  1. Budget (including currency): $750 USD Country: USA Hi all, My friend wants to upgrade his build that I built for him about 8 years ago. I have been very out of touch with the hardware scene for a long while, but I still would like to help him out. He will be gaming at 1080p 60Hz. He specifically mentioned Warhammer 40,000: Darktide as a game he would like to play. Here is his current machine: PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pwPKDq CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($0.00) Motherboard: Gigabyte G1.Sniper B7 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 CL15 Memory ($0.00) Storage: Crucial BX200 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive ($0.00) Video Card: MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC GeForce GTX 970 4 GB Video Card Case: NZXT Source 210 Elite ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer 620 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply Total: $0.00 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2023-01-02 16:38 EST-0500 I'm thinking that the best (and easiest) upgrade path would be to get a used i7-7700K from eBay, a new CPU cooler, another m.2 SSD, and an RTX 3070 from eBay: PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zxGxqm CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($210.00) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S redux 70.75 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.98 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Gigabyte G1.Sniper B7 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($0.00) Memory: G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 CL15 Memory ($0.00) Storage: Crucial BX200 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($0.00) Storage: Kingston NV2 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive ($59.84 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive ($0.00) Video Card: MSI VENTUS 2X OC GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB Video Card ($425.00) Case: NZXT Source 210 Elite ATX Mid Tower Case ($0.00) Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer 620 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($0.00) Total: $741.82 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2023-01-02 16:38 EST-0500 This brings the total to about $750 for the upgrade. That would be the maximum budget. Is this a good approach? Could I get better performance for the same price by doing a different upgrade path? If I want to drop in the 7770K, all I have to do is just update the BIOS first, right? Thanks everyone
  2. Hi all, I work in a university research laboratory and I am designing a cooling system. Water will be cooled by a laboratory water chiller, and the chilled water will be used to cool down the hot side of Peltier units. The water chiller has a 1/2" Female "Pipe Thread" Connection. The Peltier units have a 1/8" Female Connection (specifically: Rp 1/8-28 and 10-mm deep). The recommended tubing is either 6mm or 8mm ID tubing. I think that 1/4" tubing would work if we got the right fittings. I do not want to use standard barb fittings with hose clamps. I know that PC watercooling has very secure compression fittings, but I haven't been able to find anything in the diameter that we need. Can someone help me find some fittings that would fit with the chiller and peltiers that are not standard barb and hose clamp? I appreciate the help, thanks everyone.
  3. I don't think I can find that model in the USA unfortunately unless I am missing something.
  4. Hi everyone, Here are the two laptops in question: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097T93ZCN/ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L54PW2P/ I am having trouble deciding which laptop to go with. I plan on doing a lot of programming and Matlab (maybe even a simulation or two) as well as daily productivity tasks. However, I value battery life and general usage experience a lot too. I hear that the MSI gets hot and loud, and it also doesn't have an HDMI port. The Lenovo is heavier and $100 more expensive (MSI has a rebate). Will the Ryzen 5 4600U offer more performance than the i5-1135G7 for Matlab and programming? Is there a clear winner here? Or is it really as close as I'm making it? Are there other options that are similarly spec'd that I should take a look at? Thanks!
  5. When you buy a machine for a business you have to have all sorts of approvals and get it locked down by the IT dept. They dont allow custom machines. No getting around that.
  6. As much as I want to build this computer, it is not possible due to business restrictions.
  7. No set budget specifically. The cheapest option that will run the program well. Thanks for the help!
  8. Hello everyone, I need to use EmbroideryStudio e4. These are the system requirements: https://www.wilcomamerica.com/products/embroiderystudio-e4-designing#system-requirements CPU – Latest Generation Intel® Core i7 or i9 (although it doesn't necessarily need to be an intel CPU) Memory – 32 GB 256GB SSD (at least) + 2TB of HDD storage Graphics Card – Support for DirectX 9 graphics with: WDDM Driver, 2GB of graphics memory (non-integrated), Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware bits per pixel, and Dual Monitor Capable If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! Thanks!
  9. I ended up just getting the Sound Blaster Play 3. You all are right, much simpler in the end. Thanks everyone!
  10. Hi everyone, I'm looking to spend about $30 max on a soundcard. My front audio jacks have a really odd problem with the microphone input, and my rear jacks have now completely failed. My options are buy a USB soundcard or a internal PCIe soundcard. Ive been looking on ebay and these look promising: https://www.ebay.com/itm/373594685926 Anything I should look out for? Thanks
  11. Greetings, LTT and Short circuit have made a lot of laptop videos. I've watched some, but not all. I have no idea what to choose. I am looking for a new laptop that is LESS than $1400 (absolute max). Requirements: 14" screen size Windows 10 OS Very thin and very light 512GB SSD (or have a smaller capacity one that I can upgrade myself within budget) What I will use the laptop for: I will mainly be using this laptop for programming, scientific computing, data analysis, and light simulations. I have a desktop at home, this laptop would be for "on the go". I was looking at the LG gram 14. It seems like it has everything I would want. I found this one on Amazon for $800. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086Z1XHYN/ What do you guys think? Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!
  12. Good suggestion. Unfortunately doing that yields the same RAM usage.
  13. Like I said there are no obvious offenders. No background processes are using more than 50MB of ram and most are between 1-10MB
  14. Hi everyone! I am running Windows 10 Pro and I discovered this issue last evening while doing some Java programming. I noticed that I was using nearly all my memory, so I shut down my computer in the hopes that it would fix something. Unfortunately, even after shutting down, my computer still uses 14/16GB of RAM at idle. I scanned with Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything. There are no processes that are using more than 50MB of memory and most of them are between 1-10MB when I scroll through task manager. There doesn't seem to be an obvious offender when looking at task manager. Please let me know if you guys can think of anything to try. Thanks! EDIT: THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN SAFE MODE
