  1. Okay I'll rephrase, what GPU to pair with Core i5 8600K for 1440p, high settings & decent FPS? 980 ti / 1070 / 1080?
  2. Currently sporting a pretty shit build: AMD FX-8350 (8 @ 4.0GHz) R9 290x 16GB Ram - I have two 1440p monitors, at low/medium settings in most FPS games I'm pulling 40-60fps, but with lows of 30...1080p (which looks awful) runs ~30% better I'm looking at upgrading to an Core i5 8600K on covfefe Lakes release, with intentions to keep my 290x in it for a while, but now I'm thinking that it might be the problem as Afterburner suggests PUBG is running at 100% GPU, 60% & CPU Thoughts? GPU Suggestion? Pre-Owned is fine.
  3. Unfortunatley unavailable, but you made me find these thanks https://www.amazon.co.uk/noctua-NF-P14s-redux-1200-PWM-Noctua/dp/B00KHRGUNC/ref=pd_cp_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=F2TQ8VZYEWW0MSPAN6JG
  4. I think this is the way I'm swaying currently, cba to wait but I think its the only way to be sure
  5. It might be capable of the overclock, but benchmark suggests it struggles, and this is only compared with a cheap 212 cooler. 90deg is too high for me!
  6. Looking up more on the 1600 (non x) variant now. It's only £20 cheaper & I was planning on getting a big air cooler anyway, but i suppose i could forgo both to save ~£100. Opinions on the stock cooler?
  7. Hi Guys, So in another thread I'm discussing the i5 1600x build I'm planning - which seems to be a good sweet spot for gaming price / performance currently. Do you think it's silly to build with that CPU now, knowing that Coffee Lake come out in the next month? My thoughts: Coffee lake won't be socket 1151, so the boards will likely be full price (most z270 boards are on a ~20% discount currently) A new chipset could mean a wait for coolers to be updated, pricing will likely follow as above Coffee lake will likely overclock very well if history shows us anything, whereas the 1600x is known to be stubborn to overclock past 4.0GHz Games and applications 'tend' to be better optimised for intel RX Vega looks promising, I imagine it'll work better with Ryzen? Discuss internet. 1600: 3 1600x : Coffee Lake: 2 Wait and see: 3
  8. Done a lot of reading for my Ryzen 5 build - Going for Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz for two reasons: Ryzen seems to really benefit from high clocked Ram, 3000/3200 seems to be the sweetspot for price/prof I need low profile to clear my cooler (Noctua NH-D15) Any respectable brand with a high clock should be fine, 2 sticks are better than 1! Edit: Read this too:
  9. Update #1 Now looking at semi-passive PSUs but they're very expensive / have worrying reviews Think I'm going to go with the NH-15 & forgo the front fan Will get an extra noctua 140 to go in the front, keep the two existing case fans in - change them if they're loud
  10. Hi Guys, I'm looking to build a new rig, mostly for gaming in 1440p. No real budget but I'm trying to be sensible! I want it to be mid sized, quiet and not run too hot. Decided on components: Fractal Design C case (clear side) Ryzen 5 1600x Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x8GB) DDR4 3000MHz ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F EVGA SuperNOVA 650 gold fully modular Currently have a r9 290x, that'll be in there until I can afford an upgrade (Waiting to get UK prices on RX Vega) Components in question: Noctua NH15 SE-AM4 (with only one fan?)/ or / Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 ? Additional noctua front case fan(s)? 120/140 ? What do you think? Best fan layout? Ta
  11. Suggestions for motherboard and heatsink for the i5-4690K please, Need optical audio output on board and suitable for light overclocking in the future
  12. So from my last 3 hours of research I think I might have to keep my quadro 600, there aren't any workstation grade graphics card (that I can afford) that stack up to it in Soldiworks, and I don't play the most recent (or most intensive) games anyways - Having a look at the i5-4690K CPU & a suitable mboard atm
  13. Hi guys, long time reader - first time poster So I'm a second year Product design student in the UK and I use my PC for solidworks and photoshop, but also for gaming. I want some better performance on both bases - so where to start spending my money? Current specs: i5 760 (Socket 1156LGA) Quad core @ 2.8GHz (Not currently overclocking) 2 x 4GB of DDR3 PC3-12800 RAM Quadro 600 1GB graphics card Asus P7H55-M/USB3 Motherboard Lancool PC-K7B Black Case (Stock cooling) Thermaltake PurePower RX 500W Things to note: -If you suggest changing my graphics card it needs to have DisplayPort -Will your overclocking idea require a change of case? -Changing to more recent 1155 socket CPU's means a change in motherboard to be added to the price - will my RAM work with this motherboard? -UK prices are best found on Scan, Amazon UK or Overclockers I'd like to avoid putting a budget, but I wouldn't want to spend more than £200-400, to keep this rig going for a year or so until I can afford to start from scratch. Thanks in advance, Fraser
