I don't care what reasons you have for trying this, but no. There are legal ways to get information from private property and this is only trying to go around warrantless searches by saying that a "private entity" is doing it. The Constitution, at least in the United States, should apply to everyone, public and private.

Ah yes, legal proceedings against a company and individuals for sexual assault that even resulted in someone taking their own life is such a "woke" thing to be upset about right? We should just ignore things "in the past" and "move on" and not worry about bringing justice because "woke people" will win right?

ARikozuM reacted to Furiku in Home Depot is now selling power tools that require activation at checkout for them to work
Summary
To combat themselves from capitalists worst nightmare: decreased profits due to stolen merchandise, Home Depot is now adding microchips to popular power tools together with manufacturers which render the devices completely useless unless activated at checkout via bluetooth when purchased.
The main reason apparently for this move has been organized theft rings which target high value power tools due to their resale value being high.
Quotes
My thoughts
I actually support this idea completely as long as the activation is permanent, which it seems to be as it's one-time thing done at checkout with bluetooth..
But as techie I also understand: Countdown to this being hacked in 3... 2...
In worst case it's simply a matter of using a Bluetooth sniffer, buying one power tool and recording deactivation and pray they implemented it poorly.
Either way, this'll give hackers something.. interesting to get into all of sudden.

Power plants are generally 70-90% efficient and can be in use all day without a reduction in efficiency. Most ICEs today only get up to 40% and that's after warming up sufficiently and hoping that the computer can properly adjust valves and sprays for best efficiency.

ARikozuM reacted to Spotty in In the US, life cycle emissions for EVs are 60-68% lower than gasoline.
The light blue "fuel/electricity production" is the CO2 cost of producing the fuel or electricity. For fuel this will be the refining process. For electricity this will be the CO2 emissions from [mostly coal burning] power stations.
The dark blue section "fuel consumption" is the CO2 production of burning the fuel in the car as you drive.
When the electricity stored in the battery in the car is used while driving there's no CO2 emissions which is why the graph doesn't show CO2 emissions for it. The CO2 that is generated when producing the electricity at the power station has already been accounted for in the "fuel/electricity production" (light blue) section.

Well I disagree with that. With the range of the current EV options on the market you won't have to recharge that often and it's pretty darn easy to charge your EV while shopping (food or w/e). My local shopping center has free EV charging so even harder to argue with that, just go window shopping for 40-60 minutes 🤷♂️

Summary
Electric cars produce significant less green house emissions compared to gasoline cars when factoring in everything from building the car to its life time run time.

My thoughts
Finally a simple to understand article and graph that shows new electric cars are better than new gasoline cars that I can point to to people who think EVs are over-hyped. Even if EVs got all their electricity from coal power plants, it would be more efficient than gasoline cars. There is a reason everyone doesn't power their homes with gas generators. As we add more green power to the power grid, and as more people add solar to their homes, charging their cars at home, the fewer emissions there will be. Buying a new gas car in 2021, outside of very niche applications where you regularly drive 200+ miles a day, is a mistake.

ARikozuM reacted to Electronics Wizardy in How do you guys test a new HDD?
As someone with 200+ hdds, I don't do testing on initial use. DOA rate is pretty low, and if something funny is happening, is just rma or swap out the hdd. When I need to test a hdd I normally use badblocks, but that can take days on a new hdd its not worth it.

This is blowing up on YouTube ATM, I'll begin with a tweet that should show just how sophisticated this scam is...
Essentially the scammers have worked out a method of sending people emails that are originating from a genuine Google domain making them indistinguishable from authentic Google emails.
Details are a bit thin ATM but it seems as though the scammers are bouncing the emails through Google Chat and when they arrive in your inbox they look like they've come from Google (because they basically have). Then once you click the link provided it actually opens a session in Google Chat making it seem even more believable that you're really talking to Google.
Some Ordinary Gamers also received the email and was in the process of chatting to the scammers when he noticed the email of the person he was chatting to had an @account-support.com domain on their email.
If you receive an email from Google saying
its a scam. Ignore it.

EDIT ;
looks like he missed the scammer's domain when chatting with him ;

I’ll agree that driving schools and the process of getting a driving license in general can be improved in many ways, but the licenses are definitely not useless. What would you propose instead, just letting anyone who feels like it drive? And you thought people suck at driving now… As someone who lives in the US in my opinion getting a license should be more difficult than it currently is.
