Consoles are great for some games. I have an Xbox One, and had the last gen consoles, and prefer playing some games on them to playing them on a PC (games like COD, GTA). Tbh, the next-gen consoles aren't anything fancy- GTA V is only 1080p 30fps with barely/ little to none antialiasing and looks awful, and COD AW is the only console game i've played that has fun at 1080p 60fps but thats only because it uses an old game engine and does wierd resolution stretching. The Xbox One is really convinient for playing with friends who are not aasked/ don't know how to PC game (ik some people can't be asked to install steam). Personally, I would go and invest in a PC upgrade if you play games such as Battlefield 4, Far Cry 4, AC Black Flag, or big AAA titles on PC; but if you want to really play with friends, despite the consoles being dwarfed by PC performance, go for it.
