Well they say assumption is the mother of all fuck ups. I was going to ask your grip earlier and then realized that since you used a Naga, you must have a palm grip...

As it is, I'm guessing you're a fingertip gripper that only incidentally makes palm-contact due to your mouse being too large? Going off that assumption, see if you like the look of the CM Storm Spawn, Razer Abyssus or Razer Krait 2013. They'd be ideal size-wise, but unfortunately small mice tend to be rather feature-sparse, with the Spawn being the only one that even has side buttons. If you're okay with something larger, then the Zowie EC2 Evo, Roccat Savu, Roccat Kone Pure Optical and Corsair M40 are all a step smaller than mice like the DA, Rival, G400 etc.

If you're looking for the best mouse, objectively, for FPS gaming? Optical is indeed better than laser mice and for precisely the reason you stated. You'd want to get a Corsair M40 over a Corsair M65, for example.

DPI-wise, I use 800. That's as low as I can go without it becoming impractical due to my grip (if you read the other thread, you'll get why I think lower sens is better ).

Back to the mouse itself, a Deathadder seems like the logical conclusion. It has grips on the sides, a perfect sensor and it's what the Naga's shape was deviated from, so it should be (comparatively) an easy transition.

As far as I'm aware, there are no many-buttoned optical mice with a "perfect sensor". Even the G602, which is optical, doesn't have a perfect sensor. This is the problem with companies putting the same crummy high-DPI sensors in every mouse, bar one for people who know what they're doing. Even Steel Series are doing it now, bringing out a mouse with a supposedly decent sensor (Rival), but following the same 5-button design of the DA, G400s, AM, KPO etc.

I think the best you can do for now is getting a mouse with a couple of side buttons and a couple of DPI buttons that can be redefined, plus maybe a scroll wheel with tilt buttons (does anyone other than Logitech do this? It's barely ever mentioned.)

The Naos 5000 has a different sensor to the 3200 and thus the Deathadder as well, though the Deathadder has a much newer version of the sensor in the 3200.

No they can't. Aside from the software acceleration, there is acceleration inherent to sensors which can't be changed. This is why all the "acceptable" mice in that chart are optical mice.

That said, it's a silly chart that's obnoxiously presented and rather out of date.

Below 6/11 it interpolates and above 6/11 it extrapolates (I may have gotten that the wrong way round). The way it's calculated means that above 6/11 your pointer will skip pixels. You'd be better off with pointer speed at default and raising your DPI, though 1300 should really be enough.

I think people are perfectly within their rights to dislike something that isn't what they subscribed for...That's what the like/dislike dynamic is for.

Fact is, the majority of people who subscribed to NCIX Tech Tips did so because of Linus. They're subscribed to see videos of Linus. The majority of people probably have no idea that he's left. The people who follow Linus closely enough to know that he's quit NCIX and started his own company will still be the minority of NCIX subscribers.

Now, once people realize he's actually gone (or if he hasn't gone, then once he has), there probably will be a horde of people that unsubscribe. There will be some that are content with a new presenter and there will be people who subscribe because it's not Linus doing it anymore, but they will lose a huge chunk of their viewers and they will need to rebuild their channel...That's just a natural consequence of a personality-driven channel that changes its personality.

Imagine the next season of Breaking Bad suddenly became a documentary about the relationships of cellmates in jail and it happened to be amazing...People who tuned in expecting to see a continuation of the story would still be pissed off and they'd still complain, despite the fact that it was good, because they'd have formed expectations about Breaking Bad and what it delivered. That's all that's happening here - people's expectations aren't being met and so, quite reasonably, they're disgruntled. That doesn't make them children, it just makes them human.

For those with mouse pads, optical is preferable. Granted, those who like to use their mice on sandpaper might be better off with a laser mouse.

You're correct, it's not optimal for FPS games (or rather, the sensor isn't).

I know it's a boring option, but if you've been satisfied with your experience of the Deathadder, the best option could be another (newer) Deathadder.

    6/11 = 6 out of 11. There's 11 notches.

Okay, so enhanced pointer precision introduces acceleration into your mouse movement, meaning the faster you move your mouse over the same distance, the further your pointer will travel (acceleration is generally regarded as undesirable. The majority of discussion about mouse sensors is about how to avoid acceleration). Your DPI is effectively a lot lower than 4000 while moving the mouse at anything but the fastest speeds as long as you have enhanced pointer precision enabled. Try switching it off for a moment to see what 4000 DPI "should" be like.

Still, I'm not saying you should change your mouse setup. It's just not optimal is all.

It's certainly a misconception worthy of clearing up, but perhaps not in quite those letters.

As I said...As I made a point of saying, it applies to everything, not just a pixel. An enemy soldier's head is effectively 5 times bigger at 800 DPI than 4000 DPI.

You'll train yourself to be more accurate regardless, but short of achieving 100% accuracy (physically impossible for a human to do, to my knowledge), you will always do better at a lower DPI. I'm not saying thousands of DPI isn't workable or usable once you've forced yourself to get used to it, I'm saying you'd do better with a lower DPI, once you'd gotten used to it and your muscle-memory adjusted.

Also, I doubt I need to ask considering the rest of this thread, but is your windows pointer speed at 6/11 and enhanced pointer precision disabled?

Not only is more DPI not better, but it's probably worse. You want your sensitivity (which is all DPI is) as low as possible without it becoming impractical (impractical as in not being able to turn around quick enough to respond, for example). Once the sensitivity/DPI is practical, all you do by raising it is make it harder to hit what you want.

If you're playing on a single monitor at 1920x1200 or below, anything above 1200 DPI is probably doing you a disservice.

You have 2-3 sources of sound...

1: The "click" in tactile switches (I've never tried brown, but I imagine there still is a sound, just much quieter?)
2: The sound of bottoming out
3: The sound of a key as it "tops out" after been released. The volume of this depends on the strength of the spring and how far you push the key down.

As such, the quietest cherry switches will be reds.

The A9800 is just a DPI-boosted A9500 as far as I'm aware. It certainly retains the acceleration flaws (or "speed errors" from your video).

Yes, you need a source, because your claims are out of step with what is generally regarded to be true. The only time laser has any performance advantage over optical is if you aren't using a mouse pad (which you should be). Otherwise? Optical is either equal or superior. I think many would argue from their own experiences that the flaws in laser sensors are very much perceivable, but even for those who can't perceive them, it doesn't mean it isn't affecting them. In the same way we aren't consciously aware of our brain building the muscle memory that improves our aim, it's possible we aren't consciously aware of that which impedes our aim. I think it's preferable to know that any time you suffer as a result of a miss or miss-click that it was down to your error and not your mouse's.

While this does tend to relate to the more extreme ends of mouse movements, acceleration/speed errors actually kick in at rather pedestrian speeds with the A9800 and A9500 sensors, because although they have very high malfunction speeds, their perfect control speeds are considerably lower, which means laser sensor flaws come into play far more often.

That video does apply somewhat, but only serves to dismantle the selling point of current laser sensors (uselessly high DPI).

That's actually a better example than I think I could've come up with, but yeah, that kind of thing. Various kinds of echoes/resonance, along with better directionality (such as altering voices appropriately for people who are in other rooms, behind doors or inside different environments etc.) are the most obvious sorts of implementations, but even something like altering the way things sound when you're underwater I can imagine being done on the GPU.

Things like swapping amps and audiophile stuff is sound card territory. I'm talking more about things like the surround stuff they demoed, EAX or Dolby HD. Think along the lines of the audio equivalent for PhysX. Sound quality will be sound card/amp/headphone/speaker-based as ever, while audio effects and simulations (the audio equivalent of shaders and such I suppose) will be what GPUs take care of.

Visuals and audio are two sides of the same sensory coin. ASUS is the only one pushing sound anymore and they're all about the hardware. Creative tried their EAX thing back in the day and that's fallen by the wayside. It's going to fall upon AMD and NVidia to push audial simulation and immersion...Gaming audio is going to fall within the realm of GPUs.
