    Hey everyone!

    I have a nice little update for you. I have been hard at work painting and clear coating these last few days, but have not had so much time to get so many photos. I am doing all of this at my workplace before/after work and during lunch breaks and whenever I get a free minute to spare.

    In this update I show that I painted the inside of the case from black to white... And oh my does it look mighty fine!

    I am in the process of painting the fans and top/bottom panels, and clear coating the painted PSU and redone front panel. I will have photos of those after the weekend for your viewing pleasure.

    I hope you have liked this update

    Kind regards,

    Kiukaz reacted to lubblig in Make glossy plastic look nice
    So I just found this great video on Youtube by Snazzy Labs (so I didn't come up with this myself, just pointing that out...).
    It basically is a method for making glossy plastic look like brushed aluminum. I should mention that I haven't tried it out myself yet so I cannot guarantee any results.

    Maybe most of you know this already? But I just wanted to tell you if there is anyone out there who doesn't and hate that glossy plastic on their devices just as much as I do.

    All you need is this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAZ75W/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000GAZ75W&linkCode=as2&tag=that0d-20&linkId=LOENWTZ7JTS67GTC
    And then something to clean it off with, in the video the guy uses a glass cleaner to make it clean from any plastic residue. You may need some electrical tape to cover up parts you may want to keep glossy (such as logos and such). But I would just recommend you watch the video to understand the entire process, he talks about pretty much everything I have.

    Personally I think it looks really cool, at least if the device is black. I'm not so sure about a different colored device but that is something you'd just have to test I guess. But the black devices he shows in his video looks really nice!

    EDIT:

    So I've tested this myself now. I didn't use exactly what Snazzy Labs used since I didn't have it and I saw some speculations about if it would work with what I did use in the posts on the next page. So I used an old hub/charger for my old Logitech G930 headset and the following to make it look nice (I'm sorry for not referring the making nice looking thing by any name but I simply don't know what it is called...):

    The thing I used to make it nice with (I'll call it X from now on. ) was a bit old and had already been used so I was unsure if that was going to affect my result. But since I don't care about the receiver I did it anyways.

    On all the usb ports (both cables and the usb in the middle), I put tape over to make sure I didn't get plastic residue in them. The logo I just went straight over. The tape for the usb hole in the middle I made sure was only inside of the hole and didn't go over any edges so that it didn't interfere with X when I made everything look nice.

    This is how it looked directly after I stopped using X, without any cleaning with water or chemicals;

    As you can see there is quite a lot of residue from something (might be plastic but might also be from X) inside the usb hole in the middle. So the piece of tape really is necessary in my opinion. Also remember to do this somewhere you can easily clean stuff up. I was at my bathroom sink doing it to make sure everything could be taken care of easily.

    This is how it looked when I had cleaned it off (Btw, I only cleaned it off using water. I don't think glass cleaner is needed). Another thing to note is that I really suck at taking pictures so I know that there is light on there but that was the only way for me to show anything. It was either that or complete darkness. Also, it does look mostly scratched up this close but when I look at it, it looks really good. I can't get near enough to see that it looks scratched. Also, the scratches the goes in the opposite direction from what X did, was there before I used X, but I can't see them either IRL. I just wanted to say this, so don't get afraid of doing this because of my pictures. It truly does look really good IRL.

    So what are my thoughts on this?

    It does actually look good, everyone who dislikes their stained glossy plastic should at least try it out on something they don't care about to see how cool this is!

    I tried to put grease stains on it and when you REALLY try, of course it will work, but if you just pick it up with clean hands, you will NOT put fingerprints all over it! Which really is great.

    I didn't use X for too long so I could maybe have gotten a better result or maybe a device that only looks scratched up (I stopped when I started to see the effect I wanted, maybe it could have been better but it could also have become a mess if I continued). That is why I recommend you to try this out on stuff you can mess up before you do it on your precious devices you do not want to ruin since there is no Undo.

    So I guess now you guys have a test of this. But again, I do think you should try it on something you don't care about before something you do and if you are not satisfied or just need to practice more, then you'll know. You don't want to ruin a device like this.

    6th Day - Thursday 01-12-11 - Update 1

    1st of the month, white rabbits!

    cough*cough*ahem... aniway!

    As I mentioned yesterday, the wireless keyboard and mouse arrived. I could´ve gone for something fancier but to be honest I really like the standard logitech oem combo, it´s cheap, great quality, sturdy and lasts just about forever. So here we go, keyboard sanded down, masked and ready for painting:

    First layer done:

    And the same process as with the rest, darkening, particles, and... rust! I´d never though I´d say this, but, I really really really like the whole rusty look it´s turning out to have (originally I planned for only a bit).

    And now I´d like to thank everyone on every forum this is posted who helped me out with suggestions for the front of the case.

    I ended up mixing two suggestions, one was rusted out front and the other one was olive green light coat with a light coat of the yellow I used on the rest of the case on top, so here you have the result:

    More later today, thanks for reading!

    6th Day - Thursday 01-12-11 - Update 2

    This for me is quite simply, the cherry on top:

    Took me about 2 and half to 3 hours to get it just right, to get that look like it´s been stamped on the case rather than painted (in my oppinion aniway), hope you guys like it!

    Tomorrow starts the final day (ends mid-day saturday), and as of now, all the modifying and painting is finished so tomorrow I will be assembling it all togueter (ps: didn´t take pictures but the psu, dvd rw and hd have been painted black, it´s almost my signature thing to paint all possible components so... nothing fancy, just mainly so no ugly grey bits to see through the openings) and taking loads of pictures of the final look which will conclude succesfully the "Mod in a Week" challenge.

    Thanks for reading : )

    /////////

    7th Day - Friday 02-12-11

    Assembly took longer than I thought it would but almost there, the following pictures are the process, because I had to remove the HDD cage from bellow to install the monitor´s hardware and hide cables I had to dismantle the memory card reader to take out the pcb and cut the frontal plastic part that goes with it. Once done and used silicone glue to put them togueter and again to attach it to the case (as you will see in one of the pictures), this allowed me to install the hdd where that would normally go (i.e. enough space to do so now). The cathodes are barely visible but are at the top and on the right side. Also due to popular demand, I replaced the cpu cooler with another exactly the same one, modified the 775 adaptor so I could shift it half a centimetre to right so I´d be able to rotate the cooler to a possition where the heatpipes are pointing up and down as opposed to the side so it doesn´t prevent me from installing both modules of ram:

    Now I just have to mount the screen, make sure it works and I can take some sweet final pictures, all done by tomorrow at around 6-7pm gmt+1 in order to meet the one week challenge.

    Thanks for reading!

    //////////

    Update

    Project is now completed however I have ran in to a problem with the mounted screen, it doesn´t seem to be getting power, I´ve checked the usual culprits to no avail and I dont currently own a voltimetre which is unconveniente. Going to dismantle the screen´s hw and test it on a wooden bench, maybe it´s shorting out. Because I want the final picks to show an image I will wait to upload them till I get this fixed between today and monday.

    ------------------------------------------

    Update:

    Fixed the screen, one of the cables must´ve cought somewhere and was damaged, severing the link between the screen´s psu and the lcd panel. So I cut that section off and soldered new cable to both ends, works fine now. Took me hours of looking and trying stuff till I saw the small brake in the cable and of course later I had to put it all togueter in the case again.

    Aniway, I´m knakered and now I have to go some event to be social which I don´t really feel like but promised I would so... Aniway, I will set it all up for a shoot tomorrow to get a nice gallery of final pictures.

    //////////

    Final Pictures - Set 1

    Hi everyone!

    Right, as promised, here is a first set of the final pictures. I say first set because I´m not happy with them, light conditions, the need to use flash and reflections on the case by nearby windows, the table (that was a dumb idea) and so on, make the project look different, they make it look shiny (which is not), they distort the colors, you can barely see the green glow, etc

    The point is, because I´m out of time right now I give you these just as a preview of some nicer final pictures which I will take at the modding event starting tuesday. Regardless, I hope you enjoy them : )

    That´s it for now, I´m going to get it ready (install the OS, drivers, and so on, and pack it so it´s ready for tuesday. Once that´s out of the way I will start the final stage on Project: AIO AL and Project: Diabolo in the hopes of having them ready for tuesday as well.

    This concludes the "Mod in a Week" challenge (for the second time, anyone remember my first one or has it been forgotten already? ) and I hope you enjoyed reading and watching as much as I did doing it.

    Thanks for reading!

    //

    just thought I´d add that Fallout Cause SP won 1st price at the Future Arena Modding competition (casemod section)

    //

    As promised, set 2 of the final pictures, the ones I consider the true final pictures. As you´ll notice there´s a fan on the cpu cooler, this is because I have just gotten back from the modding event and because it was on 24h for 6 days, I didnt feel comftable leaving it with no cooling whatsoever being on for such a long time.

    Thank you everyone for reading and I can now trully say this project is completed, enjoy:

    Glad you like it man:)

    Time to do some prototyping. I was very excited to see how well the acrylic windows could be made. All the pieces of the window is angled, so this would be a challenge to machine. Luckily I got in touch with Justin O'Grady from Parvum Systems who offered to help me out.    This is the first prototype piece that I got from them to test out the quality. I knew that the pieces had to be individually sanded and polished after machining, which is also why the window is not just one big piece.     This is a render of the top window and is the file that was sent to Parvum Systems.     The piece I got in the mail.      You can see the milling traces on the top.     And here it can be seen in more detail. The piece can be milled a lot more precise but this was a test to see how this roughness would be to sand down.     To sand it, I used wet-sanding paper with a roughness of 800 grit. I somehow lost my 1200 and 2000 grit pieces, so it still needs some work.     Sanding the piece. Remember to use lots of water, and exchange it frequently when wet sanding, or the particles you just sanded off will scratch the piece.     after sanding with 800 grit.     still a rough result, but I also misplaced my polishing compound, so this is how the finish is at the moment.
