800W? Price doesn't really matter. Thanks
  7. I thought it would be at 2AM on friday morning (UK Time) as its at 6PM PDT on the 18th, so add 8 hours to that to get it in terms of GMT (UK) would make it 2AM on the 19th so Friday. (Think of the WAN show, to Linus that's on a Friday afternoon but for us in the UK that's in the early hours of Saturday ) PS: On the last WAN show Slick said that they are doing the WAN show straight after it ends so that only makes sense if its at the time I think it will be as that way the next WAN show will be very early on Saturday (UK time) like usual.
  8. If there is already an internet connection going into your room provided by your university, then why are you using another router to connect to that? Surely having 2 routers (counting the university's main router) isn't the right solution (unless you're aiming to set up a demilitarized zone or something) as it will complicate things. Try changing the settings on your router to make it act like just a network switch (or just buy a cheap network switch) then plug both your university provided internet connection and your devices into that.
  9. If you have an older/ unused PC then watch this video and try to build your own router.
  10. I think Hotspot Shield has a 30 day trial of its "Elite" VPN service, so you get to try everthing then after 30 days it just goes back down to the standard free version unless you pay, they also have Hotspot shield mobile apps so you can install VPN on your tablet/phone. VPNs are especially good on phones as they can lower your overall data usage so you can make the most of your data allowance on your network.
  11. My ISP doesn't mess around too much with my traffic so I rarely use a VPN, so while I understand how this works on a networking level, I'm sorry but I cannot help you with specific VPN related problems, as I don't have much experience. As for which VPN is best, I've heard a lot of good things from Logan at Tek Syndicate about Private Internet Access ( https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ ) , I'd trust his opinion on this and I know Hotspot Shield ( http://www.hotspotshield.com/ ) used to sponsor Linus at one point. So I'd try out those two.
  12. Even though it should be impossible to detect based on the packets, some sites know what range of IPs common VPN services use and if you connect from one of those IPs they can tell you are using as VPN. For example if a website host does some research and finds out that "VPN Service A" leases every IP between 123.123.123.100 to 123.123.123.110 and you connect to a website and your IP is 123.123.123.105 for example, then they can figure out that you are using "VPN Service A" to connect. I guess the best thing I could suggest is that you use a less well known VPN, but that might lead to a worse experience overall so I'm not sure what you could do. Sorry I can't give a specific solution but I hope my aswer was somewhat helpful
  13. If you can find it for cheap, less than 20 or so dollars then I think you should buy windows 8.1. As some people have already pointed out it would mean getting a free upgrade to windows 9 when that comes out and at one point you will have to upgrade anyway so if its cheap then go for it now
