I have an r9 280 in my main PC now, I was planning to upgrade to Polaris/Pascal when they come out and just sell my 280. Do you think undervolting that would drop the noise and temps significantly but seeing as the performance would drop do you think it would be similar to something like a 470 anyway? Should I just give the htpc the hand me down 280?
-
Possibly, I like the idea of spending £25 on a gpu rather than £125 though :-P
-
Do you think it's feasible to be able to lower a cards temperatures by like 10C? For the price the 470 seems perfect, about the same performance as a 750ti, just worried about heat and noise
-
I've never actually underclocked a card, how much can they be undervolted by? Will undervolting without changing the clocks affect the stability? Or just the boost clock?
-
I'm trying to do it as cheap as possible so I think a 950 is out of the question It's an LGA 775 board than I'm gonna be putting a Xeon e5440, I imagine 750ti or greater would probably be bottlenecked by the CPU quite a bit

So I'm building a htpc out of used and old parts, but want a graphics card that's capable of a little bit of gaming too. I've seen a gtx 470 for sale for £25 but I know Fermi cards get pretty damn hot and I want the PC to be fairly quiet. First does anyone think it's a good idea to get a 470 in 2016? I'd like nvidia for the Linux support Second has anyone who owned a Fermi card underclocked it? What kind of temperatures and noise levels did you get?

I'd like the keyboard. I don't have a sob story, I just use a HP keyboard I bought for £5 a few years ago.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, whilst having a look at all the recommendations i stumbled across the Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 and it looks just about perfect!
-
Do any other case manufacturers do anything like that? Ideally i'd want a completely open vented front to the case with those moduvents on top, but all the define series seem to have the solid fronts with vents on the edges
-
But thanks none the less so far for all the suggestions, i'll check out lots of reviews and things and try and find something i like, i can be a bit picky!
-
Ive heard that the h440 isn't great for airflow as the front intakes are somewhat restricted. The source 220 doesn't look like a bad shout, but it looks like it might suffer from having too many open vents like the 300R does. Is there anything like with the fractal design covers for the top fans that have quite open fronts of the cases? Or is that more just a silent case kind of thing?
-
So im in the market for a new pc case, one with good airflow, 2 front intake fans is a must and preferably space for a side fan. The Corsair Carbide 300r looks really good, it pretty much perfectly fits the bill only problem is i have heard it can be quite a loud case due to all the open vents on it, especially the ones on the top. Does anybody know of any alternative cases they could recommend?
