windude99 reacted to Speedbird in You know you need to call tech support when
When your ISP is blocking ports.
When the only way to reset a BIOS password is by using a file unqiue to each device.
When you have a dead laptop still under warranty
When your phone/tablet/any portable device dies.
When you receive something DOA
When a forum tells you to call tech support.

Recently, my mom asked me for help getting something from a shelf in her closet (i'm ~6ft tall, she's 5'5") and when I came in, she was watching house of cards on her iMac with her secondary monitor turned to face the wall. I asked her why she didn't just turn off the thing and she said "I didn't want to loose the work that was on it" I then had to explain how monitors worked to her.

windude99 reacted to RossMadness in Macbook Pro Updates halfway then shuts off
Have you run Apple Hardware Test to make sure there isn't a physical error?
Also, what happened when you booted into Safe Mode?
I would next recommend resetting the PRAM. To do this, right after you power on the computer, hold down CMD+OPtion+P+R until the computer restarts. Once it restarts, release the keys.

windude99 reacted to mechtech in Why is Canned Air ok, but Vacuum Cleaner not?
I also switched from using cans to an electric datavac duster. I always hated the cans, and worried one would blow in my face due to pushing it so cold.
I never vacuum on components but regularly clean out case grills and simply use it on the side to pickup the dust, but never on the parts themselves.

windude99 got a reaction from mechtech in Why is Canned Air ok, but Vacuum Cleaner not?
I started using canned air because I heard about the static risk of vacuums. I cleaned a system that had been vacuumed out as maintenance previously and the compressed air was able to get rid of more dust out of the PSU, especially. I think it does a more thorough job. I use a Metrovac Datavac electronic duster and I prefer it over canned air any day. It is well built, 5 year motor warranty, and it is like having unlimited compressed air for $50. You also don't have to worry about the liquid in compressed air cans. So, in conclusion, either use a compressor or a Datavac electronic duster as it is more thorough (and may be less of a risk in terms of static, but I am not sure)
